Background Option Stat Gain
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:26:17 PM »
Hi - german speaking player here with some language trouble :)

on p57 RMSS (or in the RMFRP) there is a passage:

"this background option gives your character an extra stat gain roll for each of his skills"

So: can I really for just ONE background option roll once for EVERY of the 10 stats?

Or can I roll ONCE for one of the stats?

thanks

Correct it should say "....an extra stat gain roll for each of his stats."

Yes this is a powerful BO and some GM's have a house rule that alters it to only 1-5 stats receive a extra roll. Also you can see the benefit as your stats will be higher and you will get more DP per level sooner than other PC's.

Does that help?

I don't see what is so powerful about this BO really.  You'll get a few bonuses a few levels early, and you'll get a few extra DPs for a few levels too, but on the other hand you skip on a merit or permanent bonus to a category or skill, etc.  Never used it on any of my characters.

It is sort oh hard to find but many GM's do not use the talent/BO as proscribed in the book.

I agree, stat gains IMHO, only help at lower levels...
But they influence a lot of skills and "stuff" needed for play.

While increasing a Skill/Cat will always help with that Skill/Cat, eventually Ranks will make up the difference.

OK, maybe Background Options only help at lower levels.... :-[
In my experience... every little bit counts!

The Stat gain should affect Potentials.... perhaps?  :)

As the potential stat is the genetic maximum that character can attain, how and why should potentials be affected by stat gain rolls?

There is a bg option to purchase 20 stat points, which can be used to increase potentials.

Typically, it takes till around 5th level to max out potentials.  The stat gain roll bg option is a nice way to reflect a first level character with "life experience".
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

As stated earlier, Stats max out at around 5th level. So, why have a bonus now, when you could get a bigger bonus -higher maxed out Potentials around 5th or 6th. This isn't cannon. I just thought it might be a good idea.

Perhaps genetic maximum is a bit rigid. IMO, genetic max potential and using age modifiers could work also.
For me, people aren't only bound by genetics. Lifestyle, diet, training, etc. all play a big part in the characters' development. Rather than have rolls for each of these... give them a chance to increase Potentials.
Just a thought.. :)
