Layperson Heroes Adventures
« on: September 24, 2018, 05:28:36 PM »
Thanks to Folkways, I was thinking about heroes who aren't necessarily the ones who've trained to be heroes their whole early lives, but the peasants, royal attendants, and privateers. So far, the only advice on "average" people is to roll their stats as 40+2d10 per stat, and I've been thinking of a point buy method for "lesser" heroes but haven't come up with something I'm sure of yet, other than that they can eventually reach adventurer status.

I was thinking of limiting it to the Folkways professions to start as well. This isn't the king or local lord saying "X happened, I need you brave people to fix it" and more "X happened in your town, five minutes ago, what are you going to do?"

Yes, well and verily a Peasant's Quest.

Character creation is the only bit of HARP I know in any detail. If you went for something like all stats start at 50 plus 20pts to spend you would get fair amount variations between characters. Players could still buy down stats to buy up stats they want to emphasise.

I had calculated something by an assumed average roll and then based the points on how much that value times 8 would be in points. That value wasn't much less than standard player characters using point buy.

Another thought was either halving Flat DP, but still doubling at 1st level.

The "layperson" professions in Folkways are meant to be "equal" with the normal adventuring professions. Give the characters the full Flat DP and use normal stat generation. Halving DPs etc will make the peasant PCs too weak (they will already be spending more DPs on lay skills).

Best wishes,
Nicholas
