Mystical/Magical Gem properties
« on: August 26, 2014, 01:36:25 PM »
I am looking for a resource that gives fantasy style magical properties to Gems.

Most of the sites I have found really only focus on "New age" meanings and stuff.

I am looking for something more to enhance magic and so forth.

Anyone got any suggestions?

There was a brief list in the AD&D DM's Guide (1st ed). RPGNow may be a good place to look otherwise; there's at least one supplement on the subject, Elemental Gemstones from Bards & Sages.
I made some things! Azukail Games

thanks Egd,

That may be exactly what I am looking for.
Though if anyone else has any suggestions I would love to receive them.

The RMSS Essence Comp, RM2 Alchemy Comp (IIRC), Elemental Gems in the RMSS/FRP Elemental Comp or the addendum (IIRC), some mention in the RM2 Elemental Comp and I think in one of the SW Atlas's or one of the addendum's there is info that is close to the info in the RMSS Essence Comp.

Now the RMSS Essence Comp provides medieval info for the gems (sort of new age I guess but not as new age as I have seen) and from there you can extrapolate.
In the past I got a free copy of a book from DTRPG that was 101 gems or something like that, that was new age with some D&D thrown in. I pitched my copy as I know I would never use it.

Can you be more specific on enhance magic?

I am writing a spell list for making Gemstone Foci.

That is Gems that can reduce the cost of casting spells. ( rather than being multipliers or adders, they don't increase your power, they just reduce the cost of power you use.

The Type of Gem used though may have "additional" bonus effects when used with magic it is more potent with, or if used with making it is opposed with, might be less potent.

There are rules for corpus and catalyst caster in RMSS essence Comp. Also IMHO gems that always reduce PP costs of spells are a lot more powerful then PP Adders and are in effect the same as PP Multipliers.

As far as traditional attributed properties of gemstones, they tend to be repetitive and general (good luck, good health, etc.) or overly specific within the same general areas (wards off drunkenness, protects against a particular disease, etc.). So, you need to decide what areas you want gems to be useful in and just assign different stones (or different aspects of a stone like being cut in a certain way or having a type of flaw) to those areas. Unless you are starting in with the gem trade in your play, it's the sort of thing you can develop as you go along; just keep good notes.

To make it easy on yourself, given your scope of stated interest, gem value and color might be enough. Green for Essence, Blue for Mentalism, Red for Channeling, Yellow for Hybrid, Clear for Healing and Defense of all types, large flaws for Evil magic, for example.

If I am not mistaken the MERP Guide "Treasures of MiddleEarth" had a section on gems and the magical properties of gems?

I will look it up tonight for you and post on your thread.
