The Glen Cook Black Company books are outstanding.  I "borrowed" that setting for my very first RM campaign on my first outing as a GM. Ah the memories....

Same here. The Dominator still rules over one nation. I took the Taken, married them to Nagul stats from Lords of Middle Earth (great supplements btw!), and went from there.

FYI - In case you were not aware, Green Ronin produced the Black Company setting for d20.  If memory serves me correctly, it shouldn't be too difficult to morph into RM or HARP.

Unfortunately, it is no longer for sale at GR or RPGNow, so you'll have a bit of challenge to get it.

Did they leave one on your lawn Old Man? ;)

For me I've pulled ideas (relating to fantasy) from...

LotR (dur!)
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
Steven Brust's Khaavren and Vlad series (To Reign in Hell was good too).
Katherine Kerr's Deverry series.
Fred Sabberhagen's Book of Swords series.
Robert Asprin's "Myth" series (comedy).
David Eddings Elenium series.
- Cory Magel

Game design priority: Fun > Balance > Realism (greater than > less than).
(Channeling Companion, RMQ 1 & 2, and various Guild Companion articles author).

+Infinity. (Not surprising with my "handle", though huh?!?)
