Traveller Background to Spacemaster
« on: August 30, 2009, 12:34:02 PM »
HI,

i like the spacemaster rules, but i also like the 3rd Imperium of the Traveller-Setting (and dislike the traveller rules for combat, skills and charakter creation). I like the world creation from Traveller.
Is there anyone who tried to convert this setting to the spacemaster rules?

Yes David Johansen gave you his info here in your other thread.
Ah there they are:

http://www.guildcompanion.com/scrolls/2003/mar/tcgraces.html

2003 as it happens.

I also know others have talked about it but I have not seen anything on it. I have used Traveller stuff with SM:P adventures without any problems but then I have been GMing for a long time and do not have trouble doing stuff on the fly.

 Those look good.

I see that you forgot to list the Mind Point Dev for Droyne.

As for Xanotasians.  All Droyne are psionics.  They should also get Psychic Invisibility as an Everyman skill.

I'll get Talent Point totals up and tweak them sometime.  It's just been a brutal week with the kids getting back to school.

Why are the sollies so weak? Is that a typo?

While I don't use all the SpaM rules, I do use Blaster Law as my combat system and find it works great for Traveller. As lethal as Traveller is sold as and a hell of a lot more fun than any Traveller ruleset. Or any other rpg system, bar 4th ed D&D, but for different reasons.

I posted a table somewhere for translating muzzle energies into SpaM terms, so if you use TNE, or real world weapons they might help stat it out. Other than that I can't help much as my character generation and skill calculations are homebrewed, other than to say give it a shot...

I agree. Most often when I buy a game it is for the background material and then I convert it to SM:P or I could say convert SM:P to it.

It's because they are inferior to the mighty Vilani!  Or it's a typo...

Yes, the shugalli (cook / homeopath) is a harsh master but it makes us STRONGER than you Solomani with your soda pop and candy rotted teeth!

Actually, ancient advances in genetics mean an end to any dental hygene or potential weightgain issues. Solomani industries, building better people at a genetic level. Apply for your grant through your local party office.

Oh wait, you don't understand genetics? Ermm, magic pixies make people strong by eating doughnuts... :)

We understand genetics well enough to know better.  You Solomani just rush into everything without considering the consequences for a decent number of generations.  Small wonder your people lacked the character to maintain an empire.

[OK, while this play-by-post is fun, it's also kinda threadjacking, so I'll stop]
Back on topic, are you still working on this, or was that a quick example for Nimbul? While I don't use the full SpaM rules for Traveller in my current game, it doesn't mean I won't in the future. (converting 7 8th level characters turned me off, as I had not mastered the system) Seeing conversions by those who understand the system better is of real, genuine help for doing so in the future. So I'll be keeping an eye on this thread in the future and popping in with the occasional question anyway.

For higher level PC's I just use the chart in the SM:P book that gives skills for various levels of professions.

Oh, I'll get it straightend out and done, it's just been some crazy weeks here.

I need to put Awareness skills into the racial background skills, for one thing.

As far as higher level characters go, it's actually not much more work at any given level, at the easiest you can just multiply the first level ranks by eight.  But even actually spending the DPs is pretty simple.  I will point out that the most important thing to remember is that there is absolutely no reason to total the bonuses for each level.  Just do it once.

Interesting, though I'm barely familiar with Spacemaster.

I've thought to use the Falar as templates for Aslan clans, differing types of aslans within
their overall race, or is that too narrow an interpretation ?

I like the Oorts too. They'd be a nice port to any other RPG, including Traveller  ;D
