Why has the campaign failed
« on: January 16, 2010, 01:29:28 AM »
Similar to "your current game" thread, why did your last game fizzle, fail, end, take a holiday..

I'm gaming 1/month and I don't want to lose the spark, just when I'm having fun. I've had plenty of games fade away... when I should've just 'put them down'.But I really like that new campaign smell. So whadyado? How do you keep it going. To what lengths do we go to maintain the spark and energy of younger, earlier, less saggy campaigns of our youth?

In our group campaign usually end when the PCs make some moron decision which get all them killed.

I also remember playing a campaing of THE UNMENTIONABLE GAME and giving up on it because some of the players did'nt show for game night because they "had to watch fotball in stead". This happened two sessions in a row and we let the campaign die of..
If you're having fun, you're doing it right!

My last campaign ended because half of the party moved to another town  :-\
I mostly play one-shots recently (face-to-face, I've a couple of campaign going by forum/wave) so I don't have this problem anymore  ;D
I suppose a magician might, he admitted, but a gentleman never could.

Sometimes the GM gets tired of GMing that story line or the players get tired of their PC's. Or hopefully the story line has come to an end.

As GM I once got lost in my own storyline and messed it all up. That was after a couple years of good gaming. Probably from GM burnout.

People moving is the only other reason for us us. Luckily.  ;D

The vast majority of my games have failed/ended due to to real world concerns. Like when I moved. Or when jobs and family intervene.

round here, its all about babies, babies, babies.  growing families has ended our once regular group.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

giving up on it because some of the players did'nt show for game night

At times like this I quickly tell their buddy who assumed that they had a NPC for the night, that the absent player is doing something that can't help them fight/pack mule/meat shield for them.
Player: "Well the "guy who didn't show" is gonna.."
Me: "Escort the refugees back to town.. yes."

I had a GM that postulated PCs would turn into cucumber seed sandwiches when the player did show up.  Logic being that nobody likes to eat a sandwich made solely from cucumber seeds. :D

Fornitus, that is a very honest answer.
I've had a similar experience from another game. Lost the reason we got together in the first place.
Now that I'm running RM, I think I've found it again! :)

To keep things interesting around the gaming table,
I've found a ton of paper mini sets, buildings and landscapes to download as free pdf files. That's a brilliant job of advertising. These are so cool I might actually spend a few bucks on the cool stuff.

The problem is that you have to print them out and fold, glue, tape them together.. The most excellent part is the free bit. So my walls look a bit crooked and my covered bridge leans a bit.. but that's character. Since we game but 1/mth, I probably wouldn't see the return on a huge pack of plastic dungeon geomorphs and I have time to build these scenes. :)
Some free stuff: Fat dragon Games, WOTC, Dugeoncrawlers (ok..) Germy's World (really cool tips), etc..
