Hello there,

In our next session I'm having an enemy which deals an additional cold crit whenever it strikes with a melee attack. Some of the elves in my party (using merp classes) have a natural +20DB and RR vs Cold attack.

How would this work again the additional cold crit delivered by the melee slashing crit?

Micael

DB bonus and RR bonus vs. cold will raw not help vs. an additional cold crit, but you can rule, that the cold.crit will be not the same as the original crit. Instead you will use the +20 DB vs. the original attack and look if the crit. would be less in severity ( A instead of B for example) on the original attack table.

It might be quicker to just reduce the crit severity by one across the board. An offset of 20 is likely to do so most of the time.

I would maybe offer -20 from the cold crit roll if you wanted to allow the resistance.  68 C Slash crit and 48 C cold crit.

The issue is that it's not a cold attack.  The actual attack is with the weapon not a "cold-type" spell, i.e.: cold ball, cold cone, or even "lost outdoors without shelter in the frozen tundra."  For our group, we wouldn't allow any bonus/defense for this instance because it's not a cold attack, it's a melee attack with the normal crit result.  The weapon is happens to be enchanted to the point that it adds more effects when scoring a crit.

Thank you for the feedback and the reactions. In the end it wasn't needed. The party used excellent tactics and teamwork to take down the evil using this power. Our fighter fought so defensively (and I had a terrible night of bad rolls... well good for the party) that the evil never got a crit in.

<sigh>  I've had nights like that.  The BBG stood up to launch his spell.  The archer shot him in the throat with a 98 E-Puncture crit.
