a question about crossbows ...
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:05:22 AM »
hey out there!

our team (some sneakers) has looted a lot of light x-bows from our prey.
but none of us is proficient in them.
so the idea came up to set up quarrel traps.
that'd be right up my alley but there is an upcoming question:

how long can a x-bow be bow-taut? i know a bow shouldn't be taut longer than a couple of minutes.
are there any rules for harp?
does anybody have experience in bows and x-bows and know how long they can be bow-taut w/o become seious damaged?

thx

Depends on a lot of factors like:

Is it a torsion bow, where the staves don't bend, the tension being in wound up ox sinew or the like?

If a tension bow, is it wood stave? Metal Stave?

Is the string a string, a cord of gut, a wire, braided wire?

Is it a sturdy, heavy trigger mechanism, a light, hair trigger one?

In the ideal scenario, where it's a tension bow, with a metal stave, using braided metal cable and a sturdy metal mechanical trigger. . .then likely it can sit under tension for a long, long time. . .like years or decades long.

If it's a torsion bow, or a wood stave, with a wooden trigger mechanism using a gut string, then likely it'll stretch the string out over lengthy periods at cock, or the bow will lose it's spring over longer time. . .or a carved wooden peg mechanism or delivate mechanical trigger might just give up and break.

It's one of those "GM can call it as they choose" scenarios, since there's a great amount of variety in crossbow construction.

thank you for your detailed responding.

Ok, let's say it's made of wood, with a gut string. a harp light x-bow with RI 50' with 5rds (10 seconds) loading or reloading time.

is approx taut time about 5 minutes or 5 hours?
and in a scenario where i don't want to use them a second time?
because 5 minutes would be ok, but not usable for a trap, otherwise would this change my view of spike traps a lot.

In a damp area, that string wouldn't last long under tension, it would slowly stretch out. . .5 hours is likely more reasonable than 5 minutes, otherwise your bow would crap out on you during a long chase, or while the guard is on duty with his bow ready. . .really, you could probably keep a crossbow cocked "all day" if you gave it regular maintenance, but an indiana jones style hall of dart throwers that last for centuries is highly unlikely.

Gut string used to be a good choice for sutures, back in the day.
With some decent braiding and wax or tallow, I would expect a few days of tension. Just a guess.

Maybe more than a few days.  :)
They might not keep their musical pitch after a few days in a humid environ, but they should still be more than able to function. Tennis rackets, Bow strings, harp, cello.. wow. I had no idea how useful this stuff was. Thanx.
