Apothecary applications (tinctures, salves and bears oh my!)
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:02:55 PM »
I've been tearing apart my RMSS books looking for a section of text regarding apothecary based uses for herbs that defines and describes salves, tinctures, ointments and what not.  Am I out of my mind, read it somewhere else thinking it was in an RMSS book or can I just plain not find it?  Anyone got some help for me?  I need it to flesh out an apothecary lab in an upcoming adventure.

Thanks in advance for any useful help!

I believe there was some of that in the old RM2 Alchemy Companion.   Nothing like that in any of the RMSS books.

I thought there was a section in the RMSS Essence Companion or the RMSS Mentalism Companion. I know the TP's in the Ment Comp do have a Physic {I think} TP that also deals with that stuff.
I will have more time to look if you do not find it Sunday.

That's what I thought too.  Didn't find it in a quick thumb through.   Hmmm...  Have to take a closer look.

Try looking at the "not rolemaster" product hands of the healer. It has many sugestions on many various things of that sort.

I need it to flesh out an apothecary lab in an upcoming adventure.

it shouldnt be that much different from an alchemists lab, just filled with more mundane flora and fauna. there are several websites on herbalism on the internet and im sure a search for homeopathy sites will help also....

I can't quote "Hands", but this would be a great way to have herbs prepared and ready to use!

A few drops under the tongue instead of a berry..
Salves and oils ready to go, in a nice little case, to rub on frostbite/sunburn/bleeding.

It might up the cost a bit, but anyone could use them; well some skill needed. :D
This could drastically change the Herb Economy in many regions. First, you'd have the supply of herbs, then transport (Anyone really looked how far away Jojojoppa really is?). Now, skill is needed to produce the stable little jars of "stuff", Finally, you have to distribute these..
Well, I guess, finally you'd have demand.  :)

Anyone seen the new quickclot? The powder doesn't have the thermal reaction, doesn't have to be cleaned/flushed out of wounds. I think it's made from powdered chitin (crustacean shells) and treated with acetone..? Oh, there is likely a special step involved along the way, but the company making it is keeping that hush hush.

Anyway, this is an example of what I'm thinking.

Yes HtH is an old'y and a goody if you can find it.

For more inspiration I would look on line for a chemical supply house for chemistry equipment and see just what is there that might fit your situation.

From my experience it would be:
1) Glass wear
2) Alcohol both gain, wood and maybe diluted
3) Acetone, some other basic chemicals.
4) Scales
5) Some way to provide constant heat, either from gas or maybe a water bath type idea.
6) Glass jars with solid chemicals in them, some metal jars, some ceramic jars, some jars sealed with wax and some with jell.
7) mortar and pestle, probably more than one
8) various screens with different size holes
9) normal water and purified water. Maybe a large water purification system in the room.
10) cool environment, generally.
11) Side room with lots of books and paper for notes and  researching stuff.
12) Microscope
13) Some type of fume hood, most likely water running through a constricted opening that pulls air with it.
14) drying area

Thats all I can think of right now.

I've got everything worked out for the most part.  I'm down to creating some "starter" recipes for different things.  Not to mention I just wanted to read that section of rules for inspiration.

Thanks for the links.  I'll have to check them out when I get a chance.  For now it's back to work (errr training.)

Please note that the short text of the same name that was linked earlier in this thread is only a small addendum to Hands of the healer and not the whole product.
