Types of Instants
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:27:54 AM »
I am posting the Instants that I know (off the top of my head) and would like to see if you have any that I missed.
Types of Instant Spells
1) Instant-Attack Spells: Spells that Mod Attacks in some way.
2) Instant-Defense Spells: Spells that Mod the casters/targets defense in some way.
3) Instant-Movement Spells: Landing and Leaping etc.
4) Instant-Healing Spells: Stun Removal, sub-con healing, etc
5) Spells Released at Instant speeds do to Spell Store Items: Stored spells in Mage Staff, item of Spell Storing, etc.
6) Psionic Powers: All Psi abilities are at instant speeds.

Did I miss any? Or can you think of any others?
Thanks

Don't know if it would qualify for your list, but I have always ruled that spells, regardless, cast by deities are "instant".

I can see that or maybe as you advance in levels you cast spells faster and deities have a different progression than others do.

Do Symbols, Wards, Circles, and/or Glyphs release as an Instant spell?

I forgot about those so ... Thanks a lot!
I think I will treat those as triggered effects and have them be different than stored spells. If I can get the reasoning as to why they should be different from spell store devices. Maybe classify them as Instant Attack: spells to get around the idea that I want stored spells to have a longer release time than other "instant" spells. This does mean some reclassification of spell in SL.
Thanks

Call Symbols, Wards, Circles, Glyphs as "Instant Triggered" and the others as "Instant Stored."

Could also call the stored spells as "Instant Called."

Just some thoughts.

I cant see that you missed any, BUT you might want to redefine your Instant Movement spells :)

Yes they are instant spells, but are the movement they argument also instant in your game? Do you leap in the same second you cast a leap spell (Which in RM2 would allow you to make a movement action in the spell phase) or is the spell itself instantanious while the actual action is performed later (Again in RM2, that would be in the movement phase)?
This is the system that I normally use, since allowing the instant action spells to take effect immidiately will give too much power to these low level spells. (You can leap right up to or behind a archer to stop him from using the bow or simply leap to full cover)

Ofcause there is other instant movement spells, that leave no doubt about this (Leaving, long Door, teleport ect.)
I'm new here, but have played RM2 on and off for 20 years. :)

Thanks Balhirath,
I think I will rule that Instant Movement Spells take effect immediately but the movement as you said takes some time to happen.
I am going to be doing a test soon with a simplified combat system which is close to Classic Battletec and others, so yes the movement is going to be first and then the other actions follow. So  if a movement spell is cast after movement then it will take effect the next round.
But I can see that that is one area that I will have to be careful of during the test.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments.
