"SHARP"...Simplified HARP...
« on: May 17, 2010, 05:52:47 PM »
Hiya.

  Color me surprised, but I just spend about an hour (or less) writing up a one pager that has ideas for using a more "simplified" resolution for HARP. I know there was that whole "d20ified" document, but, IMHO, too much to bother with. What I did was simply 'divide/multiply' any % roll stuff by 5; rounding down for 2, up for 3. In other words, a HARP bonus of +27 is a +5, while a +28 gives a +6.

  Anyway, only the "%'age" stuff really needs to be converted...as that's where the slowdown my group and I experienced when we played HARP. It started off fine, but after only about 2 hours the math was just getting in the way. Adding 7 to a roll of 12 is easier than adding 33 to a roll of 58...even more so when to get that 7 you had to take 4 -1 +2 +2, and not 18 -5 +9 +12. Toss in being the end of the night and/or a beer or Brown Cow or two and we gave up.

 So...has anyone else "simplified" HARP's core mechanic to be, well, simplified?

I only roll the 10s dice for NPCs when I roll.  Generally, if the two 10s (one from the roll & 1 from the skill) exceed the target number, the one are irrelevent.  If you roll a 90, or 00, then roll the 1s dice to check for high/low open-ended rolls.  For Combat, add 1D10 to the crit.

Hi pming,

I simplified the character creation (actually I expand the d20fied-document). The calculations and the creation process are less time-consuming. And the system is now a true D20-based system (not a D100-System with subsequent conversions).

P.S.: If you see some mistakes in writing, please post them to me (I'd like to improve my poor English skills).

Hi,

Use the drunkards rule and make it simpler.

Dont worry about exacts when calculating... just make informed guesses...

eg: 134 + 47 = 130+40 = 170+10 for the extras = 180ish... close enough.

Shouldn't that be 134 + 47 --> 130 + 50 = 180 ??

No - the way he did it was to take the ten's  130 + 40 = 170 and then added 10 for the ones.

I thought that dividing everything by 10 might make things much easier.  Though, I'm sure that will cause some problems, hehe.
