I am also completing the full details of the Dansart citadel in Zor, though not sure where that will be going.

I think a lot of information mentioned in the Master Atlas 1 ed. never made it to the newer ones. I always wonder if some of those items/characters/places would change if you were to write about them again.
Thuul is where my 2 favourite 'natural' locations are - the Tower Isle and the Pillar of the Gods. :)

Sounds very Conan like, but that is just going by the name.

what I want?
In Xa-ar, there is that sort of plot-point-campaign. I wish, I could get more of these open-source, free-to-enhace and easy to gming campaigns in every sourcebook. I am completely flashed (as we say in germany) ;)
I don't normally write a lot of adventures. BUT, if that is what Shadow World fans would like to see, who am I to say no?
Discuss!

Please finish the Emer quarter before moving elsewhere.

Thanks Terry. I was reading through that story again just the other day and thinking it would be nice if you got around to cleaning up more of it. Hopefully you were reviewing Patrick's history to prepare for putting the final touches on the upcoming Shadowstone Chronicle release. Or maybe you get good stats from your web host and saw someone had been poking around? In either case, it's just what I needed to feed my addiction for Shadow World content until Emer III and the Shadowstone novel are ready.

Been doing lots of InDesign fun, but when taking a break (I can only do table formatting so many hours a day), I've been working on the updates for the older Shadow World reissues: Jaiman, Haalkitaine, Eidolon, Emer I and Emer II. Since Emer III is still in editing, I've been asked to expand the Adventures section, which originally was rather small. Now it looks like there are going to be several fairly detailed adventures, and a quest. Not as extensive as in Xa-ar, but with some details.I would personally like to see the Cult of the Third Moon adventure expanded, it is one of my favorite and I tend to add in some extra bits, like how the PCs get involved.
No matter what you do, I would like to have more (many, many more) of the important personages of those areas fleshed out. By that, I mean with stats, profession, level, equipment, etc..., but most importantly: personalities. That would help me dramatically by cutting down on the time it takes to do all of that.
Slightly off-topic, I had suggested to Nicholas at ICE that it might be fun to do an ICE RM supplement with the stats and background of all the characters who will be appearing in my upcoming novel. Of course many of them are familiar characters, but some have not really been detailed yet for Shadowstone readers (Patrick [all that Imperial tech!], Nelvana, Kim, Seylars, the other Red Dragons and Nightwings), and some are new characters altogether.

How about broadening that into a "Lords of Kulthea" supplement?
By important personages you mean powerful, or those more likely to be encountered by the PCs, or both? SlightlyBoth. Think of the number of possible people one could encounter in the court of Rhakhaan. If I don't have to make up ALL of those from scratch, and have some for guidelines when I do make others up, it would be a great help. For fun, just some random individuals that might be encountered, like the staff of a particular inn and/or tavern, or shop, or whatever, would be nice also.
Not if it turns out like the wedding in the latest episode of Game of Thrones!!! (I won't give anything away as I don't think you've got that far in watching the series yet)
But I'm excited about smaller modules! :)
I suggested to the SW Facebook followers that I might do a Xa-ar-style module (though not THAT large) of this region (wiping the old Sky-Giants slate pretty much clean, as those rights are gone anyway) and people there got pretty excited. What about my ICE forum friends??I could totally see that.

Hey Terry, It's been a long long time since we last talked and I seriously doubt you remember me. I am very happy to see you actually working with ICE now on Shadow World as that wasn't the case so many years ago. How did that book go you were working on? It was helping me to fill in some details from your modules. I believe it was centered in Jaiman, I'm not sure. I was one of those who were disappointed in the "Grand Campaign". I tried filling in the details myself for my game and it was to much overall. I understand that undertaking is nigh impossible to accomplish. So why not create a new "grand campaign" of sorts but publish it in different modules or parts? To be honest though anything for Shadow World would be great. Maybe even an open source campaign design with submissions from people on this list ;). Otherwise I think Thuul is a good idea.
One question though, do these new updates put everything together and complete that was incomplete or missing from some of the original books and updates?
Bruce
Hey, TKA, how do you get the images to do that? I would like to upload some of the images I used in my game to show what the Quellbourne area looks like, so the players could get into the feel of the place.

Hi Terry,
We've had a question from one of our twitter followers:
Hey, @IronCrown1 any chance of getting the Shadow World novels re-released as ebooks?
Have you thought about ebooks?
I have all four of the "Ian Hammel" novels and they might be of interest to other collectors of everything related to our favorite fantasy setting, but probably aren't worth trying to republish.
The first three form a series with characters from the first two reappearing in the third. The first "The Burning Goddess" is set on Aranmor, the second "Clock Strikes Sword" is set on a generic isolated island, and the third "City of Assassins" is set primarily in Eidolon. They are fine fantasy novels, but they are obviously taking place in some alternate universe version of Kulthea and the time-based magic of the second book feels out of place.
The "Ian Hammel" version of Stormriders is an edited (i.e. entire scenes removed to make it shorter) version of the one ICE had published.
Frankly, I'm much more excited about the newest incarnation of "The Journals of Kalen Avenir" and can't wait to see what changes and improvements have been made this time. The rewrite which turned it into "The Shadowstone Chronicle" was absolutely the right choice. My only concern now is that a few weeks in "Terry time" can turn into a year or more.
Some new information about the fall of Zor (but I'll save most of the Zor stuff for the Jaiman revision);Cool.
a lot more about the Taranians and their subshuttle, and a couple of bases. Players could even run a Taranian character, woken from cryo-sleep.Very, very cool.
Expedition to the Barrier Peaks is one of my all-time favorite modules. ;D
That one is news to me. The story above is from 'Wuliris' that I'm working onYeah, I got that. It is just that Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was the module where fantasy adventurers investigated a new "dungeon" that turns out to be a long-lost crashed spaceship. So, I am seeing similarities there, and I like it.
Does it frighten you that I remember when Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was published? Excuse me while I poke you with my zimmer frame.... :)No, because I do too; I am one of the old-school gamers, also. :o
*Yes, I bathe in food dye. ;)Just so long as it is not Red Dye #5.
IMHO, you have a chance to be unique and set a standard for Shadow World, so do it. Just make a note at the beginning of the book as to what you have done and say it is a SW standard not Int English Stand.
But that is just my OP
MDC
What about Tethior? Maybe we will find out that being an Alchemist is truly boring, and that is the real reason he went on to do that other secret thing he does sometimes.
I can't speak for everyone, but if I had a control system like the Enterprise bridge and lots of time, I would be pressing buttons. I might take careful notes and not rush through it, but button-pressing would definitely be happening.I think that depends upon the results of the button pushing. Little to not effect, sure keep going; destroy a continent, I think I would stop. :o
Personally I hate the overly zealous use of style manuals. I'll miss (most of) the ellipses, but did your editor also notice your liberal use of the em-dash? The dashes and ellipses add an element of informality that I like. And I hope you explained the grammar rules of Iruaric so she doesn't "fix" the plurals in sentences like "Eleven gold Orlini each."
Is that second novel all new content or just the fact that the first 30+ chapters of the Shadowstone story were already about 2 novels worth? I'll be eagerly awaiting the third (and fourth, etc.) novel anyway, but a collection of short stories is almost just as good.
Sorry, I meant to answer your question not asking my own.
Patrick would be my pick. Maybe you could use a few good flashbacks as an excuse to at least give us the summarized version of what happened to him at Thessel IV. But any stories about people living on Kulthea would be interesting. I've always loved the little stories, quotes, and notes that start the chapters of your Shadow World modules.
The bridge posts above are very timely as a friend of mine just sent me an email with a co-op bridge sim game like ST.
Also a note, in my world I would design the bridge with DNA reading so it would not let people access the controls who were not supposed to. But then again where is the fun in that. :D
One last semi-off-topic post and then back to SW: Another reason I was thinking about this was while rewatching an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise (easily my least favorite of all the series, but I've mellowed on some of it with the years). It's a two-parter set in the evil Terran Empire universe, where they encounter a starship Defiant from not only the Federation universe but 100 years in the future (that wasn't a stretch). Anyway, poor Trip was on the bridge of basically the TOS Enterprise trying to figure out all those unlabeled candy-colored buttons while snarly evil Archer kept telling him to do it faster or he would vaporize him (that always works). And, desperate genius engineer that he is, Trip figures it out.

I'm watching some episodes of Enterprise for the first time (I missed them the first and second times around) but that particular two-parter highlights what I consider to be one of the main problems with the series - trying to make the technology look more primitive when using more advanced effects. Which simply doesn't work, the Constellation class ship looks more primitive than the Enterprise, but is supposed to be more advanced.
Ever wonder what's been happening on that far-flung western peninsula of Jaiman, Ly-Aran? Separated from the rest of the continent, part of it perilously close to Ulor, but much open to the vast uncharted Forbidden Sea…I have that same problem, but haven't been able to control it like you have. I cannot tell you how many notebooks I have filled with a variety of story, game, TV-show, movie, etc... plots and ideas, partially formed (even with characters and new races written up about 70-80%). Some of these take up a few score pages (mostly both sides), sometimes just for a few pieces of the story. Sheesh. I really need to just pick one, sit down and bang it out. (What I really need is someone with a gun pointed at my head, telling me to write...)

Oof, back to all the other projects I already have underway.

I'm like that too, except with poetry sites and facebook & emails. :)For me it is these message boards and the RPG.net ones, as well as google images as I surf for cool pix to use in game.
Today I met a girl called Emer Freeth.OK, that is hilarious. Have a laugh point.
I kept calling her Emer III.
I'm pretty sure she hates me.
I see what you mean about their elegance. Thank you for that (this comes from a diehard Times New Roman fanatic; I won't compose in anything else if I can have a choice...). :)

Wow... it took you guys less than 3 hours to notice.
We're looking at turning those generally meaningless bits into something of value for the OIC.
The announcement is getting closer.... Please stand by....
I have limited funds, being on a Disability Pension, and since I had a poetry reading yesterday that I save up for (I usually manage between $250 to $300 a month) so I can help support the venue & my fellow poets, I didn't see how I could make an equitable offer.
Yes, I kick myself now....
Lastly a wish:
Could you do Lethys and maybe Cynar in the new Jaiman book? It wouldn't need to be as detailed as Eidolon or Halkiitaine but city map and a couple of pages to flesh those out.
Thank you a lot

I read in the latest GCP update (http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=13650.0) that a Lethys city book, by another author but vetted by Terry, is in the earliest stages of development.
I ended Loremaster legacy a few days ago... Enjoyed it a lot - even though I prefer printed books million times over e-books...
While reading it I was checking my old SW books. Some questions / comments from cross referring the books.
In LL Hiiri Taldin was clearly cleric and human/something and but In Eidolon 1st ed he is shay/laan monk. Obviously LL is the latest word. Are 2nd ed Eidolon changes fixing these kind of things?
New Eidolon cover is nice but the original cover in 1st edition Eidolon was one of the best ever - it would be shame to see it gone. Could you / ICE put that also in the book - I'd like to see several illustrations of Se-lkai/Eidolon in the 2nd edition (as they are around). Just to show PC's to visualize the place.
Messangers have been neutered in gaming terms/stats. In older books esp. Ironwind and Jaiman messangers were truly frightening also in gaming stats. Now (e.g. Xaar) they are merely competent or below average considering the level - generic NPC charts RM2 and RMSS/RMFRP give more competent fighters without quality/magic items mentioned in later books. Is this intentional for some gaming reasons as in fiction they still seem to be quite formidable?

You read correctly. I am hoping that it will pan out.
Just reviewed the Director's Briefing... http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=13650.0
Had to LOL that so many of my projects are 'Strange' (though maybe that is a term that means something different in the UK, like 'grotesque.') As Nicholas indicated, they are somewhere in a time-space anomaly between rewrite and production... so maybe 'strange' is not such a misnomer.
Hi,
could you provide any info regarding...
"we have The Priest King of Shade and the Lethys sourcebooks in Precontract with substantial material already written, and I hope that both of these will move to Preproduction soon. We will be making a formal call for Shadow World adventures in the very near future - Terry and I are still working up the call instructions." ?
Finishing up my Emer III adventure layouts then back to Eidolon.
I am curious what SW fans would like to hear from me on the forums. As you can probably tell, I visit often, and I love to interact with people who like SW. Would you like a section where you can ask specific questions about aspects and places, and if so, would you like it answered for the GM by me and/or by some semi-reliable source like the Loremasters?

Any of your listed options sound good, but what I want to see most are the Emer I and II revisions, please. ;)
Fascinating stuff, an exploration ship near Antarctica was trapped by floating ice, pulled in by a low pressure system. Icebreakers from 3 countries are on the way to get them out. Great research material for the module I'm writing set in the far north of Kulthea where there are similar shifting ice floes.

I had never heard of floating ice chunks trapping a ship because of low pressure before, so this is fascinating stuff
Something else: Artefacts and Lost Tech. I think there was another something else as well, but I can't remember what.
hi terry
more informations about artifacts and lost technologies?
interaction between dia khovaria and namar tol?
description of the city of the death?
descriptions of some taranian structures?
more details about jinteni and worim?
I am currently leading a campaign in shadowworld medium level, with a designer artist known as a player (william Tibaud illustrator from xa aar).
we try to fill the gaps supplements.
william anime oriented jinteni worim campaign and mine jerak succession and outdoor operation (devon province) on kulthea.
You'll get tons of information about the Jinteni in Emer III (including a little about the City of the Dead, but that mostly will wait for Emer IV)
Busy busy! Last 8 hours lots of work on Eidolon and Emer II, and now working on a comprehensive Subshuttle map for the new Wuliris module.

What was the language of taranians? where did thy came from? we know that this people was a former people colonized by Althans people. however they looked like what? techno level reached at the time of the crash? (the famous scale from 1 to 16)
did they could mastered the essence?
life, weapons, architecture. contacts with other primitive races?
I invent all these answers on my side, but I would like additionals info from you terry, you will understand. in our version of shadow world, after the rise of the continent tarania, we have cryogenically survivors who had emerged.
what becomes the soul of a Althan or ktaviir in death?
I made the assumption that their souls were in a place locked by one of eissa keys on her belt.
seen that the Althans mastered the interdimentionnal travel, we can think of the survivors fled and founded colonies elsewhere?
etc etc etc
terry, your world is far from being death. please, give us (sell is more appropriate) more and more informations.
we are inspired as never.
ho, a personnal rq about althans:
althans are monstrous (physically, psychic and spell manipulation).
when i see their tech level, I have extrapolated what would be a former soldier Althan with cybernetics and nanotechnology implanted. scary! this was inspired from various books sf:
-the legacy of armaggedon (david weber)
-The Old Man and War (john scalzi)
-Path of the Fury (david weber)
bye terry
I, too, would love more information on both the Taranians (sounds like it could be a warped way of saying Terrans, to me, so maybe that is a clue to their origins) and the Terran Empire - specifically those elements found on and near Kulthea. All that stuff is very interesting to me. Also, would love to see a published adventure that is basically the Rolemaster version of Expedition to the Barrier Peaks...
I wish our forum had something like the Facebook 'like' button, to show that you read a post and agree/like it...I guess that would be clearer, but I was hoping my response was understood.

Yes. I like where you are going with the Shadow World stuff.
when you post, when you answer, i like !!!!
and althans with nanotechnology? (those without psionic power?)
ordainer morlock was the only kadaena bodyguard? a demon?
even an althan elite force? :)
Hah! Yes your response was very clear and much appreciated! I just meant in general; sometimes I read a post on the forums and like it, but don't want to go to the trouble of doing a full-blown reply. That would be handy.

I definitely have been thinking of ACC when I run fantasy these days. It just seems to allow me to deepen my experience and give me more ideas.

I agree with shanarakthefair whole-heartedly. I'd love to see some more info old Althan technology and installations. I've been breaking out the Spacemaster books and adapting things for that, but I know that they were actually way ahead of the Terrans so I'm sure even my updates are falling short of their grandeur. More info on the Interregnum cultures and peoples would be nice too.
Thanks for all of your hard work over the years, Terry. I'll be very happy with whatever you decide to work on next.
I'm having terrible writer's block on the Eidolon adventures.
I think I've found a... more effective... inducement....
Terry: we want that revision now (or else I'' complete the following)
The Ballad of Terry K. Amthor

terry, i want the artifacts and lost technology in may 2014. (with the gibbs voice) ;)
with gibbs voice:
what could be interesting is a description for other continent (not emer or jamain). more informations about ash lairs. about navigators and their headquarters.
hurry up boy, we are waiting. and hardcover version for your last publication :)
william got it and he told me that there are missing characteristics (about a brother and sister, no more informations here to avoid spoil ;D) he is right?
Oh. My. God. I don't even know where to begin with this.
Now write me one to the tune of 'I vow to thee my country, and when I am done weeping, I will write.
I was looking at the numbers of the recent Shadow World books. Player's Guide is 1, Cloudlords is 4 and Emer III is 5. I assume one of the other two is Xa'ar but what is the other number?
That's a good question. Xa-ar is 1003. I guess there wasn't a 1002, or that is reserved for something, maybe the planned World GM Guide (which I am just the editor of).
Haven't heard anything about Jaiman or Haalkitaine in a long while. Any thoughts/progress on those? Also, like egdcltd, I too am curious as to when we might see a GM's Guide companion to the Player's Guide.
Was there an image of some type of watchtower on the old Eidolon site? I recall seeing one somewhere - and I don't think it was an U-Lyshaak one - and that's the only place left I can think of.
Yes, the top one is the one I was thinking of, thanks. What is it a picture of? I think it was somebody's watchtower, but that's all I can remember.
lol... I love how we totally managed to sidetrack you with this idea of writing adventures for Shadow World that are not hooks tied to the sourcebooks. If only other writers and companies listened as much to their fans as you do. :)
Terry, looking to the future, will this new endeavour signify a few standalone adventures, an anthology containing several, or both?
How does Nicholas smack you from across the pond? Is it some sort of editors ability or a editors spell? ;D

We seem to have developed a sort of email version of the Gibbs/McGee relationship (If you watch NCIS) where I start to prattle on about some nerdy random thing that interests me at the moment, and if the subtle glare does not work (i.e., ignoring my rambling and asking how x project is going), the verbal smack comes. All authors need an editor, or at least a monitor.
that is what programming is like as well....and then someone interrupts you and it all goes poof!

Is it possible to vote for "all of the above"?
Seriously, I've really been looking forward to Wuliris. I'd like to see you eventually finish off regional books for all of Jaiman and Emer in as much detail as you've done for Xa'ar and Emer III.
That said, quality adventures wouldn't ever be received poorly.
I'm curious why Emer II is being revised before Emer I. The revisions of those (and other modules) are important for the setting as a whole for attracting new people, but less appealing for existing ones.
Present day European nations pride themselves on having 1,000 to 1,500+ year histories - how would the people of Rhakhaan regard their own history?Considering they are along side the immortal elves, whose history (and many individual lives) stretches back even further, probably not all that highly.

Beneath Haalkitaine, could be very cool.
BTW, my adventure module idea, 'Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn' centers around a town in Rhakhaan next to an ancient Earthwarden bridge with mystical warding and portal powers. Not to mention the town is at a crossroads, next to a moor, and populated by all number of questionable people. I think you might like it.Could you do one favor for me: Put a dang wall around the town and don't have the swamp and/or forest grow right up and into the town, please.

I really do not understand the concept that a settlement would not have basic defensive features in a fantasy world filled with all manner of ickiness. Not to mention, that half of the villages are not only unwalled/defended, but they are comprised of a bunch of houses like on The Little House on the Prairie and have the woods growing right up and into them! Even our world's Middle-Aged villages did not have that, for the simple fact that the land needed to be cleared for crops. But to have woodlands go through the village is just asking to be eaten while you sleep, or do anything at any time of day. The only time I could see the "typical" unwalled/defended village is if it is within the most central part of a civilized region, which probably means they see 2-3 guard sweeps per day, minimum of 1, but multiple per week, and they are not far from a much larger settlement with all sorts of high-level back up. (Of course, another reason would be it is inhabited by extremely high-level & powerful individuals, so if you are traveling in the wildlands and happen upon a small village, unwalled, seeming very idyllic, be afraid and treat everyone there with great respect because they are powerful enough to deal with all the monsters that would come around - until they learned better, of course - just about every day. Can you say Shadowdale?)
Sorry, but that has become a serious pet-peeve of mine. Sure the woods look all cool drawn on the map, and it gives them a reason to use "Forest Green", but it makes absolutely no practical sense whatsoever from a "I want to live past 3" sense.
LOL!!! :D I had to go back to Emer III to make sure, but the village of Misty Vale does indeed have a wall, and no pretty trees nearby. Whew! And yes, Gryphonburgh will be a 'practical' town. The moor does not butt up right against the town, but it's just south of the highway, and in any case, to have a crossroads of two major paved roads and a major river all meeting up, along with the last bridge west of the capital, you'd live there too.Thanks. Sorry to sound like a map freak, but I guess I am that - both in that I love maps (all sorts) and want them to make sense (more than I do, anyway :o).

Ever played Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim? Now those are societies that would have trouble surviving. Most minor settlements are completely undefended, built on roads so dangerous it's surprising anyone gets through, and often built within spitting range of monster-infested ruins.Yeah, in Skyrim I didn't even try to take on a single giant (and his mammoth, of course - they can't go anywhere without one of those) until I was at least 15th level. Up until then I just ran away. In more than a few places the giants were within a few moments* walk of a settlement.
Still on this Jaiman adventure, which has now bloated up to 44+ pages (how does this happen?), but have been bouncing back and forth between that and other things. There are now 20 adventures/adventure ideas, so I am going to need to pare that down some...They don't need to be completely fleshed out, just good story hooks and info on locations and NPCs / Creatures. But, if you are fully fleshing them out, I won't complain... ;D and the more the merrier.

Go Terry, go! :)
Well, if the idea is to have Ready-to-run adventures for SW, then I encourage the greatest level of detail possible in order to alleviate the GM's time investment.
Having said that, and with my hard copy of Emer III soon to be in my hands, it's time to crack the whip on Terry and get those Emer I & II revisions done, as well as Emer IV under way. I want a complete continent to run a campaign in, not an invisible line the players can't cross. :D
..RE the adventures, since I now have about 20 adventure ideas noted, I think I might try to flesh out the first 8-10 in detail, and leave the rest as Adventure Hooks with just a few notes. Otherwise this thing will never be done.
I like reading them. Updates show that stuff is progressing.
Incidentally, have you thought about doing any playtesting?
I played in a Kult (modern horror, I edited the US edition back in the 90's) play-by-email game years ago and it was exceptionally fun.You did?

(Runs to bookshelf, grabs copy and flips it open to credits page. "Oh." Runs back to computer. [OK, run was little over the top for my hobbling gait. ;D])
Yup, so you did. I like the rules system on that game - not so much the setting, it was a little too angels/demons/sadomasochism for me. I prefer the "monster hunter" type settings like the old Chill RPG. But, as I said, I really like the rules system as I like games where there are levels of success not just yes/no.
I would be interested in a play-by-post of Shadow World, ran by its author. I have barely scratched the surface of PBP, but I am willing to give it a go.
I must admit some lingering curiosity about why the old Grand Campaign aborted concept still inspires so much interest. Was it the pre-designed quest? The player-characters with integral backgrounds? The detailed, plotted-out adventures? All of the above?

For me it is the detailed, plotted out adventures. I am not really in the market for adventure ideas as I have way too many of those already... I way my job as a GM made easier not more jobs...
Secondly would be the player characters who are integrally involved.

I never cared much about pre-created characters... But the rest had it's appeal when I was lazy ( or didn't have enough time to prepare something ). I could just pop a GC adventure appropriate to where my players were and keep them busy for the session, without having to go fully ad-lib.
And there was something else too... The flexibility of the campaign... You could insert one of it's adventure in the middle of the rest of the campaign you were doing and keep your players completely unaware that it had a greater purpose...Last, the whole idea of the Grand Campaign... What is hinted by the notes on what has not been written is irresistible from my point of view....
Terry, what are you moving on to once Emer II is done? Emer I, Emer IV, Eidolon, Jaiman, or your adventure?
I do wonder if there will be any point in redoing the Jaiman book now. It seems to be being made obsolete like the old Emer boxed set. There's the new Xa-ar and Wulriis books, the revamped Cloudlords and the proposed edit of Haalkitaine. With a few more, the entire continent will be largely covered, so maybe it would be better to take the relevant material from Jaiman and add it to those areas that haven't been covered.
In keeping with this possible notion of further "regionalizing" Jaiman, do you think there'd be enough material (and interest) to do perhaps two additional separate sourcebooks, one for Zor/Ja'miil Targ/Saralis (whatever isn't covered in Xa-ar or Wuliris, that is), and one for the area from Norek/U-lyshak stretching west/southwest into Ly-aran and possibly Ulor itself?
Or maybe the two ideas could be combined.

Still, a small 'overview' book of the whole continent might be nice. There was mention that future Player's Guides would cover individual continents. That would probably work here.
I tend to jump back and forth between books/topics
I tend to write pen and paper jottings, then start on the computer with section titles, notes and sentence fragments, then come back later and expand on them, into proper sentences and paragraphs. If I leave it too long, the fragments tend not to make sense though.
(I have notepads in every room)Wow, I thought I was the only one... (I guess in a world of 7 billion+ people, no one is the "only one" for just about anything.)
Here's a random artifact for you... a poison case disguised as a book. Love the latches!
Here's a random artifact for you... a poison case disguised as a book. Love the latches!
That's an interesting item; where did you find it?
As a little teaser for Emer II: I took the regional color map and broke it up into sections that make more sense (some of the old map sections were mostly water). The sections are also at different scales (trying to be sure I got the correct scale on each one), and have a lot more information.
In the post above, the 2 items in your sig have 0 bytes, meaning they are nothing but a title. I am assuming that they are not supposed to be like that.
I've been looking through the Jaiman book again. How likely is it that some of the places in there (Nomikos, Gryphon College etc.) could be expanded into full supplements of their own? Say, about 32 pages, with descriptions, NPCs and adventures. Admittedly, that would require a fair bit of expansion on the existing material.
Yes, I wasn't sure where those locations could go. They're sort of important, and could well be visited, but they may not be adventure locations by themselves. Or maybe they could be - Harry Potter was set in a school after all.
The alternatives I though of were individual supplements for certain places, an individual supplement that had several places of interest in it, and adding them to an adventure collection that visited them.
We have talked some about doing a GM Guide for each of the continents, and the Jaiman one would be a smaller book with just background, but more detail about all the realms, rulers, weather, GM maps, etc. Maybe the above locations could go there, as reference for the GM.With Jaiman being more and more fleshed out by different past and future books, there is the question indeed, whether an overall Jaiman book is needed at all. I'm not convinced by the idea of GM Guides for the continents. What would be in there that I don't already know?

What does everyone think?
What software do you use to write in? I've just started looking at tools such as Scrivener for my more complex projects.
How do you manage to keep everything organised with Word? Or is it simply done through experience?
Anyway, you got me thinking about Jaiman, and I ended up doing some work on the Wuliris book!
Anyway, with this discussion of Jaiman, I am thinking more that a separate GM continent guide would be best (I think Matt H. suggested this?) with general history, and an overview of the continent, with profiles of each realm including the political structure, who's in charge, etc, with some secret GM info on intrigues. Lots of general maps and travel information. This is something that I would actually prefer to edit rather than write, with someone pulling in all the already written stuff from Jaiman, Tanara and Xa-ar, and adding material for NE, and SW that I would provide basic outlines of. It would be a smaller book, like the Player Guide.
Maybe I do need Scrivener...Terry, I think Scrivener would be well worth the investment for you (buy and learn investments, really). I got a copy the other year via NaNoWriMo discount.

Airplane is one move I cannot stand as my roommates in college watched it almost every day. Our room had a TV (mine) and VHS player and quite a few people on the floor came over to watch and everyone loved Airplane. So much that the movie was one at least 2 times every week and I just got burnt out on it.

Does it look like Emer II will be the next to be ready after Gryphonburgh then?
My personal preference would be for Eidolon (or Haalkitaine) before Emer II, but I can wait. Or I could think of more distractions - the Loremaster HQ for example.I would like to see that also, the Loremaster's HQ.
Not to add to the workload, but have you considered (or already plan) putting in Gryphonburgh some generic PCs for use by those new to the system(s)? I once mentioned to Nicholas that it might be interesting to have a set of Rolemaster "iconics" who appear throughout the product line (like the red-border McBride PC group of days gone by).
If there is interest, maybe they could be created (but not by me, except in broad strokes). We do have an eclectic adventuring group, which can be seen in illustrations in the Emer III module, which Matt and I (if I recall) did some backgrounds on so we would have an ongoing adventure group in the spirit of the old RM book covers.

The Quest! I might actually watch 'reality' TV!
Possibly some of the grunt work for Artefacts could be outsourced, if you state any sources you'd like text scanned from, for example.

There are a few adventurers in a group together that'll be running through the SW line as more books come out (and you'll have already seen some of them already).
Matt was going to create them as example characters when the RMU books were released (as these adventurers were going to be used in illustrations in those books as well). But to have them multi-stated for all RM versions in the SW book would also be great! :)
Can't wait for Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn! When will it be available?
That's actually quicker than I would have expected.
hi terry.
spoiler!!
a question about emer III, about the a'kesh daughter.
will you give us the stats?
i don't remember well (no emer III near me) but i think the brother stats are in the book.
i think the daughter is really interesting for my campaign. ;)

Is this an upcoming sale, because they aren't currently discounted?
I turns out that the sales are only through certain links. Stay tuned and hopefully we can give you more details.
There is a Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. Guessing that sounds extremely similar.
To buy Xa-ar, I'd need to get the hardcopy as a discount. I originally bought the PDF (from the store on this site, I think, as it doesn't show on my RPGNow account) and printed it out and had it bound myself, so I'm probably not going to buy another hardcopy version at full price.
The quality of RPGNow's PoD stuff is vastly superior to mine, I will say.
I've just come across a PDF of Emer I on the internet, which probably shouldn't be there. Who should I report the URL to?
Its hard to do anything about, torrent sites have evrything theese days.
I just checked and you can sadly find all RM books ever made.
Hi Terry,
this is a small note and maybe I am just remembering it from another thread. Could you include some sort of color coding for the houses in town? It makes mastering that much easier if you can quickly see what kind of locations are located on a given street by the color of their roof tops.
Terry, what formats is Green Gryphon going to available in? PDF and POD softcover, I assume, but is there a possibility of a hardcover? Also, will there be detached maps for players to use?
And just out of curiosity, do you all enjoy these little updates (which is pretty much a mini-blog, I guess?), and is there info you would prefer to hear about?
I remember asking you back in February about a revision of Haalkitaine and you mentioned that the original was in very good shape and needed very few changes, just some new art, tweaked layouts, and some adventures. Any word on where this revision stands seven months later? I ask because a copy of the original has popped up for sale somewhere but the asking price is a bit scary and I'd rather purchase a new edition. However, if one is not forthcoming, I'd settle for the original.
I managed to pick up a wrapped, brand new version of Haalkitaine a few years back for about £10 or so from a local shop. Seeing what it's selling for now unwrapped. I kind of wish I'd left it sealed (or bought the other two copies). Especially as the spiral binding seems to wear out faster.
Well, remember that those spiral bound books were run on a laser printer by me back in the 90's (Haalkitaine was in 1998, 16 years ago.) And sometimes the shrink-wrap could actually damage it if exposed to heat and sunlight.
Oh, and about Loremaster Legacy (remember the novel?), there was some interest in a PoD hardcopy. I have it mostly done, if there is still interest; in any case I have formatted it in InDesign, which should make for a better layout. And the next book has a bit of a different flavor, with groups splitting off across Jaiman...
Thanks for the update on Haalkitaine, Terry. As long as it is still in the pipe, I don't mind waiting a few more months. It sure beats paying $120 for that old copy, even if it is listed at Near Mint condition. :P
Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn will be softcover only. It should be big enough for a sound perfectbound softcover. I think technically it might be possible to have a hardcover - I would need to check the specs - but it would not be a happy hardcover binding - just a bit too small.
We don't offer the old versions of Haalkitaine etc as pdfs so as not to distract people from the new enhanced versions. (*cracks whip*)

Yes, I'd agree with it being a bit small. I just got Cloudlords in hardcover, and I don't think anything much thinner would really look any good.
I think GCP discontinued selling any PDFs that are being upgraded, so that people only get the new version, not the old. And $120 is actually on the low side. It's listed on Amazon UK at £400+ for a used and £540+ for new. Maybe I'd better get mine sealed up and preserved! I still have the PDF.
But someone did ask abut detachable maps. It would be easy to add copies of maps at the end of the POD book with blank backs, and the owner could slice them out, but it would add to the cost. Would you want us to do that?Personally I don't need them detatchable, but printable. So no watermarks, please. (Lets keep that down to a minimum with the rest of the document too, OK?)
Wow, I have a few copies of Emer II (well, damaged through moving). I am a mazed at these prices. Maybe I should sell off those last few ME modules.

Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by watermarks... as in type overlaid on a comp photo? There should not be any sort of watermark on any PDF purchased from GCP/ICE. If you bought a PDF you should be able to print it.I haven't seen it in any ICE/GCP (thats how I think of the company, with ICE first ;-) products but I just want to throw it out there because I have seen others do it and it makes it impossible to read sometimes. I love me some artistry, just don't loose out on the functionality. And yes, text over pictures or a fancy background is what I am talking about. Just make sure that all the text is clearly readable and OCR'd please. If it is highlightable and copy-able I can more easily put together player packets by copying and editing instead of typing it all out. (I put together a 20-page Gnomes of Greyhawk for my most recent AD&D game, along with similar packets for the other races. Being able to copy and paste the text directly into a word document really, really, really helps out. Of course, there were pictures (not over text!) so it wasn't 20-pages of wall-to-wall text.)
I was the one that asked about detachable maps because I only buy the hard copies and I think it is a very useful perk to be able to hand your players a map, like a region or a town.

Terry, forgive my spotty memory as I know this has been answered before but is either Iron Wind or Vog Mur due for a possible revision? I know you mentioned being hesitant about touching at least one of them due to... rights or old file formats or some such?
Busy-busy-busy on NE Jaiman! Lots of progress on regions, interesting places, and animals. Also begun mapping out the Subshuttle system. I love it when I am in a productive cycle! (And oops, need to finish that last adventure of Gryphon...) 8)
Terry, when time permits and at your leisure, have you ever considered writing a tell-all blog about the creative process and discussions, meetings, etc, that provided the genesis for Shadow World? I think it would make for a fascinating insight as to how this fantasy world and some of its particulars came about, though I'm unsure how in depth you can get given any lingering rights with the old ICE and any others who may have contributed to the project, like Pete.
Well, as I delve into running a Middle-Earth game and have been reading The Court of Ardor, I can see some of the genesis there, and in other ICE MERP products.
So, it looks like Scotland is staying in the United Kingdom! I'm personally relieved, though I think that Scotland certainly has some legitimate grievances that I hope will be addressed. Being equal parts Scottish/Welsh/English/German and a shameless Anglophile, I was following this closely. Back when I was a kid my family drove around Scotland: we visited Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, Edinburgh, Glasgow and I remember a town called Pitlochry. We also visited several cool castles.
Anyway, back to Shadow World. Lots more done on Wuliris, last touches on Green Gryphon, and started a long edit on a submitted module about the city of Lethys. Lots of interesting ideas, but it will have some input from me. We'll see how it goes!

Terry, any ideas or sketches yet for the cover of Gryphonburg?
How about Eidolon? Are you permitted at all to use the artwork from the original cover, or do you want/prefer fresh new art that clearly states this is a new edition?
I know there have been mixed opinions about Loremaster Legacy. What about a new fiction book with a series of short stories featuring different characters from the Shadow World?

I'm not a huge fan of short stories. I tend to find them too, well, short. I only read them if I have to, when events in them are referred to in main books in a series (eg, David Weber's Honorverse short story collections).
I find that unless your campaign is based around breaking the law, assassinating people, or bringing down legitimate organizations or kingdoms, having an adventuring group that is basically evil is counterproductive to getting anything done. If played true to those alignments, the pursuit of wealth and power through murder and mayhem soon gets old and the characters inevitably prey upon one another, essentially imploding the game. That's if they are doing their alignments justice. Unless everyone is LE, any kind of loyalty soon flies out the window.I do as well, as a GM. Basically because I don't want to be running a game that is all about murder, theft, selfishness, and all that, it is not fun for me. Even when I run Shadowrun, I go away from the typical playstyle of them being mercenaries ("runners" in SR speak) because that sort of motivation is terrible, imo, and I do not want to propagate it as a viable/laudable lifestyle, even in fiction form. To me, those who do that stuff are the bad-guys, the enemy to be defeated.
Moral of my story? If I want a lasting campaign, I disallow evil PCs.
What would happen if Andraax really went off the rails?
It depends upon how he goes "off the rails." As Yamma said above, he could become a tyrant, or he could become the drooling nearly catatonic guy standing in the corner. I guess it depends upon how the story needs him to be.
Guess I should work on LL II
I don't think there's anything wrong with repeating some of the information as long as it doesn't hurt the page count for the new stuff. Does that make sense?
I second that. It can even be helpful if you want to get your bearings on what material you already know and where the new stuff comes in. It's good to see some familiar sections and then see them expanded.
What I don't like is reading and then realizing that it is in fact the same material just paraphrased with different words.
Concerning Jaiman and flow storms. One map I really appreciate is the map of essence flows in the Jaiman source book. I have used it repeatedly in order to check if the party was indeed located within one of those flows. If they were, I rolled a percentage chance whenever one of them cast a spell. On a success, the spell went through as planned. On a failure, they did not cast the spell they wanted to. I had them roll 1D100 to see where they actually landed. A beautifully chaotic turn of events that could be. Yes indeed ::)
As for the Flows map, well I can certainly do more. I am curious how much other GMs use the Flows, Flow Barriers and Flow Storms as a regular part of their games???When I Gm Shadow World they can be a big part, though it does depend upon the campaign (is it set in a fairly small area, or a far-traveling one?) and the PCs, such as if there are magicians and/or others who teleport on a regular basis.

Hah, I try not to ramble and repeat myself, but I also hate to mention something and then send the reader to some other location in the book for a more complete description when I can summarize something there. For instance, now I am working on the Wuliris GM map, with dozens of keyed Items. In the key, I am including a descriptive line for a place, and for the more interesting places, I do make a reference to later in the book where it is fleshed out, but I also give a very brief description here.

This map has been very important in my game based primarily in Jaiman.

Well then I will do them! But in general, they track to mountain ranges and tectonic plate edges, and minor ones do shift.
I have started a campaign using Emer III, and would have loved a flow map to guide with the location of the stronger flows in the region.
Thanks for the map Terry!.
So... it seems the run along the major mountain ranges... I have never before seen a connection between mountains and essaence. Is it because of the great volumes of earth and rock? The caves that run underneath?
Interesting take on Andraax there Metallion. Not quite what I play with, but intriguing none the less. Outlook wise my Andraax is similar, a sentient life or an entire civilization for that matter is a small price to pay for the continuity of the cosmos.

A nice city/trading post with ruins in the country side would be excellent.
What would you MOST like to get from the NE Jaiman Wuliris module? Taranian outposts, Zorian ruins, current strange cities in Wuliris, Evil Frost Elves...?In order of MOSTness: 1. current strange cities, 2. Taranian outposts, 3. Evil Frost Elves, 4. Zorian ruins
How much new material would you want before new editions of Emer I, Emer II, Jaiman and Eidolon were worth it for youThat's a bit hard to say, it depends on what kind of new material we're talking about. But from what you've posted so far, my feeling is that the new editions will be worth the purchase.
How important is new artwork vs. content?I like craggles' artwork and would love to see some of his work in future SW books. That said, if I had to choose one over the other, it would be new content.
I do love Cirque, and I could imagine the Prince of Sel-kai gathering acrobats from Nuyan and other lands, and putting on huge dramatic spectacles in some great domed hall in Eidolon for the gathered merchant nobility.Totally. I have yet to go to one of their shows, but I want to.

Is not Zor wastes a cold desert, Terry?I tend to as well, but with the Zor wastes I like to imagine a magical effect of the destruction warms it up compared to the surrounding lands, on the average of 10-15 degrees (F). Still not super hot (like Arizona summer hot), but warm enough to throw visitors off.
How would you describe that place? I usually associate 'Jaiman' with 'Cold', but maybe I'm wrong.

People have been asking about rules for hot/cold and mountain rules for years as well as dehydration and some general rules for exposure. I think most of them were coming from other game systems looking for something to adapt to their D&D clone game/company.
MDC
If you are working on Zor how do you handle radiation poisoning? Not sure if that has been touched on.
Just to throw rocks, what about magic radiation? Or that is to say radiation that is fueled/fed/sustained by magic? Is that a possibility? IIRC there are some radiation crit charts in the SM:P Data Nets and in the RM2 books somewhere.
MDC
What about the idea that it set up a natural nuclear reactor - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_nuclear_fission_reactor
Perhaps Zor was lucky enough (eh?) to reside on top of such an area - that hadn't been tapped out by the K'ta'viir: it wasn't pure enough for them to use perhaps. Then a combination of the cataclysm and the magical forces involved transmuted the materials in the ground and caused the radiation?
I'm scared to even dip my toe in the (apparently) interesting RMU discussion, partly because I feel like the new blood should have their say without the cranky old guy from the early days of RM sticking his nose in things. Because if I got in there, I would have opinions. We had arguments for days about the old system.
But I am wondering how the old Monks vs Bards thing is playing out. I always said that Monks should be Mentalists and Bards Essence (as noted in the infamous 'Amthorian view' in early RM2 editions. Anyone know what's happening there?
As far as I know (unless they've added more), there are currently two printers, one in the US and one in the UK.
I'll be sure to pick one up; I'm curious to see if the PoD books are as good as the larger ones. Are you likely to be picking up an ISBN for the book?
That sounds great - faster shipping and inside EU no customs!
I think it looks pretty nice; seems to be the same process as with a large size softcover book with B&W interior. I wasn't planning on bothering with an ISBN.
I love those types of maps.

Will there be coffee stamps in TOC in limited edition books? "Now fist 100 with authentic coffee stamps"... ;D
I prefer sourcebooks - however one quest now and then is nice change. Ratio 1/4 or something...
Just got my Loremaster Legacy and SW players guide premium edition. I must admit that PG is pretty and worth the few extra bucks.
I would assume "PG" means Players Guide rather than Parental Guidance in this case. ;)
this will be much more of a general sourcebook with some adventures, and less of a big quest book like Xa-ar was. Comments/opinions?
Rewatching Desolation of Smaug in prep for Five Armies, and thinking how dark and grim these Hobbit movies have been. Still, looking at Laketown, and thinking that early Sel-kai could have looked very much like that.
I was also surprised at the take off of the new D&D. A friend of mine who keeps a close watch on such things was impressed at how many physical books were sold after giving away the PDF for free.
But I also believe they had to do something a little different after 4th edition and the surge of Pathfinder and other 3rd edition offshoots.
All in all I think it is very healthy for the hobby and games (board/card/other) in general.

Gee, maybe we should try to finish that OGL Shadow World Atlas after all...As someone who likes and is playing* D&D 5E, please don't. First, it is not OGL/D20, not at all, so they won't be compatable and second, while I am sure there are D20/OGL hold-outs (like there are RM2 hold-outs), I don't think this would generate any serious response by the D20 community. Of course, I could be wrong about that, but I don't think so. And, a totally unrelated reason, I think it would be down-right criminal to sully SW with the OGL - but that is totally unrelated, of course. (OK, to be perfectly fair, it might generate new traffic to SW, and perhaps even RM, just not sure how much.)

*This after being sure I would not play/like D&D again because of 3rd and 4th editions, especially 4th edition. Of course, as an RM lover, there are still things about it that I would like to change and would do differently in any 5E game I ran...
It could bring new traffic, both to Shadow World and to Rolemaster. Settings are often popular, and if people play in it, they may decide to give this Rolemaster thing it's linked to a shot too.Yeah, I know. I just don't want them to use up their already stretched-to-thin resourses for a D20/OGL project; I am being selfish, I know...

Well, it apparently really just needs formatting and laying out. So, if someone from D20 did that, it wouldn't scavenge valuable RM/SW resources.
I don't know whether it would make much of a difference regarding sales or anything, but has a HARP version of the atlas been considered?
A HARP Handbook for Shadow World is on the List of products that I would be happy to see written.
Best wishes,

Actually, for the SW Atlas OGL, we would need someone who does Adobe InDesign layout (preferably Mac), per page fee, and frankly, fairly inexpensively. And I am just speaking hypothetically; I have no power to commission it.
I just realized that I guess I am the last of the original ICE founders still involved with the latest incarnation of the company. :-\

Always sad when a Fellowship breaks up, isn't it? :-\
I hope you are still in touch with your old pals.
So, which SW project are you moving off to once Eidolon and Gryphon Inn are finished?
I'm well along in the NE Jaiman book (looking bigger than Xa-ar, and more of a 'sourcebook'), and we have commissioned a new more detialed map.Yay!!!! Bigger, better maps!!! Yippie!!
From the studies I have heard about and read most developed countries have it better than the US in terms of speed and some undeveloped countries that have new installations also have great service.
But in general in the US, internet service speeds can differ vastly depending on region, location and wealth of such places.

While sadly another printing of the 20 x28 poster map of the city is not practical, back when I had access to a large-format scanner, I scanned my copy of the city map and stitched it in PS to one large PDF, that is high-enough quality to be printed (most local printers and Fedex Office places can even do this now). I also windowed the map in sections in the (full-color) book at a couple of different scales, so it is easily at your fingertips.
<...>
Hey Terry, just clarify your comment about the Eidolon map: is the original printing compatible with the revised sourcebook you are working on? I imagine the city layout will be the same, but am wondering if the map key will change to take into account any new locations you may have added or older ones that could have been removed. I have the original and it would be great to continue to be able to use it without having to print a new one.

But maybe you can add the map to the PDF Version of the book. Then everybody can decide by himself to print it at a copy shop.
The new edition of Eidolon will be at the editor's by the end of the week.
The only incomplete art is a few adventure layouts that I will be doing while the text is edited. All the outside art is done.
And I'm writing... Eidolon now stands at 254 pages! I am tweaking the last two adventures and associated NPCs. Naturally the adventures got longer in the writing...
Now if we could also just get Green Gryphon out the door...

I ask because if it is very soon, then it would be great to be able to save on shipping by getting it and Gryphonburg on the same order.

Okay, I managed to find it on the newest list - for March 28th, not April 1st. At a guess, setting a scheduled release for a supplement results in the site using the date it's scheduled as the date it's released - an argument against using scheduled releases if true.
Both Wuliris and Lost Tech would be high on my list.
I think there are a lot of older, less canon things to bring up to snuff then Emer II....
Green Gryphon was :worthy:
With Green Gryphon complete and the Eidolon revision not far off it, what's probably going to be the next supplement to be completed?

Out of curiosity, just how far along is Artefacts? I had been assuming that it wasn't really started, but it sounds like more work may have been done on it than I thought.
I was just looking through the Atlas Addendum; there's a significant amount of content in it related to artefacts and tech.

Yes 20pp or so, but I would not use it all. For instance the Narselkin are in Tanara.
For now, there are a lot of SW creatures, demons, and races still available in PDF format in the atlases 3rd and 4th edition. I could see a 'Creatures & Peoples of Shadow World' at some point, but not high on my personal agenda.

I suppose that someone else could start collating all the information from the various sources.
I imagine it would be awhile before RMU is ready enough to have the stats included, although it would make sense to wait until it is before releasing such a supplement. Although I expect that it would also need stats for the other systems too.
And Green Gryphon has now gone Silver on RPGNow.

There was a joke in the industry about ICE in the late 80's and early 90's: "If ICE was getting into a genre, it is officially dead."
Might be worth selling them on to eBay?
RM 2nd Ed sell for a decent amount there and others get the opportunity to pick up the books - they are fairly rare on eBay especially international delivery...
Terry, I was thinking about Loremaster Legacy this morning, how is the next instalment of Loremaster Legacy going? Have any words made it from your imagination to screen yet?

There's a brief one on this page: http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/classic/rev_4391.phtml
I nearly wrote one recently, but I knew the revised edition was coming out, so decided to wait.
… what really sets Terry Amthor's books apart is the fact that they are so much fun to read. They don't read like a dry sourcebook at all. The texts are so full of details, history and background, you just can't put it away until you've read it all through.

I was trying to highlight the point that yours are enjoyable to read; many are not.
On a somewhat personal note, there have been some positive changes in my situation (aside from my still-in-progress plans to move back to the home of ICE, Charlottesville, in the next few months). A little stability is a good thing.
Because of this, in addition to the already mentioned SW projects, I hope to resume writing on my Loremaster novel series (for my own amusement if nothing else), and I need to check in on the Space Master revision situation...

That is this afternoon sorted, what are you doing tomorrow?
I was implying you could surely write and edit four books in an afternoon and then get on with something else the following day but if you are driving then it wouldn't be safe to drive and type at the same time.
BTW,
One way to get around the typing if you have a long commute.
There are some authors that write by speaking into recorders in there care and having their assistants typing up there notes for later editing.

I hadn't noticed HARP SF had gone electrum. Strange; I thought I had checked that - I know I was looking at Martial Law and College of Magics, and I think SF Extreme.
I think another reason why Xa-ar is overdue is it was first available on ironcrown.com. I bought it there - which is why it isn't showing up in my products on RPGNow, along with a few other things - and, because I printed it out, I haven't as yet purchased it in PoD.
Such a shame that RPGNow's PoD poster size isn't as big as the Sel-kai map.
RPGNow's print on demand posters only go up to 18"x12" in size. It would have been nice to have a full size PoD map, but if one was done, the image would have to be smaller than the Sel-kai map is.
Sounds like your eyesight is similar to mine. In school my glasses were at least twice as thick as my current ones; probably close to four times as thick as they were before I had to get varifocals, as that meant I had to get bigger lenses.
Yes progressive lenses are great as well as feather light lenses and something I like to call disappearing frames.

Nice to see you settle back home in Lorien. I hope this will spur more trips down memory lane (like the one you shared re the birth of mentalism, I enjoyed reading that). I hope to see Wuliris and Emer IV out next. I much prefer new original material to re-writes. However, as I own everything done in Shadow World, I will still probably end up buying Eidolon (at some weak moment, lol). As starfit, I also hope that Kaitaine will get special attention. I see that place as very multicultural (with multiple races from various continents) and a rich setting for interesting adventure.
Good morning!
As I was rather late to the game, I don't have either of the original Emer volumes, and as they're both OOP getting them is challenging. While I'm all for new content, making the older stuff (that's necessary and ties into what's new/available now) available again is significant for those of us who don't already HAVE a complete collection.
I waited for probably 10 years to get a copy of Eidolon, so I can wait a little longer for Emer I and II to be re-released.
Rochndil, still reading through Eidolon...
And Eidolon has gone Silver on RPGNow in just under a month!
Every time I try to get the Eidolon page on RPGNow, I get an error. What's up with that?

Excellent - so the images didn't bleed too much into the paper this time? Or was the Hardcover printed on the premium paper?
Just noticed that Xa-ar has gone Electrum.
Just noticed that Xa-ar has gone Electrum.
Yay! It actually would have a long time ago, but it was originally released in Drive-thru, then moved to RPGNow, and it had to get a certain number in RPGNow... it's complicated.

It also was released on the old store, guild.ironcrown.com, which was where I purchased it. So that's a sale that never counted for metal, and I also printed it out, so haven't bought it PoD yet either.
I wonder what's likely to go Gold? Player Guide has been Electrum the longest, but some of the newer ones might sell faster. Like Green Gryphon, which can be easily modified to any campaign setting.
Heck, Green Gryphon could be marketed to the wider D&D crowd, especially OSR, never mind Rolemaster. All you probably need is the conversion notes that used to be in the old modules I reckon. Might be worth writing them up again somewhere, maybe as a free download.
It's been a weirdly warm fall here in VA.Here in east Tennessee, too. Couple of cold days, then back to the 60s.
I had the terrible urge to work on Emer IV yesterday... and it is continuing on into today.Don't resist.

Maybe it's my vision. I have one really dominant eye (not to mention bad astigmatism and really bad near and far-sightedness). I am just getting used to my 'progressive' glasses. Getting old sucks.

I always say that getting old is better than the alternative. It's the ageing part that really sucks.
I couldn't really get a higher resolution monitor without getting an absolutely huge one (say, 50"+); my current two are at about the limit where I can comfortably read the writing.
Didn't the Master Atlas 4 have both RMC & RMFRP stats for all the races?
The Player's Guide was a general overview of Kulthea (the Western Hemisphere anyway), there were going to be more detailed books for each continent...
Mr. Amthor,
Can you tell us what the next publication will be? When do you anticipate its release?
Thanks,
--Desty
FINALLY got it worked out with the printer about the Eidolon softcover, so should be seeing a proof any day, and available soon after!
Been rolling on Emer IV the last few days... I really should finish one project before starting a new one. I have too many balls in the air.Strange, that sounds familiar... ;-)
Working more on SW Emer: some races that have not been fully explored before beyond a paragraph in the Atlas. Not to mention the Warlocks of Itanis, Kaitaine, the City of the Dead, and more. I had forgotten how much there was here. Any thoughts, suggestions on what you want to see in Emer IV?

Looking forward to this (as well as the NE Jaiman stuff).
Aside from the obvious stuff (Kaitaine, Rhiani, Vajaar, Itanis, Lys, City of Dead), the ONE thing I really want to see more explored is the Alliance. The Alliance is at the doorstep to Emer, and Uj is that doorstep. So I think a more in-depth understanding of The Alliance and their ambitions and plans for Emer is warranted (or much desired at the very least).
Did Kaitaine cave in to The Alliance demands as suggested 8 years ago? http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=5768.msg76380#msg76380

What does it mean to be a subject state of The Alliance?
How does the Ahrenreth react to The Alliance expansion to Emer (and their possibly conflicting goals of world domination)?
I'm a sucker for the intrigue and politics, both on a world and regional level and I see The Alliance as something that plays a major role in this. I would also like to see how the Ahrenreth operates in this part of the world. It's an area that is not so directly 'controlled' by them as Ardania/SW Emer is. What other agents of Unlife are there in the region (aside from the White Wood)? Are there any organized cults (similar to the Priests Arnak)?
Other potential ideas for further development/exploration:
- The migration routes of the 12 Rhiani tribes
- The sacred ruins and surrounding tent city of Shezarak
- Caves of the Charn Raiders
- The Vajaari-Komarean war
- The secrets of the City of the Dead (something I think everyone has eagerly awaited since the publication of the original Emer boxed set)
- Life in terraces of Lys and sibling squabbles (referring to the princes of Lys, sorry, from an earlier adventure of mine...)
- The Murlogi realm under the mountains of the Morbek highlands (or will this fall under Emer I)?
- Life in the streets of Kaitaine and the politics behind it

Looks awesome! I already want to send my PC's there to explore ;D
They just came in today and they look great! I can't wait to delve deeper, though I already know I love the fact that you have both images and deck plans for some ships; those really come in handy.
Is that image upside down?
Nice tank. Fake plants are good for a start, but real ones work better in the long run.
I prefer fake crocodiles to real ones. But probably not for steaks or for shoes.

I know nothing about fish tanks and such but surely real plants work better than fake plant all the time and in pretty much every situation?
I cannot think of a situation where I would rather have a fake item over a real one. Parachutes, aqualungs, rations, orgasms; nope real ones seem better to me all round.
:)
Heh, well thanks for all your comments, but after a sleepless night of worrying about a 20-gallon tank springing a leak in my home office (not to mention that I live on a second-floor condo), I abandoned the project and drained the tank. Now it's going to be a terrarium or maybe a home for a small rodent. :-[We had gerbils, hamsters and rats in the past and, unless you are a pretty heavy sleeper, I found their nocturnal life cycle disturbing.

Hi TKA!
Just out of curiosity, do you edit/update your books from what fans here on forum "want" or what you feel like writing about?
Ps. I my self am 100% Jaiman person!
Do what I do - work on everything. Okay, it's not the most productive way to work on lots of different projects during the same day, but at least you get something achieved, until you can decide on, or come up with the inspiration for, a project to devote the most time to.
I'm still not sure that Jaiman really needs a master sourcebook, given how many regional supplements are either done or in progress. Xa-ar, Cloudlords, revised Norek, revised Haalkitaine, Wulriis. Perhaps simply a Players or GMs guide, with the old Jaiman adventures expanded and given their own book.

There has been talk of a Player's Guide and a GM's Guide to Jaiman, which I think would be great, but I'd rather hand those off.
In my SW campaign, the Alliance tried to stage a coup in Kaitaine with Jenaar and Kal-Chah strike squads (as they did in 5028-29 to the Shoneb Empire) in TE 6065 (or so), but were foiled by the PCs.
I can't remember if this was mentioned in the past, but what's the Shadow World adventure in GA4 about?
That should be good. Do you have any other small adventures in progress that would also link to the more recently published supplements? (And do you know if there's a GA5 in progress?)
As for GA5, that is Nicholas' department. :)
Say, what's the likelihood of collecting all the Shadow World from TGA into a supplement and publishing it as a hardback/softback book?
Have you thought of doing a Shadow World gamebook, like A Spy in Isengard (which is, rather oddly, available on archive.org - I don't know what the copyright status of that book is, but I doubt it's public domain)? I've been looking into them recently, and they still seem to be quite popular, as they are well suited to ebooks and there are even some apps, such as those based around the British Steve Jackson's Sorcery! ones.
Is Shade moderately close to being ready then? And is it based on the old Loremaster module, Shade of the Sinking Plain?

Green Gryphon is Copper on DriveThruRPG. I wonder when that happened.

Cool; I only usually follow RPGNow (which has been weird lately; the top Guild Companion sellers seem to keep jumping around). I think the sales numbers for DriveThru are much higher for medals than RPGNow. I've been waiting to see which goes Electrum first on RPGNow, Eidolon or Gryphon.

The number of sales required for DriveThru are the same for RPGNow. However our links all point to RPGNow in marketing (for historical reasons, namely that we started on RPGNow before the creation of OBS) and for the practical reason that a link can only go to one place.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

Yes, they have kept mucking up on RPGNow, haven't they? I guess there were database problems. I'm possibly expecting Green Gryphon to go Electrum first (it's older, cheaper and can be used anywhere). There's a heck of a lot more competition on DriveThru than RPGNow, and all of GCP's links post to RPGNow.
EDIT: Ah, I see Nicholas already mentioned the last. Most companies' links tend to post to DriveThru (which is why there's more 'competition'; there aren't any more products on the site); I think people pick one or the other to focus on. It's better to get a metal on one site I think, than not get it on two.
I had thought it would have by now. It might be one of those slow and steady supplements. Two of the others are Silver, one Electrum, so the long-term sales look promising. I also don't know how many were bought through DriveThruRPG - the sales may be diluted.
It may have suffered from the long (but unavoidable) delay in release.
Meanwhile, I really want to get another SW product out soon, but my attention is scattered across several projects, including NE Jaiman and SW Emer...
I wouldn't mind a game in SW, but the UK time differential would be a problem as well.It may have suffered from the long (but unavoidable) delay in release.
I think it's also the type of supplement that people buy when they need, rather than immediately after its release.QuoteMeanwhile, I really want to get another SW product out soon, but my attention is scattered across several projects, including NE Jaiman and SW Emer...
I hear advances have been made in cloning :)
It would be nice if at some point all the SW adventures from the Guild Adventurer were compiled into a print on demand book. Perhaps not a PDF, just a book. I have seen a few publishers do this. It would probably need at least a couple more adventures first though.
Nicholas and I have discussed compiling the GA's into a book, but many of the layouts are very low-rez. I don't think we talked about a book of just SW adventures. They are all rather long and (unlike some of the other GA adventures) I think the graphics are all good enough for print.
I never heard of this beautiful Chinese city. It would be great as a major town in Nuyan KhomThat place is like right out of the best kung-fu movies!! It is awesome.

I played in an online demo for Fantasy Grounds a few years ago, and I thought I behaved ok. ;-) I'd never played in an online interactive game where you were connected live and could speak to the other players and the GM. I loved it!
Actually one of the other players was surprised how I got into playing my female (rogue?) character. Most of the other guys were from the UK, and maybe a little more restrained but I like to really role-play my character. It was fun.
And as far as being intimidating: I certainly would never second-guess or criticize the GM! SW is what you make it. I respect anyone who makes the effort to be a GM. It is a lot of work.

I think you can take it as a compliment that I used the pair Kevin/Tolkien in a sentence. If I ever GM for you it would have be with you using an assumed name and possibly a false moustache.
What seems to be the problem with the maps?

I'm not sure about skype. I don't want my camera on. Call me paranoid.
Here's one of Emer I's maps by comparison. I don't think they're bad really, although I would like to see consistency across all four atlases.
Going back to Emer I and paging through it. More already done than I remembered. Map issue resolved. Hope to have it ready to submit in a few weeks! I'd like to have I and II out again before finishing IV.

Good to hear. So does the revision of Emer I look promising for release next year then?
Or confident. Confident sounds better.
What stage is Lethys at?; I don't recall seeing that one mentioned in a while.

It's moving slowly. While the content is great, it basically requires a grammatical rewrite.

That went from nearly complete to published pretty quickly!
I really wasn't expecting Haalkitaine this year, even with you saying that it didn't need as much work as expected.
I know I ask this periodically, but I thought I'd ask again, since I seem to be in a manic writing mode: What would you most like to see as the next few SW books?
I would like the next part of the Loremaster Legacy novel. It is a great tool to get a real feeling of an adventure in Shadow World as it unfolds.I second this suggestion!
I'm glad to hear of some enthusiasm about the novel sequel, but sales were not up to my hopes :-( I have it partly written...

I get the impression that ebook success requires more than just writing a good book. It seems to need marketing as well. Just don't ask me what :) Perhaps reviews on book blogs, maybe promotions. Perhaps it needs listing on RPGNow and DriveThruRPG as well; I know they require fiction to be connected to gaming or something, but it is to a degree. Or maybe an audio book (although that is likely expensive).
I'm currently wallowing in a deep depression. The United States is apparently run by orange-faced racists and misogynists. It is going to take me a little while to recover. Or, anyone want to take me in? ;-)
I'm waiting for Elon Musk to hurry up and build a colony on Mars.
If you figure out a good place to go, please let the rest of us know....Iceland or Costa Rica are the places to be.
As for SW material, I would love to see either a thorough treatment of the Alliance (we know relatively little about their current empire) or (as B Hansen mentioned) a book on Gaalt detailing the conflict between the Raven Queen and her opposition.
I think Costa Rica has less volcanoes than Iceland. I don't like volcanoes.
I have been up a couple of volcanoes and they are pretty cool.

I still need Xa-ar in pod; I'd already printed it out myself before it was available like that. I'd also like Green Gryphon in hardback. Because I like them (I already have the softback; the hardback wasn't available).

In other news, GA4 has gone copper on RPGNow.
That sounds fantastic. I can't wait. (Well, I can, it's gonna suck, but there you go. *insert silly google-eyed emoji here*)
PS: I still cannot use any of the emojis or other graphic controls.
Hah I wish this site had a way where you could just 'like' a post as in FB.There are somethings this site has that I wish RPG.NET had, and vice-versa. (Though that is when I can get those parts on this site working, which I can't since I got Windows 10. Man I hate Windows 10, but just cannot afford to switch to mac.... *sad-faced emoji*)

I find it's harder to proof your own stuff - you tend to read what you know it's supposed to say, not necessarily what it actually does.
Harp Folkways (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/206638/HARP-Folkways?src=hottest_filtered?affiliate_id=181921) is now available!
There is a lot of interesting system-neutral information, and a section detailing 2 Shadow world cultures.
TKA, can you tell me which two SW cultures are in it?
thanks
Well it is obviously the superior system :P
Was so glad to see Emer III leap up to electrum, tho sad that Eidolon and Gryphon have not yet. Wonder why? Anyway, after these revisions soon, will be Emer IV and hope it does as well! Then I will finish new editions of I and II and Emer will be complete, and I can move on.
And Green Gryphon has gone Electrum!
HARP Loot is Copper now. Pretty sure it wasn't before.
Folkways went Copper quite quickly, much faster than Loot despite being released later. Perhaps because I really don't class it as a HARP book; so much of it is pretty system neutral.
I would guess that Eidolon may hit Electrum before Cloudlords. I do wonder how far off Gold the Player's Guide is.
Well it is obviously the superior system :P
Well I would agree, but I did help create it! ;-)
Ah yes, I forgot that Loot was just a new edition. So some will still be using their old book I guess.
It doesn't really help that ranking is calculated on each of OBS's sites individually, and you can get sales from sites products aren't actually listed on.
OBS running separate counts per site is indeed an annoyance. More products would be higher ranked.
OBS running separate counts per site is indeed an annoyance. More products would be higher ranked.
What's even more annoying is when you get sales from sites that not only is a product not listed on but is also one you can't actually get sales figures for. Such as DM's Guild, the previous D&D site and Flames Rising.
Artefacts & Lost Tech! :D
Anyone know how to log in to the ICE blog to leave comments? My Forum login/PW don't work and there doesn't seem to be a place in the blog section to actually set up a login/PW. ???
Oh yes... that! I have all the old material in updated WORD files, but it's been on kind of the back burner. A lot of Taranian tech will come out in NE Jaiman, and I've covered a lot of Jinteni tech in Emer III (and in IV). Not sure where to go with Artefacts. :-\

See screencap. Look at the bottom. Clinking that link takes you to a Wordpress page asking for your login or email and a PW.
Ah, it could be registration to post comments is closed. I certainly don't recall ever seeing any. The blog's admin would probably have to add people who want to comment.
Sorry I'm so late to the party on this. I am indeed the one that manages the blog.
Comments were turned off because I was spending 5 minutes a day deleting spam and the number of genuine comments was incredibly small/non-existent.
I hadn't noticed that it still said that you could comment if you signed in. I'll look into how to get rid of that.
Thanks for flagging it and sorry for the confusion.
Interesting that all of the main Rolemaster Classic books have gone electrum. Shows a lot of ongoing support for the original system we created.
I came up with a list, but it was basically everything. With decent reasons for them all as well.
I came up with a list, but it was basically everything. With decent reasons for them all as well.
Here's a short list in no particular order (you've seen it before):
• Haalkitaine 2nd Edition
• Emer I 2nd Edition
• Emer II 2nd Edition
• Emer IV (NEW)
• Edit submitted Lethys
• Edit submitted Agyra Book
• Artifacts (may only edit this)
I'm also toying with the idea of writing a 'small' adventure book centered around one shop (or maybe a cluster of shops) in Sel-kai, going into incredible detail about the layout of the place, with wares, secret cubbies, etc., and the profiles of the resident-owners. I think it would be fun.

Is your work with Jaiman making it easier to work with Haalkitaine and Lethys?
I do ofcourse want you to finish that one I wrote some 20 years ago ;)

Actually I was working on the Haalkitaine revision and felt compelled to re-do Jaiman. It all gets tangled in my brain sometimes. You're the author of the Lethys module? Or are you talking about something else?
Where is the Lethys book sold?
Where is the Lethys book sold?
Its not sold anywhere, the basic work has been out here since 15 years atleast, rewritten a couple of years ago for Terry to edit before publication.
OMG they got the ICE site back.
Hmm? What does this mean? Got the ICE site back...? Help us ignorant souls understand the import of your words... :o
When is Jaiman rev hitting the stores?

Just to clarify, this is a six-page FREE PDF download with backgrounds on the quartet we have been seeing in recent Shadow World book illustrations. It also gives hints about their quest, and complete Rolemaster stats for all (RM2/Classic for now; RMSS to be added soon). Please review! If there is interest this could be expanded into a quest/campaign module that some have requested.

About 200 people have downloaded the Shadow World 'Travellers' flier. I know it was just a six-page teaser, but I wanted to get a small thing out. Jaiman is back to me from my esteemed editor with minor tweaks, so just waiting on RMSS stats and a few final art items.
Haalkitaine is to follow with lots of new art (including from an old SW artist who has come a long way in his talent) and the promised sewers and catacombs and adventures. And then a final Emer tour.

Hi Terry, what's your latest on rough target dates for new/revised Shadow World content release that you're currently working on?
We are currently waiting on art and RMSS stats for the Jaiman sourcebook, otherwise besides very minor edits, it is ready to go.
The Haalkitaine revision also is awaiting stats, art, and final adventures and drawing the catacombs from me. I hope to have it done by GenCon.
Next is Emer IV; which is largely written but needs art and layouts. Hopefully 2018!
In other news, Shadow World Player Guide - The World is now Gold on RPGNow.
I already have big dreams for GenCon:
A Shadow World tournament, rescuing the Northern Eye?
Shadow World Rolemaster adventures
A Space Master Adventure in Shadow World. Dia Khovaria?
And maybe prizes, like a flash drive containing SW or Rolemaster PDFS? A signed copy of my novel?
What do you all think?
I wasn't planning on attending, but now I'm tempted...
Would you be interested in doing a discussion/chat about the Shadow World, covering such things like your vision (even if vague) about some of the undefined continents, the timeline you envision for the future of SW, etc?
I'd certainly play in any RM/SW adventures.
Hmm, guess I need to look at the GenCon page and see what the current state of registration and hotels is....
Where on Jaiman would this village be?

I think I am (perhaps ironically, since I am mainly a writer) a very visual person, and before going much further than outlining the text and pulling the old source material from the original 'Emer' book, I had to get a map set up and mark all the known locations. Then all the ideas for filling in the gaps begin. And Kaitaine is going to need a whole new big city map of course. In edition to the redo, Make a very detailed google map, with street view VR of different locales I bet you could do a kickstarter to fund it, and it will be a hit!

I find the labels on the Forgotten Realms map to be too heavy-handed; they blot out too much of the actual map.
I can't believe I've been on this board for years and I've never stumbled into this thread. GODS! I want to pull my hair out.
1) I think the villagers of the Safety Dance ilk are located just south and perhaps a little east of Gryphonburg. They seem like the happy-go-lucky sort of folk that inhabit that area. :D
2a) I'm in the US, so no chance of me attending the same Gen Con as Terry :(
2b) Signed book from Terry. Yes please!
3a) Haalkitaine book is top of my wish list!
3b) Autographed copy of Haalkitaine is even higher on my wish list... right next to the faux-leather, hardcover copy of RM2.
4) I'm definitely interested in a Shadow World discussion group/thread. I've started to inject more and more SW elements into the world we've been using for decades. I've moved the cities we've used to match coastlines on the various continents on the master atlas. It was easy enough to do given the vast locales and that no one ever had a master atlas for the world we imagined. The players are none the wiser. They just think they've been playing there all along
I would be happy to autograph any of my works, but sadly the logistics would be difficult unless you or someone could be at GenCon. When you order a book, it goes directly from the printer to you; I never see it. Long gone are the times of warehouses of books that I could go and sign.

Such is the price of celebrity. The difference here is that Terry actively participates in the community of his fan base. He seems a lot more down to earth then those individuals who grace the glossy covers of super-market magazines. And I thank him for that!

Hah hah! But I have enjoyed meeting a few actual celebrities over the years. Garrett Wang and Robbie McNeill from ST Voyager, George Takei and Majel Barrett from ST. And Don S. Davis from Stargate SG-1 and Twin Peaks. Mr. Davis and I even spoke briefly about him working for David Lynch; he said it was an amazing experience; he was headed to a Twin Peaks reunion right after the con where I met him. He was very sweet and gracious. Actually, all of them were.

Curious if there will be hard cover print version of the Master Atlas 4ed. on RPG Now?

I used only RM2, and am now using RMU, so we skipped RMSS/FRP altogether, and I wouldn't need it.
I don't want to start an edition war; I just want to answer your question. I love all my RMSS brothers and sisters... and even some of the FRP folks too :)

the new Emer IV. It's going to be almost as weighty as Emer III!

Doing the final pass on Jaiman while awaiting a few last illos from Craig. I must admit I will be glad to see this out the door and move on to Haalkitaine, Emer IV, NE Jaiman, and revisions of Emer I and II.

YESSS!!! Haalkitaine!
I've been wanting that material for so long. Sign me up. Here's my credit card number.
I just looked on E-Bay for Haalkitaine. I found a used version for $175 USD.
I may need to take out a personal loan to buy the new edition!
Is it gonna be streamed?

Please wait. The new edition will have a reasonable price and much more material.
BTW, I see one 'new' on Amazon for $594! Oh gosh.
I'd second The Grand Campaign on that list. Again, I know it's a long shot… but that document has tantalized me since the first time I saw Part I in Grey Worlds back in the day…

And I do kind of get why it will never happen. There is so much left to document about just the Western Hemisphere, and the Eastern Hemisphere is still completely undocumented.
I would like to know more about the East too. Given recent events it seems like it's time to learn more about it. I don't want to give any spoilers, consequently I am being pretty vague here, but a GM has a number of options now with regards to the east, and it's potentially a campaign setting depending on how things play out in a game.
i think the east should be left as "the great white spot" as it is,
for GMs to explore an develop with their own imagination.
We don't know enough about the First age to even begin to create a setting in the east imo.
In the lore, if I remember correctly, didn't the gold dragon go off to investigate the EAST?
In the lore, if I remember correctly, didn't the gold dragon go off to investigate the EAST?
That is what the other dragons suspect. There was a conversation to that effect in Loremaster Legacy during a meeting of the Dragonlords.
While it is small there is a map of the east here: http://www.eidolonstudio.com/Shadow_World/Maps.html
Any prediction for non-TKA stuff and editing?
As GenCon approaches, I apologize again for not attending. Even though I had already done a lot of preparation, I was kind of dreading the trip. I do not have the mental or physical constitution for such an arduous trip. Even back in the olden days when I was young a physically fit, I went to GenCon (which was much smaller in Milwaukee, and the con was across the street from the hotel) with a team—the ICE staff—through the journey. We flew a wonderful airline before 9/11.
This time I felt like I would be largely on my own, on a crappy flight and long treks to the con.
I personally love the encounter tables. I also can't wait for Emer IV!
Sorry to hear about your health, but if you do decide to go to Gencon in the future, I know there would be many people happy to help you out in any way you need. I couldn't make it this year due to my family, but next year I am planning to go, and my group includes several people who have played RM since 1st edition; all of us would be absolutely delighted to be your chauffeurs.
Overall GenCon was enormous; I got on line for Will Call at 10:30 on Thursday morning and it took 1:40 to get my badge and tickets. The mini events were held on the floor of Lucas Oil Stadium (the Colts' stadium), which was a good 15 min walk away from the rest of the events. However, the areas reserved for RPGs in the adjoining hotels were reasonable intimate and accessible. The dealer room was insanely huge, but pretty much everyone in the industry was there.
Going through Haalkitaine now. It's been 20 years :o so I am having to re-familiarize myself with a lot of it. The new edition will have sewers maps, catacombs and adventures! (The first edition had none of those; and people were very disappointed that there were no sewer maps)

While I would like to see the next book, what I don't like about the idea of selling the chapters is that you can start reading something that never gets finished.
While I would like to see the next book, what I don't like about the idea of selling the chapters is that you can start reading something that never gets finished.
But having read the first book of a series means it is already an unfinished tale. Every installment makes it one step closer to completion at best or simply longer at the very worst.
Although I have played is SW I had never visualised the world until I had read the loremaster legacy.
and partly because that conversion to all the ebook formats was a PIA.

Stay safe in the storm. I'm from back east originally and I kind of miss hurricanes. Out here the weather is boring, we haven't had a lightning storm in maybe 10 or 12 years, but every so often the ground decides to getup and walk around for a bit. Trade you :D

This looks like a very serious storm. And BTW, back in 2011 (?) we actually had a 6.x earthquake here in VA. Scared the crap of of me, and damaged the Washington Monument!

Although I would prefer a book, I would prefer anything than nothing ;D
You guys got me inspired. I opened the book 2 Word file and lots there; several chapters. I am thinking I may just post it as RPG Fiction pay as you want and go as I can write it. What do you think? First one will be very large and I'd hope you are generous and spread the word.
Anyone else watching 'The Dragon Prince' on Netlfix? I just started. Elves (who know parkour) and humans, realms of magic, dragons.
I'm only up to ep 4, kind of rationing it. The animation style reminds me of Last Airbender (and one of the producers/creator is from that show). They say they are going to improve the animation for season 2. It's aimed at kids, but has some cool Shadow-worldy ideas.
Did you notice all of the quotes being used in the Dragon Prince in first episode i heard the Taken line, ill find you and ill kill you and say hello to my little friend in another episode :)Yup, noticed all the movie/TV/pop-culture quotes, thought they were pretty-funny and well done. I am up to ep 5 and pretty happy with it so far, the humor is its saving grace for me, as the art is OK, until they go "close-up" on someone, then not so much.
Also.. I dont like moon elfs speaking with scottish accent. Mostly because in WoW dwarfes speak with scottish accent :)

I actually like the Scottish accent for the elves, it is like the creators are saying, "this isn't just for dwarves you know?!?!" It does take a little getting used to...
Interesting.
Is this show closer to Game of Thrones/Robotech/Star Blazers/Aeon Flux (you know where characters actually die and bad things happen and the villains win (sometimes at least)? or is it more Disney/Gi Joe?

Ahhh Star Blazers. I have Season 1 and Season 2 on VHS! I didn't bother with Season 3 since it was so poorly done. I miss Force Five. If I could find those on DVD, I'd be really happy!

Jaiman is Copper already on RPGNow.
Great. So, I've held off on buying the .pdf because I don't want to have to buy the same thing twice (once for the .pdf, once for the hard copy). Will there be an option to buy both at once?
Yes.

My poll answer is "none of the above." I use the pdf in order to read it on my iPad. I like having my entire RPG library wherever I am. I also use an app called Liquid Text which gives me an overlay on the write protected PDF allowing me to mark it up, highlight, and make notes in the margins. I could do that on a hardcopy, but I hate the idea of marking up books.
I also always buy a hardcover copy, because my Rolemaster library is the pride of my book collection.
Statting Haalkitaine NPCs... they are going on FOREVER! :o
I better take a break and do the final Jaiman PDF. Do you want the RMSS stats pages rotated? Hopefully we will get the RMSS conversion guy to go back to the previous format so I don't have to do those pages sideways. Urgh.

In general rotated pages are a pain in the arse. I have most of my rules at the gaming table on a tablet pc so when I rotate it the screen helpfully rotates back again until I remember to lock the screen.
Ugh, dragging through more NPC stats. Haalkitaine is up to 216 pages. Lots more material, including adventures, tombs and catacombs.
Need more coffee... :'(
Eagerly awaiting proof print copies of Jaiman! ;D
Awesome! I just ordered the hardcover! Any chance of getting autographed copies? :DI'd be happy to, but that would involve sending a copy to me to sign, them me forwarding it to you. Maybe I could just autograph a paper you can tip in?
Can't wait for Haalkitaine !

Nicholas in the UK) got his much sooner than I (in the US) did, but I did get mine in time to approve and get a few copies to Dragonmeet. As soon as Nicholas and I both approved, he put it up on RPGNow, so you should be getting it any day.
Hah hah! No I have only visited the UK a few times. I am living in Charlottesville, VA, home of the University of Virginia, and the birth-place of ICE back in 1980.Still waiting for my copy to get here. Holiday mail delivery slows down quite a bit. :(

Wait... you're in the US? I thought you were in the UK! Heck, I'm sending all of my copies to you for autographs in a big bulk shipment!
Hah hah! No I have only visited the UK a few times. I am living in Charlottesville, VA, home of the University of Virginia, and the birth-place of ICE back in 1980.
Anyway, there was one book (Powers, not laid out by me), which had those elaborate graphics on every page, that bled out on the top, bottom, and outside. They just repeated on every page, and I thought they were pointless. They were just glorified page number graphics. It was a trendy thing at the time.
I printed out Powers and SWMA4. Boy, did those use a lot of ink. I've since become a big fan of layered PDFs, where you can stop some layers from printing.
Today my copy of Jaiman arrived and ... well... not sure how to put it: It surpassed my expectations in every single aspect! Volume, detail, reference, color, plot hooks. You name it! I pulled my copies of the new Emer books off the shelf for some comparison and I am inclined to say that to me, this is the best Shadow World book to be released in the new series, period.
I can see that assembling this tome of information (CODEX is more fitting) must have been a long, arduous and painstakingly intense research and writing experience.
Chapeaux, good sir, to a work outstandingly done!
• Probably others I cannot recall now...
Awesome. Why you up so early? (Insert big grin emoji here: I still cannot use them.)
The completion of Haalkitaine is in sight!
It is fascinating to me that the PDFs of the Rolemaster Classic (RM2?) remain top sellers on RPGNow after all these years.

I like books during play, but PDFs are super convenient with the search function and bookmarking.
Like many older players, I've got most of the original soft-cover books and modules (at least pre-95). However, I don't like to use them much (as others have noted) due to fragility. The PDF's are nice, even if they are only scanned, as they travel easy, and are searchable. I even print a few and use my coil binding machine to bind them up, giving me the same material at the table without the wear-and-tear.
Of course some aren't so great (such as my recent purchase of "School of Hard Knocks: The Skill Companion"). I simply re-OCR'd and scanned it in a full blown PDF editor, and it was golden. Used the heck out of those "Example Difficulties" to supplement RMU skill descriptions for my new players. ;D

Yeah back when I worked at a print shop, I trimmed all my old Rolemaster RM2 (red binding) books and coil bound them. So much easier to use than perfect binding.

First I need to re-read the first book to get my bearings!
Coil binding would be awesome! I did photocopies of relevant material and stuck them in sheet protectors in 3-ring binders.I have to admit I was a late-comer to the idea, but am a convert now. A few months ago I found a nice GBC Combine C20 on ShopGoodwill that was $10, with $15 in shipping. I've used it to make a bunch of physical reference copies of PDF's, and all my players have coil-bound character binders. The players binders have the basics; Character sheet, attack, crit and fumble tables, skill sheets, spell references, etc... When something changes, then the binder allows us to reopen the coil, replace the sheets, and seal it right back up. You can also put heavier covers over them (clear or not), and simple overhead transparency plastic sheets in front of certain pages so the players can use markers to annotate their sheets, instead of pencil.
Okay, I know it has been years, but I am officially back to working on the 2nd Shadowstone novel in the trilogy, (while I finish the Haalkitaine adventures, and work on the short EMER IV adventure...). The WORD file is open.Huzzah! Best news I've had all week. My wife will be thrilled (she's about finished the first one now), and has seemed to enjoy it greatly. Of course I've had to answer questions like "why does that sword the crazy guy have sound a lot like a light saber?" (sigh...."Asimov and Fritz Leiber.... " ::)
As I have said, most of Book II ("Secret Circle") is done, but some chapters are incomplete. Book III is tentatively named "The Soul Sword."

It's still the best version of Rolemaster. ;D
PDF's are the reason I wanted to see all the old books brought back though. Setting aside the binding issues, being able to highlight and make notes is a huge plus. I object to marking up or dogearing books on religious grounds too.
Having all the books on tablet along with Scrivener is nice too. I can work on my campaigns anywhere, and have my RPG library as a reference.

Looking forward to the sequels, and it's worth re-reading for its own sake. You're a great storyteller.

Well, thanks! And I promise more action in Book II
Well, thanks! And I promise more action in Book II
You're welcome. I actually thought the level of action in book 1 was fine. I like it when books or film rely on character dialog and relationship development over action, but for sure that style isn't for everyone. Good examples of it in my mind are Asimov's Foundation Trilogy or C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series.
I was also really fond of the story intro's on the old MERP line. Like the one at the start of Thieves of Tharbad was pretty awesome. Not sure who penned it, but Ciramir's internal dialog has a lot of impact and really gives you a feel for the setting.
Well, it basically is a lightsaber ;-) Sorry, I don't get the 'Asimov and Fritz Leiber' reference. I have read a lot of Asimov but not Leiber.Asimov had a force-field penknife talked about by two traders in the first Foundation novel, which IIRC was early 1950's. Fritz Leiber had a flashlight thing called "rods of wrath" which projected a violet energy force field from the top and at least once was used to dual. I think it was even earlier, like early 40's.

I loved Foundation (and the Caves of Steel series), and I have not read CJ Cherryh's Foreigner, but I highly recommend her 'Serpent's Reach.' I have read it several times. I also love Clarke, especially 'Rendezvous with Rama' (only the original, not the sequels, which he did not write). I think Rama would make a great movie, if they stayed close to the book.
re Thieves. Hmm, I edited that book, but don't recall if I wrote that. It might have been Jessica Ney. I'd have to go back and find it.

If it was Jessica then she's awesome.
The Foundation precursor novels 'Pebble in the Sky', 'The Stars like Dust', and 'The Currents of Space' are great too. This really more apropos to the Spacemaster forums, but I am kind of curious if any of the Spacemaster Terran Empire was derived from Asimov's galactic empire? I had read it was derived from Dune, but I haven't actually read Dune so I can't compare. The Empire always felt a bit like Asimov's to me. In point of fact as I tailored it to my own campaign the world at bureaucratic center ended up being called Proxima Trantor as a nod to both my own sci-fi roots in Asimov, and to Warhammer 40k. One of my players was really into Warhammer.
Cherryh's Fortress series is worth reading. I never knew if the series itself had an official name, but the first book was 'Fortress in the Eye of Time'. Great fantasy series.
I'd also recommend 'Fifth Quarter', and 'No Quarter' by Tanya Huff. It's an off the beaten path approach to a setting, but some of her social ideas were well ahead of their time. The story is very original too imo.
Niven's Ringworld makes me think of the Hindmost. Talk about an awesomely amusing racial concept for an alien. XD

Oh really? From whom? Actually I did some puppetry when I was younger, so it seemed like the natural thing to do. I tended to role-play more than the rest of the group.

Looking forward to this, and Emer IV, and Emer II, and Emer I.
Plus anything else the Amthor psyche can come up with. XD
I need to finish the small Emer IV independent adventure after Haalkitaine is out the door. This will be either 'pay what you want' or very inexpensive PDF, maybe with RMU.
Then Emer IV will be next, since Emer III sold really well. It is mostly written except stats and adventures. Then I really should complete NE Jaiman/Wuliris (I am completely redoing it with lots of Taranian ruins and some Zor; most of 'Sky Giants' is out the door), since it is almost completely written. Then I think Emer I and Emer II major revisions (like Eidolon), since they are already well underway as well.
One of the things I noticed is missing from both the Master Atlas and Powers is a monster chart for the Drones. You give some stats for Jenkyna's Omega, but no level and nothing on the other types of drones. I have the original box set atlas, so I can look up the stats in the set, but it would be nice to have them included in the updated materials.
One thing I would love to see expanded on are Shadow World specific monsters and artificial constructs. That's one of the aspects of Shadow World that makes the setting feel like Shadow World.
Update: I am taking a short break from Haalkitaine to knock out this small 'Intro to SW Emer' adventure (I can only slave over those Haalk adventures so long before I need a break). The adventure will be 8-12 pages long and will be offered on RPGNow as a separate item.

Well, if it keeps Terry sane for a few more years we should probably just quietly accept it as a necessary part of the process.
LOL! It's only for a week or so! I'll probably be back at Haalkitaine this weekend.
But what if it's the insanity that helps him create all these amazing worlds? All those voices in his head collaborating on these fine projects. No wonder it seems like he does the work of 5 people. There are 4 other voices in his head helping him out!
But what if it's the insanity that helps him create all these amazing worlds? All those voices in his head collaborating on these fine projects. No wonder it seems like he does the work of 5 people. There are 4 other voices in his head helping him out!
This would explain why he jumps from book to book as he works. o.O
Voice #1 "Today we work on Haalkitaine"
Voice #2 "No, it's Emer II!"
Voice #3 "Am I the only practical voice in the head?. It needs to be Emer IV, new region means new cash flow."
Voice #4 "I need caffeine, or I go on strike."
Just for the record I work pretty much exactly the same way when it comes to games. I work on whatever aspect of the game that I am inspired to work on at that moment, so I jump around from project to project all the time. XD
Ooooh! Emer II! So much new material, and adventures! And... Emer I!
I have basically all of Emer IV done except the layout text of the City of the Dead (still debating how to handle that; it is far too massive to do a complete layout so I may do an overview map, and the some detailed sections. How does that sound?) and some adventures.
Final word: I will never complete the 'Grand Campaign.' (That was actually a rather painful period during my breakup with ICE). But I welcome others to continue it! :-)

Having read all the new material, I'm not even sure how you could complete it without starting over from scratch. So much has changed, and in a good way.
Just one note. I did not like the illustration of Jenkyna in the Grand Campaign. It was a nice piece of art, but it really didn't seem to fit the character. Looked more like a maniacal human to me.
I think the art of Jenkyna and Ondoval from powers really fits the K'ta'viir, plus it kind of takes me back to the art style in the 80s ICE books, not to mention the overall punk rock feel of the characters that really sets them apart from the normal denizens of ShadowWorld. Anyways in powers the look she has in that art really gives you an impression of a Lady of the Old Race, who walks into a room expecting to own it.
Who can convert RM2 stats to RMSS/RMFRP in a comparable format (e.g., Tales from Green Gryphon) in a reasonable format (word or even excel) if provided the RM2 files in Word) fairly quickly and for a modest fee?
Is there an established conversion process or would the converter need to create one? I can imagine at least two methods for NPCs and additional methods for other things (like monsters, etc):
1) A detailed process in which you create the equivalent detailed character in RMFRP, based on a set of guidelines:
- Use the same level and equivalent profession, or closest match, if not directly available
- Buy skills based on the number of dev points available (if dev point stats are provided) or else some fixed number
- Do not use any talents/talent points except racial talents
- Do not use training packages
- Develop up to target level, summarize total skill mods and other figured stats
- Modify equipment or special characteristics for RMFRP
2) One could also just have a set of formulae that translates all the figured stats (HP/stats/skills) from RM2 to RMFRP, but I assume that if that were the process, you could do it yourself fairly easily.
For monsters and the magic items, I would assume that you'd have to do some sort of formula process or look up the equivalent in the RMFRP C&T book (if it exists) and do some manual translation.
What timescale do you want this done in?
There would be no need to create the RMSS character wholesale; just look at the RM2 stats and make a general transfer of stats, weapons and skills.
Finally after many delays, a new SW adventure.

Just to have an idea, what would be a fair price? 5$? 10$?
It might please some of you to know that I have opened the word file for the second book in the Loremaster novel series and begun a review to refresh my memory. I seem to have entered a manic writing phase! It definitely pleases me!

Excellent news on Haalkitaine; I plan on getting it as soon as it is available. Given the latest update you did in the newsletter, I assume that the Emer I/II revisions are going to be after the other items listed?
They have been unavailable for ages, and I'd like to see all of Emer in print at once! :)

Understandable. May I ask your location? My understanding is that we have print-on-demand locations in the US and UK, so that hardcopy buyers are spared overseas shipping.

Previews don't seem to be enabled for Haalkitaine. That's not going to bother me, but it might some.

Sorry if this isn't the best place to post this. I kind of felt like I shouldn't be the one to start an errata thread for your book.
Page 20 "Loremaster Reckoning." Is the g supposed to be a very stylized g?
In that same paragraph it looks like the numbers 9 and 7 ended up as subscript every time they were used Not sure if that is a stylistic choice or not, but in case not I figured better to point it out.
Under the Winter section.
1•8 isn't boldface like the others.
Under Spring
2•18 isn't boldface like the others.
Under Summer 3•8 & 3•35 aren't boldface.
Under Autumn 4•11 Crown Holiday: Anniversary of the gift of the crowns to the original six realms of Rhakhaan. I suspect you meant to say original six realms of Jaiman.
Under Fall
5•35 & 5•35-5•37 aren't boldface.

You mean beyond the cover? Yes, but they are just title and credits pages. The back cover image I uploaded tells you more.
Oh as if I don't have enough on my plate with Emer IV and Shadow World Adventures, there is talk of doing a revision of the classic Space Master 2nd Edition to update the Empire and (to an extent) the technology. That was a passion of mine... typing madly on a KAYPRO late in the night fueled by coca-colas from the ICE fridge...
So, the SpaceMaster setting definitely needs
redoing. Then there's Emer IV and Wuulris, the second book in the Loremaster Legacy, revamps of Emer I and II and other assorted things, such as Artefacts & Lost Tech. It seems there is no other alternative.
We're going to have to clone Terry.

Or a LOT more coffee! But for the Artefacts, I'd like to find an author and just edit it? And Legacys, well, I may have to release it in chapters, as much is written but much left to do...
Haalkitaine 2nd ed is now available in all formats! Please support ICE. Emer IV and new Jaiman NE are nearly done in manuscript phase

Would GMs be interested in a mini supplement with a bunch of interesting PC backgrounds, either living in Haalkitaine, or finding themselves in the city, with a setting where they might meet up, as a possible starting point for adventures? Detailed histories with convoluted families, lost items, dark pasts, and they just happen to meet in a tavern/party/brawl...

That was one thing I really liked about the Grand Campaign material.
after my falling out with ICE over paymentThat really sucks. :(
Anyway, the small PDF of the six heroes from the SW covers seemed popular, so as another interim mini, I might introduce some new, low-level characters, and a typical inn or tavern in Haalkitiane.
I think the fighter is clearly a Talath, and the mage maybe a Duranaki? If you are talking about the guy with the Mohawk, I think he is an elf. I have no idea what the lion-guy would be...

It's a bit hackneyed I know. Perhaps a dinner party hosted by the father of one of the PCs, who invited his/her childhood friends from school, and they reconnect. Thoughts? (I like distractions from Emer IV sometimes.)The dinner party thing is great, I don't know how the module goes, but something like a costume ball where the PCs need to locate a specific person to get some information from (of an item, or both) could be fun. The different guests would each have their own background and motivations. That could be a less normal/boring method of introducing NPCs. Plus, all those that the PCs don't interact with can easily be used for other things, because the PCs wouldn't have really seen them, so if you happen to use one somewhere a-thousand miles away it won't matter. But, any sort of NPC guide would be great and of immense use.
I have no idea what the lion-guy would be...I always think of that group as being the three humans and the elf. Not quite sure where the lion guy on the one cover came from, but the images I can find of it are all so small I can't even tell if it's McBride's work. The faces on the characters look different.

Edit: Actually not quite sure if the blond warrior is human or Elven. His ears on the image with the brass golem look like they may be Elven.
His ears do look a little Elven on that one picture, but they look much more normal on Character Law.
He left us too soon, and thinking about that loss is making me feel melancholy.

Definitely!
I'm also still interested in understanding whether the large-format sewer maps are available now in the bundle on DriveThru, or if they'll be available separately?---I'd definitely like to get print versions of both the new city maps as well as the sewer maps.
Allna.

At the expense of self-promoting... My novel has been given by readers as a good window into the Shadow World, so it might be a good introduction. And I am working on the next book.

My Haalkitaine book arrived last week and I've just now had a chance to sit with it. I thumbed through the pages quickly and settled in to read. Right off the bat, the weather chart on page 7 us awesome. I love it. and the Recreational Drug chart is awesome. That made me laugh. I am just floored by the amount of maps, adventures, and stats for the NPCs associated with each adventure. What a fantastic collection. I can't wait to get into it further. Great work, Terry!

Allan.
Thanks! If you can, please take a moment to post a brief review at RPGNow (actually just copying and pasting what you just wrote would be awesome! :-)

Done and done! I even corrected the grammatical errors. :) 5*, Terry. Haalkitaine is amazing.

(Just took out my copy and looked: sure enough, there you are. Cool.) While I am not a fan of the Christian-themed mythology stuff, I really liked the rules system of that game; it was Alternity years before Alternity. (I had always wished that the Alternity rules system was what they used for 3rd edition of D&D and not what we got.)

A reminder about a SW book from a few years back, the Shadow World Player Guide. An excellent value, and packed with information, including about Kulthea's moons and solar system, the Lords of Orhan and Dark Gods, and the major races. Richly illustrated with maps and views of various locations. Orhan Phases, realms of magic and climate.I have 6 of them and use them as, well, player's guides for the players to refer to basic info about the world. Handing them out to my players. (Getting them back when the campaign is over, of course. 8))

Yep I confirm, It is gold.Welcome !
By the way, as it is my first message on this forum, I will give a few words about me.
French, 46 years old, Rolemaster player and GM since I am sixteen (so looong ago). I was lucky to put my hand on the Master Atlas at that time (with the wondefull and enormous map of Western Kulthea!) and some Shadow World books.
I made a long RM break during 20 years, but I am back on the game as a GM (with the same team I had when is was 16).
I use a Mindmap software (Freeplane) to store all the informations on the Shadow World and I am working on a GIS (QGIS) to store all the usefull geographical informations (realms, secrets, cities, coral roads,...) and to design maps.
The work is quite enormous but it will be essential when I will begin the compain (next year I think).
Terry, I will never find the words to thank you for the creation of the Shadow World, I am eager to buy and read your next creations.

Nice to see there are some other French players here ;) Where are you located?
Thank you Crivens! I am humbled by your dedication, and hope my new works live up to your expectations.
There is not enough coffee in the world to fuel my Ideas...
Orléans, and you ?
Yep I confirm, It is gold.Oh, we're doing that ? OK...

Crivens I assume you meant 'rid' rather than 'ride' but I did have a great image of a tiny circus clown-car pulling up at the White House, and Trump and his incompetent crew all piling out in clown costumes. It made me smile.
Glad to hear the art for Emer is coming along, and I look forward to the new SW adventure!
Who will make the maps? I talked to a guy that allready some free SW maps https://mikaelsmaps.wordpress.com/home/fan-art/ (https://mikaelsmaps.wordpress.com/home/fan-art/)
My tentative schedule (in case anyone is interested, and assuming the U.S. is not embroiled in civil war after 11/3).
11/1: finish 'Subterfuge' layout (HARP book)
12/1: New SW Adventure
2/1: Emer IV (most of the art already done).

Where does HARP Bestiary fit in on the layout schedule. That is the book I am most looking forward to.
Bah. The City of the Dead should be a standalone book, classic megadungeon. Perhaps with iterative updates available to patreon-like subscribers. I think trying for fewer, larger works with broader foci is damaging your ability to release, Terry.

I rather like this idea, actually. That way I can complete Emer IV, and then do justice to the City on its own. I am discussing it with Nicholas.
Rest in Peace Terry. You will be dearly missed.
