Guild Companion November 2012 (Issue 165)
« on: November 08, 2012, 05:19:07 PM »
Greetings from the Guild Companion; Issue 165 is available at www.guildcompanion.com.

This month we present new options for HARP to make combat more like Rolemaster (including lethal criticals!) and a fourth lamp in the inaccurately-named trilogy-of-lamps. The Forgotten Realms conversion continues with an analysis of Dwarves and Gnomes.

I love the attention to detail in the Forgotten Realms conversions, and the latest is no exception to that. I have toyed with developing a conversion for Greyhawk, but looking at the amount of data to be covered I baulk at the very thought.

Wow! The RM-like combat for HARP is very similar to what I was trying to do using RMCo VI (one-roll combat resolution)! I was still going to keep the critical tables, and the attack size would affect the critical "letter".

Good work from the author!

I found a typo!

The Thrown Weapon Attack Table has the title: Pole Arms.

Oh, I must have missed this. It's now corrected in my manuscript.

better than I have been using since it differentiates between armor types
however I am yet to play test it..

one question that springs to mind is how do you account for fighting styles?
one of my PCs has Blade barrier Style that allows for;

Quote from: blade barrier
"..If an attack using this style causes damage, the character may add his
Strength bonus to the weapon’s size modifier before
applying it to the critical. The addition of the character’s
Strength bonus cannot raise the damage done by the
attack above the Damage Cap for the weapon."

how would this affect your combat results?

The universe is hostile. So impersonal. Devour to survive; So it is; So it's always been.  ~Tool; Vicarious~

In our first real playtest last weekend the same question about the Blade Barrier style came up. I attached the most recent version of the rules document, where you can see how we solved the issue. It boils down to adding St bonus to the OB once at least one concussion hit was achieved.

FYI, the players where quite pleased with the system since it combines the simplicity of HARP with the diversity of results RM offers.
