The Healing system
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:26:22 PM »
Hello all, I'm hoping some one can answer this question for me.

We play the Classic edition of RM, I am stumped by the Healing system.

How does it work? I have a Healer in the party, and most of the spells have a time of recovery listed, but the Frost/burn reliefs don't.  Therefore how is that magic applied?  what are the recovery times if a Healer takes on a large burn?

With no listed recovery time, assume the recovery for the Healer is instant.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

No it only applies to spells.

Herbs sometimes have a recovery time listed, but many do not.  I have notes next to my herb list that is code for recovery, partially based on how successful use prep herb is (not all herbs can have recovery time reduced through use of the skill, while 1st aid or herb lore is considered to prperly use the herb with normal recovery times).

Your best bet is to do the leg work and make notes on recovery for EVERY herb that doesnt have them already.

Hands of the Healer is an out of print book with really good info on recovery times for herbs.

Harfy in my game instantly stops bleeding.  Lesser Harfy is more common and is called Reuff (roof).  It instantly stops 3hits of bleeding and then 1 hit per minute.  So a five hit bleeder takes two minutes to stop bleeding fully and the compress must be held against the wound for two minutes.  While the wound heals, an additional 18 hits is suffered.

Fleshing out the herbs provides lots of rich detail the players will like.  So grab your pen and legal pad and go to town...err...turn on your laptop and make a word file is what this middle age geazer meant.

Yes, it was the last book published for MERP, but was quite useful for Rolemaster as well. Here is a link with a description of it:

The MERP books are held by Tolkin Ent IIRC and will not be reprinted any time soon if ever.

That said it can also be a very very hard book to find as a lot of people find it useful. But checking the various stores is always a good idea as people turn in stuff to sell all the time.

If the Herb in question does not have a healing time then IMHO it is instant. Having said that as Yammahopper said above some like more detain for herbs and have created a system to make it so. ie not all are instant and some take time to have full effect as well as all have addiction factors. Some have also made up there own special side effects like having to eat more food for high powered healing herbs and other such things. If you do not take into account the side effects and resolve them then the full effect of the herb does not take effect.

IMHO... It was possibly the most useful and interesting supplement that ICE ever released. Good luck with finding a legal copy.

It's one of those things that should be at the top of the list for re-branding to a non-MERP product, along with discription of the uses for minerals, components and poisons in games. A good reference book for this sort of stuff is a real boon for GM's, regardless of what system they play.

I don't know about the herbs in RMSS/RMFRP but only one or two herbs had any information on healing time and those were both with instant effect. I assume the others had somewhat longer times.

I did in fact, go through every herb in all the modules and companions and give them effect times. Putting it all on a spreadsheet made things a lot easier.

Goddessis, look in  the Vault, under Downloads. In the RMSS/FRP "Tables" section you'll find a file called "Herbs and Poisons". I think that might help.

You would have to attach some game mechanics but the real world book Gerard's Herbal, originally published in 1597 has some interesting stuff which could easily be adapted to any roleplaying game. (I would not try some of the potions in real life though!)
