Title: Recover PP's in RMC?
Post by: thrud on May 19, 2007, 01:52:32 AM
Hi.
Where can I find the info on recovering used PP's in RMC?
The page number and book would be very helpful since the only reference I've found so far is the "caster gets xx pp's/day".

Spell Law Classic, page 25, First column, end of second paragraph, just above the header "Casting Requirements".

Some minor additional information can be found in the Meditation skill description in Spell Law Classic, on page 67.

Oki, thanks.
No way of recovering PP's by resting then... :/
I guess that notion was introduced in RMSS.

Resting, as in sleeping, or resting, as in low activity?

Resting as in low activity.

Nawp, not unless that low activity constitutes "meditation".

The answer would be you regain PP either through Meditation or Sleep ... only

I suppose it would be easy to house-rule it if the need arose.
RMSS would be a good place for inspiration.

Or you could be a high muckety muck in a church, and have loads of peons around with the channelling skill to "top you off" whenever you use some of your juice.

I can think of another couple of "esoteric" answers like that.

I try not to use words like "Only" in RM, since there are usually more loopholes than you can ever casually consider. (And if you get three RM GMs into one conversation you can usually come up with 5-6 exceptions to any rule, without delving into house rules.)

Yeah, I know what you mean.... and I got my answer to the original question.

Does anyone out there allow PP recovery for partial sleep? i.e. is it "8 hours sleep" or nothing?

I would definately allow partial sleep.

What kind of mechanic?

I would go with the three hours cycles from RMSS/FRP. This in my opinion makes sense as with three hours you are somewhat recovered while sleeping less usually only results in you being even weaker and more tired than before.

I suppose this question will split in two.
1. What's most realistic and anchored in reality?
2. What's most playable?

I would go with k.i.s.s.
Keep the minimum cycle to 1hr because it is simple.
Just divide the max pp's with the normal cycle and you get pp's/hr.
Easy and playable.

I dunno about 1 hour. . . .then again, depends on if it's a nap or sleep. (Like munchy, I find a 1 hour nap refreshing, but 1 hour of sleep worse than none at all.)

heheh. . .counter KISS. . .headings for "Napping" and "Sleeping". .

And then along come elves, who meditate for 4 hours instead of sleeping to mess all these calculations up...

 ;D

Meditation skill works for humans too. . . .Another "4hours" all or nothing scenario. Perhaps 1/4 PPs per hour spent meditating?

Actually there is a lot of interesting studies on sleep.
If you sleep for 30min or less you will feel refreshed but once you pass that 30min marker you go into deep sleep and will feel more tired when you awake. So, to eliminate the tired feeling you can nap, wake and do something, nap again, repeat and only feel refreshed after each nap.
The feeling is not an indicator of how good the rest is...
There was a military study that concluded that a person can survive on 4h of sleep per night but he needs to sleep no more than 4h or the body will develop a craving for more sleep and then the 4h/night will be insufficient.

Lots of fun stuff out there if you look for it.
I still feel 1h is a good enough time period.

I would say that you need deep sleep to refresh PPs and hits, the rest would just be napping and restore exhaustion points.

I use this system:
It takes half an hour before they sleep so deep that they get PP.
For every 2 hours of sleep they get 1/3 of their PP back.
However if they are awaken from sleep (to fight or false alarm or whatever) they need half an hour to fall asleep again and then they still need half an hour more (for one hour total) before the PP starts comming again.

This is the best compromise I have found between realism and playability.. and it gives me the option of ruining their sleep once in a while, if i need some tension in the game  ;D

It's not perfect and if somebody have a better system, please post it :)

No system is perfect but the one that works for you is a good one.

I stated on the RMSS/FRP thread Sleep Requirements for Elves:

In Dax's world:

No one will regain PPs (or hits) for sleeping !

Just for time:

The aura/the body can store an individuell quantity of PPs.
The Essaence is flowing at a constant amount through everything also the character.
If there is an active spell the flow (or part of it) maintains the spell effect, if not the
character gets the rate of PPs back (up to his normal maximum).
My vision of Essaence flow was developed for Level-PPs not for the new PP-Development with ranks.

There are some places where the flow might be different (nodes, anti-nodes, active area spells etc).
Or channeling user might get a higher rate at holy places.

It is the same for hits:
Your mind has to rest (REM sleep) not your body cells. The body is healing constantly.
If you rest (not moving) you heal more.

Sorloc distinguishes between the different realms:
In my world, the method you describe is true for Essence users; they regain 1/25th of their pp every hour.
Mentalism users (as most Elves are in Sorloc's world) regain PP by sleeping, resting or meditating.
Meditation: Sleep will reduce the amount of sleep needed for full restorative value.
Channelers must pray.

It should perhaps vary according to the realms. Clerics get no PPs back for sleeping they need to interact with their deity. Essence and Mentalists both draw the PPs from the environment, Mentalists from within themselves and Essense users from in and around. Hybrids obviously a mixture.

A cleric something hybrid could presumably get all the PPs from a source other than their deity but the deity may or may not be happy about that.

The mechanics of PP recharging. Why is sleep a requirement at all? Being immersed in the essence should do it. Obviously sleep is a good time to "soak" up all those lovely PPs being downtime so to speak. :)

I think is was the "ceremonies" list that had "Prayer" as the 1st level spell, which was actually a no PP cost spell that you needed to use to gain back PP. (At like 10 min per PP or something like that.)

You are close. You need to pray 5 min/lvl of caster according to the spell and it isnt free either.

hmm, what happens if you drop to 0 PP? heheh.

Well you could burn body points and take a stress critical. Plus of course you may have an ESF roll to overcome has a result of burning off all your intrinsic PPts.

Ask a follow priest to Channel you alittle or even from your god?

You could ask your god, but watch out for burnout, ;)

But if you are asking for 1 PP to use for the spell "Prayer" from your God, why doesnt he just Channel all the PP you need that day or why not just ask for the that amount to begin with? ;) Which is why you would probably ask a fellow Channeler

This kind of procedure certainly makes the relationship a lot more like you'd expect, with the caster merely a vessel containing the power of another. . .the core method always makes me think in terms of a divine credit card. "Zeus just increased my limit to 100 PP!"

I have seen this mechanic result in rather amusing methods though. . .like a monestary full of monks who pray to full, then channel to the clerics, then go back to praying. . .all day long. . .sort of like a religious power plant.
