Shadow World / SW Spell List: Breath of Power
Last post by B Hanson - May 22, 2026, 06:47:48 PM
This is a spell list used by a group in Agyra. We just used it in gameplay so I thought I would put it up here.

Shadow World / Character Vocations Packages
Last post by B Hanson - May 22, 2026, 05:00:52 PM
Due to my new group of players, I was forced to finish this up after almost 10 years. These are our Vocations packages that replace the Apprenticeship Skill Pick when creating a new character. With these, players can put together a 1st level character in about 15 minutes!

I have another bunch of Shadow World specific vocations tied to cultures, but this tends to cover most everything.

You could also simply modify the crit roll up or down by a fraction of the attacker's ranks, in a way similar to ambush. To keep it from becoming a complete bloodbath, you would need a low conversion rate (say, 1 per 10 ranks, perhaps ?).

You could also use a (probably bigger) fraction of the difference between attacker's ranks and defender's ranks, but I think the skill difference has already been included in the OB vs DB allocation. A crit result means the attacker has found an opening. But some may argue that the defender's skill would reduce the effectiveness of that opening, so a fraction of the difference might be a interesting alternative, especially if, in case of a negative difference (so defender has more skill ranks), you allow *the defender* to modify the crit roll.

Another, potentially less random but less lethal, could be to use the #ranks (or the rank difference) as a floor : if the attacker scores a crit and has X ranks, the crit roll cannot be lower than X (or, if you use the rank difference, the crit roll cannot be lower than, say, 2*X or so). This does not increase the amount of lethal crits, but it ensures that the minimum effect of a crit will not go into the very disappointing very low range, thus increasing the staistically average effect of the crit. In this case, it would be unadvisable to use the rank difference to lower the ceiling of a crit roll if the difference is negative, because it would end up negating the chance of a lethal crit altogether for low crit severity (unless that's what you want as a GM).

The main drawback is that you have to guess the number of ranks for the monsters.
You also have to be careful with ranged attacks if you are using the rank difference: you don't have a defender's #ranks value (except for AD), which means that ranged attacks would end up being more lethal than melee attacks when performed by expert marksmen. Note that it *does* feel realistic...

But all in all, using expertise to modify the crit roll feels a bit redundant with the OB/DB allocation and the attack roll result: if the crit roll feels too random, perhaps it is because the tables themselves are too random for some play styles. And that's an issue no simple tweak can remedy, I fear.

Sorry for the necro, I just wanted to say that this last suggestion of more dice is a bad idea. The chances of getting a high or low result decrease the more dice you use. it would make skilled combatants worse.

Mindless talent has a cap on stat bonus of -4 for Em, In, Pr, Me and Re. Many creatures w/ Mindless have stat bonuses exceeding the limit. Did they buy Stat Bonus increases, was it from yet to be defined Archetype increases on stat bonuses or was that cap on those stats intended to be removed?

Likely needs clarification.

Rolemaster / Re: instantaneous spells

The wizard could cast their defensive spell in any phase but it's only going to help if they have done so before the attack is resolved.

If the attacker's initiative is earlier than the wizard's, and the attacker is resolving the attack in phase 2, then the only chance to cast that defensive spell would be in phase 1. The wizard cannot do a phase 2 action before the attack if the attacker's initiative is first.

You wrote as I thought it should be.

Reading this official ruling I had doubts.

QuoteThe question about the Phased Round is a similar but with a bit of a wrinkle. I don't think the rules for the Phased Round are as explicit that you can declare defensive actions if you lose initiative? So the question there becomes: can you use an instant action/spell in a defensive fashion in a Phase even if you lost initiative in that phase? E.g. It is Round 2, and an Orc wins initiative over you. He had an arrow nocked in Round 1 and looses it for a 1 AP ranged attack at you in Phase 1 of Round 2 (and at the top of the initiative order). Can you cast a Deflections (an instant spell) on it? (edited)Tuesday, May 12, 2026 9:40 PM

[10:17 PM]Tuesday, May 12, 2026 10:17 PMjdale: RAW, no, you can't, but since most attacks require more than 1 AP, you would be able to cast it after the attack has been started but before the attack is resolved. A 1 AP ranged attack (at -50) would be an exception to that (and surprise or conditional actions could end up creating other exceptions).

I think the answer should be yes; wizard can cast a defensive / instantaneous spell in phase 1 of first round; and no wizard can't cast a defensive / instantaneous spell in phase 2 if he lost initiatiative because instantaneous spell can't interrupt other actions.

Characters Do Not Get Passive Shield Ranks to DB versus Area Attacks (But They Do Get Base Shield DB if the Shield Arc is Between Center and Target)

Explained by JDale on Discord

Discussion

[9:29 AM] Sunday, May 17, 2026 Hurin: Do characters get passive Shield ranks to their DB versus Area Attacks? Core Law (p. 164) specifies that dodging does not apply, but shields do if their arc is between centre and target. So that's why I ask.

[6:06 PM]Sunday, May 17, 2026 PM jdale: Hmm. 9.3 suggests a shield applies (if appropriate facing), 9.6 doesn't list area attacks as a thing that shield DB counts against. I guess I would say base shield DB only, but it still counts as one of the attacks you are using your shield against for the round.

Gamers Seeking Gamers / HARP Fantasy Play-by-Post
Last post by Syrakull - May 17, 2026, 06:14:03 PM
We're trying to get a new HARP game going on rpol.net. So far we have one player (Elven Ranger) and a GM. The setting is still kind of open-ended and will come together as we go along. This is a low-level starter campaign so reply if you're interested!
