Our first RM session
« on: May 26, 2008, 11:19:22 PM »
Only two of the three players, but we had the first tiny session tonight and we had a blast.

They got their mission (rescue farmers taken hostage by a tribe of warlike hillmen.. this is going to be the hook to draw them into something much larger along the way)

The woods are crawling with goblins (there's a war between hte goblins and the hillmen, but the nice, civilized folks dont know this yet) so they encountered a goblin ambush, which they defeated easily.

Second encounter was a hillman scouting party, which ended with the dwarf wounded but the characters victorious (high man paladin and dwarf fighter). They decided to fall back to the town, sell the gear they looted and get some healing before venturing out again, a little more cautiously this time.

Over all, we had an absolute blast with our first session, got to cast a few spells, use a few skills and fight a bit, and even used the book experience system, and it was allright, though it slowed us down a little.

Good times :)

If you are going to use the book, then create an experience table to track exp during play.

You can fit all the exp stuff on one page and the players can just check off what they do as they play.  It is simple and easy and will eliminate the extra time spent.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

So second session... They cleared up the bandit camp in a righteous display of violence, and found out that they were hired by a mysterious old man paying the bandits to bring him children.

Eerie huh.

Observations:

Spears suck against plate armour

Missile fire is very very deadly

The x5 "first time" experience modifier makes a huge impact. As does the "Idea" experience. The dabbler levelled up in his first session, and the paladin reached level 2 as well.
The dwarf was missing this time, but he'll catch up just fine

Yeah, just about every weapon depending on a point or a sharp edge such against plate armour :) A good hammer or Mace will do a lot better.

And yes it never fails to surprise new players, that missile fire in RM is very deadly :)
I'm new here, but have played RM2 on and off for 20 years. :)

Its deceptive because the rate of fire is lower than in most games, so it kind of sneaks up on you :)

It's supposed to be.  Archery is a deadly business.  A good marksman, with a Welsh Longbow, is trained to shoot as accurately as possible and as fast as possible during the 100 years war.  So dangerous was the Welsh longbowman that prisoners would often have their two fingers cut off.

To get a good idea on how dangerous Archery is, I recommend watching "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn (which is a Good Rolemaster movie, at least compared to Archery).  The other live action movie, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" is also recommended [mostly because they worked on the backstory of Robin of Locksley, who was only a minor Knight Bachelor at the start] but the 1930's classic is one I highly recommend. Disney's classic is a D&D movie.
