Help needed:forgotten monster name.
« on: January 03, 2019, 12:44:05 PM »
I am writing a series of adventures for beginner characters.

I have half a memory of some sort of very weak elemental monster that I think would be suitable to cause havoc during docking a ship in the middle of a storm on a dark winters day.

Can anyone else remember such a creature, I would swear that it was 1st to 3rd level, no higher.

Are you thinking of Servants? They're listed at 5th level in C&T, but could easily vary down to 3, maybe 1.

We ask the hard questions here, because they keep us too busy to worry about the hard questions in the real world, and we can go with the answers we like the best.

There are Whispling Elementals (p.96 in Elemental Companion) that are the right level, but I don't think their description fits what you're looking for either, Peter.  A Water Zephyr Hound is listed as level 4D in EC (p.98 - 100) & might fit more with what you're looking for.  You could always level them down to fit the power level you're looking for.

The water zephyr hound is currently occupying that slot in the adventure. I will have a look at the Whispling. Didn't they come up recently in a different thread for having something scary like eight attacks a round?

I dimly remember that conversation, but can't remember the details. I thought it was in the context of a discussion of summoning spells being potentially overpowered, so perhaps it was mentioned in this thread: http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=16675.40

I looked over the description of the slight elementals in RMU Creature Law, though, and didn't see anything about multiple attacks (though the immolation might be a threat). Perhaps the multiple attacks was in Elemental Companion or something like that? If so, that issue seems to have been corrected in RMU.

Light whisplings in Fire & Ice get 4 attacks (at +5), other types get fewer. You would probably want a water whispling, their attack is one +15 small bash or +30 small grapple. Level 1A, size small, move 80, hits 20, AT (DB) 3 (50). Does not seem excessively threatening.

The slight water elemental in RMU CrL is a little more powerful, although not tremendously so.

Thank you all.

Although the whispling from my memory of the other thread did sound like the right creature it is not a stock monster in RMU so it is off limits. I am writing a collection of adventures for characters level 1-5th playable in all versions of RM including RMU. No whisplings in CrL so they are off limits.

On the other hand, the water zephyr hound did not quite fit in scene but I fixed that by keeping the hound but rewriting the scene. The characters get to fight one, the alpha male, on the deck of the ship while the rest of a pack circle it in the storm.

It feels like this third draft is actually the best so there is a net gain anyway.

Geeze, I go on vacation for two weeks and I miss the only post on Elementalism!

Elemental Companion will have a ton of creatures to choose from. :)  You could use water, air, wind, cold elements too, not simply water.
