Title: Is there no longer a system of 'real person' verfication for new users?

If not, can we please re-implement it?

I second that.

There is no easy and efficient real person verification that would not be incredibly intrusive to the people who are interested in the products.

The current process is connected to a master spammer database, but while it has quarantined more than 15,000 applicants - it only takes a little extra effort to get by it with a new email address and new IP address - neither taking much time or energy.   Despite that, the number of spam attacks that have gotten onto these boards have been minimal overall, and when they hit they are addressed rapidly.

What about those weird pictures or questions that a computer can't read the letters in or answer?

Human verification processes (there is one) only work if it's a computer applying. I imagine a lot of the spammers who are actually getting through aren't automated; they are real people. Just spammers - or, more likely, in the employ of spammers.

Agreed - considering the # of spammers we get and the speed they are dealt with (mainly thanks to Markc and Colin) we don't consider this a high priority issue and don't want to take time away from other projects to implement changes like that.
