Opinions? Monk or Warrior-Monk with Mentalism, etc?
« on: June 28, 2020, 04:57:11 PM »
So for those who have played a bit.

Does a warrior-monk who dabbles in say the Anticipations (and a few other) spell list better off than a Monk with his base lists?

For example the Monk's Mind over Matter list is a definite boost for combat potential...but would you say that the Warrior-Monk have a similar progression based on skill alone (and wouldn't need to cast a spell)?

And for the example of Anticipations, I couldn't find anything that is equivalent to a +50 defense for a Monk at level 2. And if the Warrior-Monk could even double down on Adrenal Defense (albeit very spendy) every now and then.

But I would like to hear from folks who have actually played both and what was your experience?  In the long run do both professions perform equally well?  Or does the Monk lose a bit of offense in exchange for some versatility?  Can the Monk hold his own in the mid and later stages of the game?  Or would one be better off with a pure Fighter or Rogue (or other profession) instead?

I've just liked the concept of monks since my earliest FRP days.  The idea of a (more or less) self-sufficient character that can take several roles...even at the expense of not being the absolute best in a given specialization when compared to a character who opts to specialize (you can fight, but not as well as a fighter; scout but not as well as say a rogue, etc...)

Cheers!

Martial arts are very potent in RMSS/RMFRP. Probably both can do quite well for themselves. I expect the warrior monk will have the edge early on, but they will be more of a combat specialist. The monk will gain impossible maneuverability that will open up some roles a warrior monk can't access. But take that with a grain of salt, I played a nightblade and not a monk....

I'd second jdale's opinion. If you're after raw fighting power at lower levels, then go for the Warrior Monk plus the Anticipate Blow spell. The Monk might be more fun at higher levels, with his then greater flexibility.

Thanks for the insight.  My issue is in my experience while I like and build for long term term development...most games lose steam by level 5 :)
