Cyradon pronounciations
« on: May 14, 2008, 01:11:50 PM »
Is there any place where the proper names used in GW, like "Cyradon", are expressed phonetically?  I mean, is it "sih-rah-dahn" or "k-eye-ray-dun" or ... ?

Well, unless it really, really matters, the words are pronounced the way the GM says they are!!
Otherwise, no, I do not know of any pronunciation guide to Cyradon.

Cyradon is pronounced "Sere - ah - don"

But other than that, no, there isn't a pronunciation guide.

I imagine most of us Americans will be pronouncing it Seer-uh-din, regardless of how it's supposed to be pronounced.  After TSR cancelled the Greyhawk line I started work on the homebrew I've used ever since.  I made sure the "official" way to say names was the way I assumed everyone would end up saying it anyway.  It was the lazy way out I admit but it saved a lot of time in the long run.

I've been pronouncing Cyradon the way Rasyr said.  The word that's giving me trouble is Stionoir.  I've been using "Stee-Oh-nwar", but I don't know if that's right.

I must be a bit dyslexic and not know it... I always prodnounced it "CRY-A-DON".

Interesting.  I'd been pronouncing it Shtee-Nwah.  Linguistics is such an interesting area of study; especially phonemes.

Thanks for the feedback.

As I talk about GW with my friends I run into the different pronunciations for many words.  I just wondered if a guide existed.

Cheers,
John

I did too until the group I joined politely informed me that I was wrong and that I had a few of the letters backwards...

Of course, since I'm teaching myself Welsh, I started to see it as "kuh-rah-DON" instead of the official pronunciation...
I'm being extremely clever up here and there's no one to stand around looking impressed! What's the point in having you all?
