Spacemaster / RMFRP compatibility
« on: February 11, 2009, 12:14:08 PM »
Hi all

I have invested a LOT of time and money into the RMFRP (and RMSS fantasy companion books that weren't reprinted for RMFRP - yup, even the Essence companion (but no the present day rules like firearms)) and I'm only down 3 RMFRP books that will be purchased next month to complete the set.

I really like Sci-Fi as well as fantasy and am thinking of grabbing the Spacemaster value pack 1 and 2. I'm happy to spend some money for the SM system but the time factor is more of an issue.

Is Spacemaster similar to the RMFRP system - but with specific rules for Sci-Fi or does it rewrite the whole thing?

Is it a case of learning everything from scratch again or does it share the same snap, normal and deliberate phase to a round and skills like perception/awareness, stalking, all other movement/manoeuvre skills of instance?

Thanks.

Craggles,
Space Master Privateers [SMP] is an extension of RMSS/FRP and can played without a lot of new rule's. There is a new way to handle Psionics as well as rules for energy weapons and firearms. In fact I use RMSS Arms Law: Firearms [AL:F] with SM:P as it has more options for firearms than the rules for SM:P. Those are the two things that jump out at me as the big difference between RMSS and SM:P.

Yes the skills ard combat use the same framework as RMSS/FRP.

I have often used SM:P Psionics in a fantasy setting and it has worked well.

If you have any other questions please post them and I will answer to the best of my ability.

One other point: I have found that I like the SM2's detalied starship and vehicle rules better than the rules in SM:P. But you can adapt the SM2 Armored Assault and Star Strike to SM:P with a little work and modifications to the rules.

I wrote it to be an RMSS supplement originally.  It expands and adds things (like firearm actions in combat and android crits and psionics), but it shouldn't change anything from the core RMSS/RMFRP.

That is excellent news! I'm not sure my brain would have been able to cope with a totally different set of rules. :)

Now that we have RMC, is Spacemaster going to be re-written to conform to those rules or do I have a bit of time spare before the current set is shelved - like the RMSS companion book had been (making the Arcane and Essence companions difficult to get hold of).

I don't know of any firm plans for a SMC.

Thanks! I don't need to rush too much then.  ;D

First order of business is to complete the RMFRP set before they disappear.

craggles,
IMO I was very lucky to get a whole bunch of my physical RM and SM books in their various flavors. But I also have loved my PDF files as I can take them any where and print out stuff as I need it. IMO it might be just as good to have instead of buying $ physical copies. But then again the economy is struggling and this would be the time to buy game stuff.

Have Fun

Hi Mark

I would agree with you and many years ago, I'd originally bought many of the RMFRP books in PDF format (mainly due to the UK shipping rates of the books) but annoyingly, I've been suffering heavily with Migraines and cluster headaches quite badly in recent years and I've found the printed page easier on my eyes (and hence on my head too).

Now that I think I've grasped many of the rules for RMFRP, printing a few pages here and there for clarification/reference wouldn't be a problem but I did start out trying to print the entire PDFs so I could read them easier. ...and I got it wrong - I printed all the odd pages and then even pages so I could back them up and through not concentrating on it, I've managed to get the right hand pages on the left and vice versa. I only noticed AFTER I'd printed out the FRP, Character Law and Gamesmaster Law. :P  Trying to staple that many pages was a big problem too.  :D

I find it easier to flick through a book to get to the place I was (by recognising the pages as it's flicking) as opposed to a PDF. I remember a time where there was a call for a 'paper-less office' and I embraced it whole heartedly ...until my head rebelled.  :-\

I'm glad the books are available in PDF format (particularly for shipping rates) and I love the fact you can buy the PDFs bundle along with the physical book although I think 'half price' is still a little much. It'd be great if you got the PDFs free with the relevant bundles.  ;)
Although realistically, I'd certainly be prepared to pay 25% without hesitation for the PDFs when buying the book bundles.
Otherwise, I'd prefer the option of buying the PDFs at a later date (but at the discounted bundle price) if I'd purchased the book bundle previously, as I'd want to evaluate the printed version first.

But first, RMFRP needs to be collected before RMC kills it totally  :)

craggles;
I know how a poor monitor can affect you. Now I always wait until I have saved up enough money to buy a larger, better color, better refresh rates, etc LCD or picture tube.
