Acc of SM:P Warships
« on: February 26, 2011, 10:14:33 PM »
I was wondering if anyone had created some larger ships and if they did it buy class or designation what their G's profile was?

So for example from the book SM:P VM Gunboats have G's from aprox. 9-14 and Data Net 1 has Carriers G's at aprox. 2 ISC and 1 Empire.

Thanks

That's a tricky one, in vacuum there's no real reason bigger vessels would be slower or less maneuverable it's just a design feature.  The only real obstacles would be that ships tend to carry maintainance crews while fighters don't and ships are longer ranged / carrying more supplies.

Hmm, it depends on if there's a sweat spot in the mechanics of engines. . . if engines get more efficient the larger they are, then you end up with large ships being faster and more maneuverable than small ships. . .if engines have a sweet spot of efficiency at a particular mass, then ships exactly that size will be the fastest.

Yeah but then they just use different engines for different jobs.  Still, there's not really a need for a captital ship to be faster than a fighter.

The choice tends to determine the type of sci fi you get. . .with the "bigger = more efficient" you get Star Trek, with "Smaller = More efficient" you get Star Wars.

I've always liked the Star Fleet Battles interpretation where Star Trek the original series is essentially World War I and later periods see fighter and carrier tactics dominating as advances make the efficient drives smaller.
