Coral Road
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:13:45 PM »
Hey guys,

In the SW resources I've got, the description of the Coral Roads is pretty vague without any detail given. Anybody have a nice succint description that I can use when the time comes? What are the entrances like? How were they made? Thanks for the help, guys.

A rough description is that they were grown from living coral along the ocean floors by Earthwardens.

If memory serves, there are some more info about the Coral roads in the Xaar sourcebook.

See also Master Atlas, e.g., p. 84 in 4th edition.

Yup.  There is a bit more on Coral Roads in Xa'ar, but its still pretty open for development.  Actually theres not much on the Earthwardens in general/

I think Xa'ar has the largest description of the Earthwardens, a bit less than a page all told.

Yeah, I have both the M-A and Xa-ar. Frankly I was surprised at the lack of detail on the CR. Are the entrances open to the air or do they have some kind of funky door? I know about the crystal windows and that's about it.

That's one thing SW needs... a good lexicon like the H?rnDex. I'm constantly having to flip pages to find even the most basic of references. Page number cross-referencing is also non-existent. It makes getting the most out of the setting much more time-consuming than it has to be. Given the its large scope of SW a "Master Index" might be a handy thing to have! :)

Still, we've played two sessions in Xa-ar so far, and we're having a blast with it. It's a nice change, that's for sure. :)

That shouldn't be too hard to do. Time consuming, yes, but not actually difficult. I wonder what the best software for doing something like that would be.

The entrances to the Coral Roads are all hidden, and each is unique. There was a Kalen's Journal intro in one of the Atlases describing a Navigator opening a doorway for them.  Here's the description from the MA3Ed with some description:

These beautiful, ancient submarine highways were constructed
(or grown) in the Interregnum between the First and Second Eras
by a mysterious group known only as the Earthwardens. Aboveground
entries to the network are cleverly hidden in rocky coastlines
or lonely atolls. Over the millennia some of these entryways?
and some tunnels themselves?have been flooded or sealed off by
the naturally growing coral. The Coral Roads usually follow island
chains and undersea ridges, always in shallow water. Inside,
the roads are arched corridors made up of coral and shell; some
areas are translucent to allow filtered sunlight to illuminate the
tunnels by day. Phosphorescent corals provide a dim blue-green
light at night. Periodically along the route and at junctions there
are airlocks with doors made of huge bivalve shells. The floors are
uniformly smooth and flat, like mother-of-pearl.
It is believed that the Earthwardens built the Coral Roads as a
secret, secure way to travel about the planet without being seen
by powerful rivals?possibly surviving K?ta?viiri. It is also assumed
that they used some sort of vehicles or beasts of burden to traverse
the roads swiftly; perhaps precursors of the Tartu.
There is no known existing complete map of the Coral Road
system, and the few partial maps are closely guarded.

Thanks Terry. Nice atmospheric description. I really like Xa-ar's set up, BTW. The adventures are pretty easy to use and riff off of on the fly. I'm a pretty loosey-goosey GM, and it suits my play style. I think future supplements should have a similar format to Xa-ar. The PC's have replaced Tlilok, and they're going to feed the ferret next, I think. :)

Best regards,

You're confusing something. That's a door in the bridge caves, built by Yaalc Muul. But he is not an Earthwarden and the bridge caves are no Coral Roads.

But: a picture of a Coral Road entrance can be seen in the West Gallery of Terry's SW page: http://homepage.mac.com/terbob/gallery_lictor/gallery_w.html

My bad, I stand corrected.

Oooh, forgot about those old galleries! I'm glad I moved them to mac.com, as they used to be on AOL and I think they shut a lot of that down. Thanks for the reminder Vurkanen.
