Title: Professions from Companions in RMC
Post by: Fingolfin80 on December 29, 2017, 10:28:08 AM
Hello,
as I mentioned in some other thread I'm porting an RMFRP campaign to a customized system based on RM2/RMC (and partially RMU) I'm using RMC skills as a base, adding few others from Companion 2, but I'm using some profession from the various Companions and I'm having troubles to match some of the skills between RM2 and RMC. More specifically the problem regards the Lore skills: in RMC we have four Lore skills (General, Technical, Obsucure and Magical) that can be taken more than once to have various specializations, but any specialized variant has the same developement cost. In RM2 every the specialization is a different skill with a different cost, so I'm trying to figure out the costs of General, Technical, Obsucure and Magical Skills for the professions from the Companions, since these skills have not a single equivalent in RM2.
Is there any reference, guideline or similar "official" way to port RM2 professions to RMC?

General, Technical, Magical and Obscure are the categories from RMSS. If you want to know which specialisation is intended to fall into which skill, that's where you'd go to look.

General
Culture
Fauna
Flora
Heraldry
History
Philosophy
Region
Religion

Magical
Artifact
Circle
Glyph
Planar
Spell
Symbol
Undead
Warding

Obscure
Demon/Devil
Dragon
Faerie
Xeno

Technical
Herb
Lock
Metal
Poison
Stone
Trading

Edit: Ah, I got your question backwards. Still, I'd be looking at the skills within each category and eye-balling the common or average costs to come up with a value.

Well, yes and no. The same categories are used by RMC as a way to group together lore skills and give the same deveolpement cost to the skills in the same group. I liked it and I decided that was the way I wanted to rule it, but porting professions from RM2 means i have to figure out a single cost for the group instead of the many listed in the companions.

I agree, and this is what I was about to do, but before I wated to check out if there was an official ruling on this, or at least some indication.

Just a suggestion, as my own group uses Lore skills in a slightly different way to the core rules, although we do use RAW options (from CoII, IV, V and VII); Take the 4 categories and apply the following DP costs (ofc you can modify) based on the profession level bonuses:
+3: 1/2
+2: 1/4
+1: 2/5
+0: 3/6

Where your lore categories relate the the following professional bonus areas:
General - Academic
Magical - Magical
Obscure - Academic
Technical - General

You could go even further defined e.g., Poison Lore - Medical.

Example: Lay Healer (Level bonuses found in CoII)
+2 Academic skills = 1/4 DP for your General and Obscure Lore skills
+1 Magical Skills = 2/5 DP for your Magical Lore skills
+1 General Skills = 2/5 DP for your Technical Lore skills
I would also apply the Lay Healer's +3 level bonus to Poison Lore and Herb Lore DP costs, making those 1/2

Not quite what you asked for, but I hope it helps. Also not the system my own group uses, but close.

Thatnks for your suggestion, it seems promising, but I think I'll go with a sort of average of the RM2 skills. In many cases the cost is the same or has very little variation for a given profession, so it could be easier than I thought.

As a note, I'd suggest you to use the median rather than the mean value, in order to avoid having a lot of 2/6 costs.
