Eidolonstudio.com web site
« on: April 29, 2012, 07:06:33 AM »
Just a warning about my site, Eidolonstudio.com. I know it's been a bit of an erratic construct over the years. Certainly there were a lot of ideas that I wish I could have explored further (like the living Sel-kai updates). But to the point, Apple is shutting down their MobileMe service, which I have been using to host my site, at the end of May. I am disappointed, because it was so easy to use, and I also used their space as a remote backup for files. What they are replacing it with is not nearly as useful to me. I still own the 'Eidolonstudio.com' domain name, but according to Apple, the rest of the site will go down because that is where the pages and links are located. So, if anyone has any suggestions for a very user-friendly, Mac-friendly web hosting service, please let me know. More details as things develop. -- TKA

I say, just go with Squarespace, from what I've seen it's the easiest thing in the world. Heck, you can even try it out for free.

I believe Squarespace is using Amazon as it's actual provider as well. They just add a layer of usability on it.

Just a reminder: Apple Inc., which has been happily taking my money for years and allowing me to host my EidolonStudio site conveniently under their MobileMe feature (which also allowed convenient scheduled 'cloud' cloning of any files I liked through 'Backup') is killing the service in favor of their new iCloud as of July 1. iCloud is not only far more restrictive as far as what you can save to it (they are trying to push people towards their apps, so I can't even continue to save my Word files the way I like), but it requires OS 10.7, which no longer includes the Rosetta emulator, which allows me to run older PPC apps that I need.

Sorry for all the technical stuff. But the point is, my site will be down for awhile at least, but it will be back in one form or another. Details to follow.

Have you considered Dropbox as an interim file hosting service?

Dropbox might be a solution to store the files while you explore the possibilities.

Nowadays, a lot of webservice/hosting providers have lots of offers, depending on the degree of control you need/want ( it goes from a box with an os, up to you to set up the rest to a complete website design from various templates ).

The only problem is that there's so many offers and they are all just a little bit different from each other...

Thanks all, I'll look into the options. Problem is, I think I set up a lot of the pages as 'absolute' links rather than relative ones (which for some reason seemed wise at the time) so they would all link back to my apple server. Therefore, I need to go in and do some basic HTML rebuilding. And at the least, Shadowstone is down, because I'm cleaning it up as a real novel (yay!).

Yes that's my plan, that the e-book will be available at Amazon and other outlets, depending on their terms.

oooooh,

I'm not a great fan of e-books ( I really prefer reading dead tree versions ), but I will definitely bend a bit if the Shadowstone comes in that format.

eidolonstudio.com is officially back online! It's much more compact right now, but at least stylistically consistent. I'll be adding more as time goes on.
