Stone Shoed Goblins
« on: November 15, 2015, 10:52:31 PM »
I recently discovered that the goblins in George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin have very tender feet and their queen wears stone shoes.  I always wondered where this bit of Rolemaster lore originated from so I thought I'd share.  I'd read MacDonald's Phantasies in A Treasury of Fantasy, and the humble knight in tarnished armor is a recurring theme in my games, but wasn't aware he'd written other things.

Funnily enough I had never noticed that bit of lore until a couple of weeks ago when I used goblins as the villain for the first time in years!

In Underground Races stone clogs are standard. Great book.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

In the story the young hero defeats armed goblins by stomping on their feet.

Now I just have to figure out where the GURPS Merchant / Wanderer Goblins come from.  There's a hint in the first version of GURPS Fantasy, a throw away line about those who have access to a complete history of Goblins and I've been wondering for nearly thirty years.
