In HARP Sci Fi and SCI Fi Extreme that craft can link together or break apart to go through gates.
1) Does this "linkage" equipment take up a lot of space or mass?
2) I assume the equipment has to be built into the hull at the design phase and cannot be added to an existing hull. Correct?
3) Can linked craft enter Atmo or do they need to separate before entering Atmo for landing? Or does it depend on the craft design and mass/volume allocated to the linkage equipment?

Are you referring to the links in terms of batteries and such?

No I am referring to the ability to starships to split apart and reassemble themselves after going through a gate.

I do not have a page reference right off the top of my head. The idea is just talked about in the book and I bet it will be covered when the construction rules come out.
An example from modern culture would be the Enterprise from STtNG in which the saucer section separates from the drive section.

From the book I remember it saying that modular craft uncouple from one another and then the modules go through the gate.
But I had envisioned a support scout craft that was larger then the normal scout craft. The scout craft dock with the support ship and then can fly and maneuver from there.
I guess the best way to think of it would be a larger sub having 2 docking stations along its sides for smaller subs to doc at. The main sub can still proceed while the other subs are docked. Now take that idea into space and provide a way for the docked ships to be able to go through atmo and land upon a planet.

I would interpret this to be more like sending a Bridge Module, Engineering Module, Crew Module, Cargo Module, and 2 Weapons Modules through the gate. Once there while being protected by corvettes small enough to fit whole, smaller tender craft assemble the modules into a a capital ship far too large to fit through the gates limited dimensions.
This would allow invasion forces to use the gates even if their capital ships were somewhat less efficient due to the modularity of their design. Otherwise any invasion force would be looking at long hyperspace trips or attacking space stations and battleship/carrier analogs with PT boat/cutter analogs. Sure you can send 40 of them through to attack, but none of them are going to be terribly combat effective against the much larger vessels.

Boy I guess I am not over my Bronchitis yet as Pyrotec said what I was trying to say beautifully. I was just trying to adapt the system to larger vessels as a whole. Again sort of like the firefly shuttels sticking to the outside of a larger craft except in this case larger craft sticking to slightly larger craft.
