Title: HARP-style XP system?
Post by: dutch206 on April 23, 2008, 06:53:58 AM
Instead of the mountain of book-keeping that Rolemaster's experince system requires (either version), has anybody thought about using a modified version of the HARP experience system?  It would be much easier to keep track of story awards and party goals than the current system.

Rolemaster Express contains a just such an XP system (though only for Party goals -- wouldn't be hard to expand it to include Personal Goals as well).

I haven't bought HARP yet (I'm only one guy, I can only buy so much at a time!) so I'm not familiar with how it works but I never used the Standard XP system.  Instead, I award XP based on party goals (did they complete the adventure or advance the story usually) and on personal goals (typically based on ideas, worked on with the player, expanded from the "alignment" section).  This keeps everyone at, more or less, the same level.

Tracking every use of skills, and how successful they were, is too much of a hassle.  I prefer story-based awards.

HARP uses goal based XP system as well jolt

You can download the whole HARP Lite PDF from http://www.harphq.com

but here is the XP system from it for you

Bu in short, there are 4 types of goals --  Major Party, Minor Party, Major Personal, Minor Personal

And completing those goals earns you XP...

I've modified the HARP version a bit to suit my likings. It's at the bottom of this post (http://www.rpgrm.com/rmsmf/index.php?topic=1278.msg28050#msg28050).

Yes I use a system close to HARP as well as award DP's for extra-ordinary things during the adventure. I also provide DP at every 1/3 of a level so PC's can spend there DP in small steps and not huge chunks.

We also use a goal-based XP system. You can find the details in the House Rules document on my homepage.

In order to use the HARP system with RM, there would obviously have to be changes made.  For starters, Level two for HARP starts at 300 XP, whereas you need 10,000 more XP to hit level 2 in RM.

Yes, and RMX makes those changes in the version printed in it.

Password protected website.

Sorry, I didn't think of that.
But why not join it then? It's free and the people there are kind and do not play D20-like games there... ;)
