I think there should be a diplomat profession. Especially for a space opera setting.
Thanks

Two questions --
1) Is there another profession that can handle it if the right options are selected?
2) If the answer to #1 is no, then is Diplomat unique enough to warrant a whole new profession, or would it be better handled as a training package?

I see Diplomat as being doable with Dilettante - though, it is a common archetype not presented in the book.
However, the way I see it, it's mostly a grouping of the Influence skills - a Training Package probably would do the job far better than a new Profession would.
Also: how would political skills be arranged? Lore: [xian] Politics would fit for knowing about the politics, but what about current situation? How about political maneuvering? Vocation: Politician might fit there. Vocation: Political Servant would work for some other bits.

I personally think it is unique enough.
You might use Dilettante or Entertainer with a training package.
I need to look over training packages more closely to be sure.

Rename Merchant to the more generic name of Communicator.
Replace description with:
Communicators focus on social interaction as diplomats, linguists, missionaries, politicians or traders. They are the experts in persuasion, explicit and implicit, and are equally comfortable in dealing with individuals and groups.
Leave Favored Categories (*), Key Stats, and Professional Abilities as is.
(*) One possible tweak might be to swap out one of Scientific, Subterfuge or Vehicular for Artistic.
Use the Xenodiplomat TP as well.
Best wishes,
Nicholas
