Part 3 concerns Note 2 associated with Determine Minimum Crew (22) on VM. p. 117.

The TMAC minimum crew example adds up to 9.351 + 1 + 3 + 0.1 = 13.451, before being dropped to 2 per the example text on VM. 117.

Note 2 states that

Quote
Many craft are equipped with a sophisticated AI that replaces crewmen at a cost of ¢10,000 per crewman. In case of emergency, this leaves the crew dangerously understaffed for damage control procedures (-50). This cannot reduce a crew below 20% of its normal minimum.

I'm checking to make sure that I understand how the AI option works according to the text.

The normal minimum as calculated is 13.551, I rounding this to 14 for the minimum crew compliment. I think that I could have 11 AI systems and 3 living beings operating the craft.

Or does the rule mean that I could have a maximum of 3 AI systems and 11 living beings in the crew.

Minimum = 14

"Reduce a crew to below 20% of minimum"

20% of 14 is 3

=> 3 humans; remainder are AI

"Reduce a crew by 20% of minimum"

20% of 14 is 3

=> 11 humans; remainder are AI

I don't have the manual available to check. If your reported quote is correct, the number of humans absolutely required is only 3.

Hello Cormac Doyle,

Thank-you for the reply and confirming that my first calculation of 11 AI systems and 3 living crew was on the right track. The quote was copied and pasted from my pdf VM.
