Title: Large & Super-Large vehicles?
Post by: DeadBob on November 28, 2010, 07:04:59 PM
SM: Privateers

What makes a vehicle (I assume only space vehicles) Large and/or Super-Large for the crit tables?

In the pre-made ships, only one, the Goliath Heavy Freighter, makes use of this and takes Large vehicle crits at 200,000 tons and CAT VII

Is it simlpy size or is it a combination of size and armor type (which would really make more sense)?

For the most part size, although like a rolemaster monster, you could certainly use the tables to represent a ship that is particularly durable.  I wouldn't suggest that as the norm, however.  The CAT is handled by the attack tables themselves.  The critical tables are meant to represent how much you have to pound on the ship, after you've punctured the armor, before it starts to break, and that's usually a matter of volume and mass.

On page 48 of the SM:P VM it has a table that describes Missile Salvo's and gives mass cut-off's for salvo MK#'s. IMHO the bottom number is for SL and the mass above it should be for L.

I had not thought of using that chart for a guideline, thanks!

Though, I'll likely make a mini-chart to adjust for CAT just a little. I don't see a CT XI ship at 100,000 tons (which would have to be a a near-zero-thrust station) and a CAT XX shi at the same mass both requiring the same "beatage"

I have things to think about. When I make that mini-chart, I'll share it here.
Don't want to be only a taker!

I know others will like anything you post and you might want to submit it to the Guild Companion as they are always looking out of articles.

I had the same problem before as I was looking for the Min Mass for Large and Super Large Crits. I believe it was defendi that proposed using the chart to get the masses.
