Question about leaping spell

Does it allow you to leap backwards? If casting leaping III (an instant spell) which allows you 3 leaps, how long does it take?

Direction is not specified, I don't see any reason why the subject cannot pick any direction to leap.

Somewhere in the books there's a comment about how it allows you to leap but that doesn't guarantee a safe landing. My party uses this spell a LOT, and I have them do a maneuver roll for their landing, based on the situation. If they tried to leap backwards, I would raise the difficulty.
We ask the hard questions here, because they keep us too busy to worry about the hard questions in the real world, and we can go with the answers we like the best.
