SM: P Tech Law VM 2-4 CVC Step 23 S: P VM p. 118 Errata
« on: June 08, 2011, 08:41:40 PM »
The example for Step 23, found on p. 118 of SM: P VM, appears to have miscalculated the control area volume for the TMAC. The example states that the control are has a mass of 6 metric tons and takes up 9 kiloliters of volume for 2 crew members.

The formula are:
Total Volume of Control Areas = (# of non-general members) x 9

9 = # Non-general crew x 9 = 9 ÷ 9 = # Non-general crew = 1 non-general crew member

Total Mass of Control Areas = (# of non-general members) x 3

6 = # Non-general crew x 3 = 6 ÷ 3 = # Non-general crew = 2 non-general crew members

Recommend that the volume of 9 kiloliters be changed to 18 kiloliters. I will provide another update if the missing 9 kiloliters are not part of the final volume calculations.

I concur with your observations about the error in math and adding it to the errata.

Hello Marc R,

The corretct volume for the Control Area is 18 kiloliters not 9 kiloliters as stated in the example on p. 118.

Is the 18KL in the rules, and the 9KL in the example? What page is the 18KL reference on?

The math is wrong in the example on page 118 of the SM:P VM. The info I believe is found in the text or on a chart near by.

Hello Marc R and MarkC,

The example text, SM: VM p 118, states that the Control area takes up
Quote
3 metric tons and 9 kiloliters per person, this gives Gary a total of 6 metric tons and 9 kiloliters.

The volume for 1 person is 9 kiloliters the volume
for two people should be 18 kiloliters.

Quote
The volume formula, p. 118 is:
Total Volume of Control Areas = (# of non-general members) x 9

9 = # Non-general crew x 9 = 9 ÷ 9 = # Non-general crew = 1 non-general crew member

Total Mass of Control Areas = (# of non-general members) x 3

6 = # Non-general crew x 3 = 6 ÷ 3 = # Non-general crew = 2 non-general crew members

The example states that the TMAC's Control area has a mass of 6 tons and a volume of 9 kiloliters.

The Control Area Volume formula per p. 118 is:

(Number of non-general members) x 9 kiloliters.

The TMAC has 2 non-general members, the pilot and the gunner/EW operator. 2 x 9 = 18 kiloliters not 9 kiloliters as stated in the example on SM: P VM p. 118.

Aha, I thought you had 1 crew = 18 somewhere, and I couldn't find that anywhere. . .the issue is that the the TMAC is a two-man and thus 2x9=18.

OK, if that's correct, likely another typo. We on the same wavelength now?

Hooray, and again my apologies for being less than clear in what I was trying to say.

Yes, the issue was the TMAC total control area volume calculation in the example should be 18 kiloliters instead of 9 kiloliters.
