ICE News and Discussion / Re: Director's Briefing - June...
Last post by tallfoolvictor - June 11, 2026, 12:19:37 PM
Thanks Nicholas,
I run a HARP fantasy game with a couple of friends so I appreciate the update regarding Something Wicked Something Wonderous.  In an ironic twist my players are not running characters that focus on spell casting even though I feel it is one of the game's biggest strengths.
I seem to be a hoarder when it comes to ICE products but every new book (HARP & RMU) has some new concepts.  I don't see myself running a Steampunk game (at least not at the moment) but I like the ideas and the attention to detail in it.
Keep up the great work!

Welcome

To the one hundred-and-seventy-ninth Briefing and sixth scheduled Briefing of 2026.

Conventions

Gen Con approaches, which means that the great restocking order is now being made, to replenish the Rolemaster and HARP titles that have went out of stock or too low in stock.
I am reliably informed that Bob Morris is scheduled to run four HARP sessions at Gen Con.

Software

Bob also reports that, thanks to the beta group, there are now (partial) French, Spanish and Swedish translations to the system's user interface and compendium folders. Bob has been working on enhancing the spellcasting workflow and Area of Effect template placing.

HARP

The softcover and hardcover print masters for HARP Steampunk have made it safely through the DriveThru and the Lightning Source processes. The softcover and the hardcover have now arrived with me and I am happy that the proofs are both good.

On HARP Something Wicked Something Wondrous. I have worked up eleven spell concepts and decided to cut eight concepts as not working out. At least another fifteen concepts to consider.

Rolemaster

In an unexpected twist, we received a draft adventure module, Shadows of a Splintered Past, which has been tried and tested at previous Gen Cons. This was designed for Rolemaster Unified. While we commission some modest number of new illustrations for this, we have asked the author to add in HARP stats to maximise its reach.

I have seen a draft of the cover art for RMU Character Companion and it is stunning. Layout is well advanced.

Until next time

Please stay safe and keep gaming.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

Just to clarify, the idea of using a clotting spell to treat clotting is that you are using Spell Mastery to invert the effect. Not that you are causing additional clotting. Since this the spell most closely associated with controlling blood flow.

What Heals a Blood Clot?

You can do an Extremely Hard (-30) Spell Mastery maneuver on a Clotting-type spell to reverse the clot. If that fails, you can always heal the organ affected by the clot.

Tuesday, June 09, 2026 8:15 PM Hurin: Question about the RAW: what heals a blood clot?

This question has come up a few times so sorry if I am repetitive, but I just want to know what the basic rule is. Many criticals result in death due to a clot. But the rules don't seem to say what sort of wound this is, or precisely how to heal it.

Laendra also noted the spell 'Clotting Curse' on Evil Channeling: Curses, that says it is an 'Extremely Hard' Medicine maneuver to prevent the loss of a limb with a clot, and that a Joining spell will also work to prevent the loss of a limb... but some of the clots are in the torso and so obviously Joining isn't going to work on them.

So... what heals a clot?

Tuesday, June 09, 2026 9:06 PM JDale: Ok, clotting, hmm. In principle a clot cuts off blood flow to a specific area. In the case of Clotting Curse, it's localized in one spot, so the idea would be that you are somehow breaking it up. Since the procedure listed in the spell is only 1d10 rounds, that must not be surgery, and not anticoagulant drugs, so probably you are managing to somehow massage the blood vessel to physically break up the clot.

But in the criticals, usually the idea is that the clot is forming in some part of the body and then migrating typically to the brain where it causes a fatal stroke. Since it's not localized until it reaches the brain, there might not be a lot of symptoms while it's on the way, and it might make more sense to just think of it as having a stroke. Strokes aren't instantly fatal, either, so the idea that it gets to the brain relatively quickly and then the symptoms are stroke symptoms -- disrupted coordination, loss of balance, vision issues, localized or unilateral numbness/weakness, confusion, headache, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, etc. In game mechanics terms, the victim is probably Stunned etc.

Using a clotting-type spell makes sense, depends how hard you want it to be to treat. Stopping a fatal critical with a 2nd level spell is generous, but maybe Extremely Hard (-30) spell mastery? The alternative would be a spell to treat nerve/organ damage to fix the problem once it is in the brain. That ought to work without the need for spell mastery.

You also need to be able to recognize the problem, in order to know to do one of those things (although the Diagnosis spell will just tell you right away). I think that should get progressively easier as the victim gets closer to dying. Maybe Extremely Hard to begin with, Medium within a few rounds of death. Partial success recognizes there is a serious problem, but does not identify it.

If you're stealing by palming things, that's Trickery.

If you're stealing by going into a store and hiding things out of your person when you're out of view, that could be Concealment to hide the thing, and maybe Stalking to get the opportunity to do so (although you could also achieve that for example by having an accomplice distract the storekeeper).

I would generally ask the player how they want to accomplish the theft and explain how their skill applies. There's often more than one valid answer.

There is a list of every RMSS/RMFRP skill and its RMU equivalent in https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/562285/shadow-world-rolemaster-unified-conversion-guide which is a free download.

For gambling, it says:

For a purely luck-based game, just roll the dice. When cheating, use Trickery (opposed by Perception). For a game with a heavy social or psychological aspect (e.g., poker), use Acting, Influence, and/or Social Awareness. For a game that is random but odds-based (e.g., Roulette), Mathematics might be applicable. For a very complex game with elaborate rules or strategy, treat it as a Vocation.

Ranged: Thrown is interesting for throwing dice, but I think Trickery is a better match still. Thrown might be usable as a similar skill though, or complementary skill.

RMC/RM2 / New YouTube 20 part Series - H...
Last post by Horrors & Heroes - June 09, 2026, 02:44:11 PM
I've just started a new 20 part video series: How to Play Rolemaster Classic.
The aim is to walk through RMC/RM2 step by step, using the rules as written, with (almost) no optional rules and no house rules. I'm hoping the series will be useful for new players, returning players, and GMs who want something clear they can point people toward when introducing the system.

Episode 01 is an introduction: what Rolemaster Classic is, why it has the reputation it does, what makes it worth playing, and how the series will approach the rules.

Rolemaster has always had one of the best fantasy RPG engines out there: open-ended rolls, detailed characters, brutal combat, and those glorious critical tables. I'd love this series to help more people discover it, or rediscover it.

I hope you find it worthwhile — and if you think it would be useful to others, I'd be very grateful if you helped spread the word.

Noticed that I hadn't properly formatted a lot of the fillable areas in the first Character Sheet.

Now it should be properly formatted and more easy on the eye.
