Studded Leather Armor
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:30:54 AM »
I was wondering if studded leather armor is AT 11 or less? Any thoughts on this.

You have all the different armor types you can find at page 12 in Arms Law.

And to answer your question. AT 11 is normally Half-Hide Plate normally worn only by animals. It's an animal hide. AT 3, 4, 11 and 12 are animal hides and normally not worn by humanoids. Although magical armors can change this.

If you think the studded armor is similar to the rigid leather armor types it should be AT 9 for the chestpiece or AT 10 if you have arm and leg covers too.

Ok. I was not sure if I could make a "man made" armor have the same AT as hides of some animals. I thought that the table was just a guid and that some armor's could fall into any of the categories. I am just trying to make a more "campaign specific" list.

In the core RM rules, that table represents the specific armors and types of armor that are available.

In the core rules, one AT == one specific suit of armor.

Now, having said that, Armor Types 7 and 8 are Reinforced Leather Armor, and Studded Leather armor COULD be considered to be part of those two (these two ATs are pretty much the most versatile because they are more vague in their descriptions, allowing for variations).

I have always translated AD&D's leather armor as AT7/8 and the studded leather armor as AT9/10. But from the pure armor description Rasyr's suggestion is probably more correct.

Yeah, I would have to agree with Rasyr's view on this. It fits most of the descrioption.

Then price studded leather as a +5 or +10 superior leather armor to represent the advantage of the metal studding.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

Studded leather armor did not exist, historically. Actually setting metal studs in leather armor is very poor armor. The metal studs would only help guide a blade into the sections of the leather without studs, and any force hitting the studs themselves would drive them into the wearer's body, hurting more. The concept of studded leather is a misinterpretation of historical illustrations of brigadine armor, with the metal studs that hold the metal plates in place showing through the cloth or leather covering. That's why I always took it that studded leather wasn't included in the Rolemaster books in the first place.

Akai,
You are probably right on that point and it has gotten lost through the ages.

Also,
Never forget the armor mod section of the RM2 Arms Companion if you have it or can find a copy.

Aramis,
Yes it is the Arms Companion I am talking about. But I also have to give you a bit of a warning that if you play a mid to low poeer game it may not give you the best bang for your $. I have used the if to provide some adjustments to armor but weapons for my RMSS game. But I greatly cut down on the bonuses or penalties applied to the DB or OB. But I still find it useful to look at for various problems especially since I bought it in a RM lot and not for $50 by its self.
Sorry I just got up and saw the buy it now price for $50.

yeah, I think that is a little much for what they are asking. At least I have an idea what it looks like now so I'll keep my eyes open for it.

If it goes for $50 I might have to sell one of my two copies.
