Pillar of the Gods image
« on: September 16, 2009, 04:24:10 AM »
Reading though the Shadow World addendum in the Emer book (original Emer book 1 from ebay), I was intrigued with the concept of the Pillar of the Gods; so much so, in fact, that I needed to create a picture of it as it towers into the clouds.

The Emer book didn't have a location for it on the map so I'm guesstimating the island type around the pillar. I was wondering whether the pillar would be smooth or faceted and I figured that as it's been there for millions and millions of years, the elements would have smoothed it out.

The thumb image is below but the larger one can be seen on my sketchbook site here.

I thought I'd share my enthusiasm with you. ;)

Is it just me, or is your pillar leaning ver so slightly to the right?

It's going vertically up - but the perspective makes it look like it's leaning. The camera is facing upwards as much as it can to also include the sea in the pic as well as the pillar but the pillar is the intended focus.

If I had the camera facing horizontally level, The pillar would look vertical, but half the image would be the sea and the other half would be of the sky and pillar - but only the bottom of the pillar. :(

As the intension of the image is to show it disappearing into the clouds, I chose the former. ;)

What sort of islands does Thuul have? (mountainous, rocky, flat, jungle, forest, tropical, cold etc)

I did mention you in my blog and to come up with the whole of the Shadow World with all that detail is amazing!!! I'm picking up the different Shadow World publications from ebay as fast as I can and the 4th edition of the master atlas is being added to my next ICE postal order.

Depends on where you are on Thuul.  ;D

But from the point of view you set, according to the sun, the vegetation and the landscape looks ok.

What bother me most is the size of the pillar and the angle of view. as the Pillar is in the center of Thuul, a few hundred kilometer from any decent point of view, in the center of a massive Essaence disturbance, and it's something huge. (at least from what I envisionned of it by the various descriptions )

So
- if the view is not too far from the bottom, the pillar is just way too thin IMNSHO.
- if the view is set far enough from it to represent the real size, then there's not enough clouds between it and the point of view, again IMNSHO.

But I can always be wrong and Terry is the one that can tell what is right and what is wrong. ;)

But beside that, they are great, good job.

From what I read it as, it's VERY large and this is a fair distance away (as the water's would be far too choppy to sail on due to the essence disturbance) and I see your point - I'll add some more clouds!  :)
