RMC: Magic in a medival world
« on: January 22, 2009, 08:25:44 AM »
Hi there,

I'd like to use RMC in the world of Harn.

The biggest setback is the magic system of rolemaster.

I need to see if it's possible to "model" a system viable in a consistent, realistic, believabily world.

A world in wich resurrection (lifegiving) is not possibile.
A world in wich fireball and lighting are not the "daily buiseness".
A world in wich magic is present, and powerfull, but in a subtle way.
Were a mage could not wake up a day and decide that his new castle will be built with tens of "stone wall" spells.

A medieval world in wich magic and mundane cohexist, but none has the "advantage".

Can you help?

Should be possible.  Some questions first.
In HARN what is the source (sources) of Magic?
Do those that cast magic practice exclusively or do they tend to have another focus (foci) as well?
What is the most powerful effect a magic user can cast and how powerful do they have to be to cast it?
Anything that makes the GMs life easier without messing the game up will always get a vote from me.

The sources of magic are:

Divine
A "type" of essece, that is subdivided in 6 convocation: fire, water, earth, air, mind and nature.

No "material" can be created, but needs a focus.

To cast fireball a flame is needed.
To cast "sea of fire" you need a large surface of flamable materials (like underbrush, etc.).

Magic is very powerfull, but not omnipotent and is very exhausting.
Mages (Shek-pvar) create their personal spells. There isn't a concept as a "general" list of spells.
Every shek-pvar is a world apart, even from the some convocation.

That said, even magic items are common, but a lenghty process to do, and are not the definitive item.
Even healing is an acceleration of the process.

So IF you will heal in a week, with a divine spell you heal in a day.
If you will NOT heal, because the wounds is grievous, you will have much difficulty even with magic, and can still die.

I once did a write up for using RMSS in HARN - specifically, the Shek=P'var. If you are interested, you can find the list of pages at http://wizlair.net/plugins/content/content.php?cat.9 -- but be warned, my webserver is cheap, and therefore it sucks sometimes and can be very slow...

Rasyr, very good work.

I can elaborate on this, and comeup with something for RMC.
Perhaps using the base RMC class, with different base list, as from convocation or religion.
