Commercializing Space Exploration debate- tonight at 7:30
« on: March 19, 2014, 11:19:44 AM »
Neil deGrasse Tyson is hosting the 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate, titled "Selling Space" tonight at 7:30 (EDT): http://www.scientificcomputing.com/news/2014/03/neil-degrasse-tyson-host-debate-commercializing-space-exploration?et_cid=3831689&et_rid=54634990&location=top

Wish I could see it, but I'll be busy with something else.  Hope that it is set up to be able to watch afterwards, as I'd love to see this.

While this is not directly Spacemaster related, it is in a tangential sort of way, so pardon the posting here, but I wanted to be sure that anyone who is a Spacemaster and sci-fi fan hopefully sees this and is able to watch it if time and scheduling allows.

Have it bookmarked with a sticky on side the monitor.

Thanks.

Yup, was hoping that was the case.  Had went to the link this morning to see.  It wasn't available for viewing at that point, but looks like it will be later today (if its not already available).

Did you see it Terry?  How about you arakish?

I watched part of it and it just seemed basically like a lot of "Are you SURE you're going to make sure it's safe???" and the corps looking into it saying "Of course it will be safe!"
Note; I'm not saying I don't believe them - it just seemed like a whole bunch of: Are you sure? Yes. Are you really sure? Yes, we're really sure. REALLY? Really.

Personally I think it's a good thing.  The military/government often starts technology that the private sector runs with and makes an 'everyday' thing, often while being much more efficient at the bureaucracy/details involved in it.  Invest now and you just might be sitting on a nice balance in 20 years.

How about you arakish?

I tried.  But I am also packing to move back to NC.  Got a job with NCDOT as a GISS.  It means a pay raise of about 17% in a location where cost of living is the same as here.  While packing, which I usually start about 0600hrs, I got tired, laid down for a short nap, then awoke to find I had missed it though.  However, the link Terry gave seems to already have it archived for later viewing.

Thanks Terry.
