Range of Missiles and Errata Possibility
« on: March 25, 2011, 02:44:36 PM »
Q1) The Errata states that missiles and range are handled the same as torpedoes and close 1 range bracket a round but what is the max range of a missile?

Q2) Also a problem arises with the combat resolution section that states you resolve missile attacks and the end of the round you fire them. So they travel for 1 round. Is that what was intended? That they have a range of 1?

That looks like a mistake in the errata.  Missiles are only supposed to travel for one round, I believe, as you stated.  So they would be treated just like non-torpedo weapons for the sake of range.

Since I had miniature-based space combat yanked away in the middle of the development process, all ranges in SM vehicle combat are subjective.

Yes this is a big bummer and IMHO shows in the document.

As per "range of missiles"; the book does not have any info about range for any weapons. IMHO this is part of the confusion of the OP.
Defendi; and info you can provide on "weapon, missile and torpedo" rangers would help a lot and should be added to the errata. Even if it is a quote from SM2 Armored Assault or SM2 Star Strike.
Thanks

What you are asking for would take a lot of design and playtesting.  I'm afraid that's not really practical right now.

Yeah, feel free to keep asking for stuff when you want though.  They aren't all big cans of worms, I'm sure.  :)

Part of the problem is that at the ranges used for space combat (at one point Silent Death was 1km hexes) most of the weapons have unlimited range.  Projectiles, missiles, and torpedos will certainly drift until they are drawn into a gravity well or collide with something with a sufficient mass and relative velocity to destroy them.  Beams can manage ranges measured in thousands of kilometers before their spot energy density expands to a harmless size.

Yes, Traveller and Starfire use ranges measured in hundreds of thousands of kilometers, but Spacemaster starship combat is a lot more starwarsy with most stuff happening at visual ranges.
