Spell Mastery vs Std Spell Modification penalties?
« on: October 21, 2007, 06:37:07 PM »

Hey everyone,

Do you allow casters to use Spell Mastery to attempt to buy off/mitigate the penalties in table T-4.6? For example No Free Hand penalties? If so, anyone have some rules-of-thumb for the minuses to the static action?

Ciao,
Old Man

No, I never have.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

No, we only allow Spell Mastery for the modifications given in the rules or for alterations of the spell effect (e.g. creating an Earth Wall with an arrow-slit in the middle).

No, I never allowed that.
I suppose a magician might, he admitted, but a gentleman never could.

No, in RMFRP or RMSS the spell list bonus is used for that purpose.

"Spell list bonus?" How would that translate into RM2? BAR?

Thanks,

I think there is no equivalent for this in the RM2 rules. When not meeting the normal Spell Casting Requirements, RM2 only has the option to use ESF rolls. But for these there is no skill to develop.

No, I have considered it but overcasting works well without it in RMFRP

No.  I think the standard +50 already given to that table is more than adequate under most cases.

In the case of RM2 ESF rolls are used, but you have rules about that in Spell Law book.
