6503 - RMC Spell Law Errata
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:18:27 PM »
[errata=
How many spell lists may I learn per level and how does that work?]
According to the Core Rules, you may learn up to 2 lists per level maximum. However, the following applies:
  • You may only learn one portion of a list at a time.

  • If your first attempt in a given level is successful, you may attempt to learn a second spell list portion (on a different list, or a higher portion of the list just learned). The core rules do not put any limitations on the number of ranks that must be purchased to allow this.

  • If your first attempt in a given level is unsuccessful, you may attempt to learn a second (different) spell list portion (on a different list than the first, but doing so loses the ranks in the first spell list portion attempted.

  • If you first attempt is unsuccessful, you may purchase more ranks in the same portion, but only if you can bring your total up to 20 ranks, which means you may learn the list automatically.

  • If you purchase 20 ranks in a list, you automatically learn that portion of the spell list (no roll required), and may start purchasing ranks on a second list portion.

  • Although it is not explicitly and clearly stated in the rule, a character may only purchase ranks in 2 different list portions per level. The core rules do say that only one list may be learned, and then it says that there is an exception. However, the way that the exceptions are worded, the character is allowed to attempt to learn a second list portion regardless of the outcome of the attempt to learn the first list portion.

  • Each block of development points is considered a separate "level" for the purpose of learning spell lists. Just as each block of development points also counts separately for how many ranks may be purchased in a given skill. This means that Adolescent and Apprenticeship are fully considered to be separate levels for the learning of spell lists.

Situation: Joe is playing a Magicain and has 40 DPs and just made 2nd Level.

Example 1: Joe buys 5 ranks in Fire Law (first list this level). He successfully rolls his SLA and learns that portion. He may now attempt to learn a second portion. There are only 3 possible outcomes

   1. He succeeds and he is done buy spells for the level.
   2. He fails and then decides to buy 15 more ranks to make sure he learns it. If he cannot buy all 15, then he cannot buy any.
   3. He fails and decides to wait until next level to try again to learn that portion.

Example 2: Joe buys 5 ranks in Fire Law (first list this level). He fails his SLA roll. That leaves him with only 3 choices.

   1. Buy enough ranks to give him 20 and allow him to still learn the list, then begin his attempt to learn a second list portion.
   2. Abandon those ranks (and the DP spent on them) and begin trying to learn a second list.
   3. Wait until the next level, and do not attempt to learn a second list this level.

Is the casting of a subconscious spell a free action?]
No, a character is required to spend as much activity casting a subconscious spell as they would if they were casting the spell normally, not including preparation rounds.

May a Utility Spell be cast on a sleeping or unconscious target?]
The short answer is no, it may not.

The target of a Utility spell must make a explicit, conscious decision to accept a spell from the caster in order for it to have any chance of succeeding. And that means that the target must be conscious and capable of making such a decision.

Note: RMSS/FRP has Errata concerning the classification of certain spells from Utility to Healing.

FAQ Elemental vs Deamon Level Compairason]
In the Spell Law p 82 the table for Entities gives the levels and types of demons/elementals.
The ratio is:
Type I: level 1-2 (elemental servants)
Type II: Level 3-5 (weak elemental)
Type III: level 6-10 (guardian elemental)
Type IV: level 11-15 (strong elemental)
Type V: level 16-20
Type VI: level 21-40
Type VII: level 41-100+

But in CT the levels for elementals are:
elemental servants: level 5
weak elementals: level 10
guardian elementals: level 15
strong elementals: level 20

Can You explain this?
Tank IOU!!

Answer by Rasyr:
The table has nothing to do with an Elemental's actual level.

If you summon an elemental, a demon, or any other monster/creature/spirit/etc. you have to roll on the table on the top of page 83, adding in 10 for each Demon Type (or equivalent).

What this means is that the table does not give the elemental's level, it gives its equivalence to the different Demon Types.

Thus, if a character summons a Guardian Elemental and does not cast the proper Control/Master spell, the player makes a roll and adds 30 (Guardian Elemental == Demon Type III for this purpose).

If the object of the summoning is not an elemental or a demon, then you use the middle column of the table.

I'm stunned, after rereading Spell Law (the Classic version), I found out that we wrongly interpreted the rules for the last 15 years :D

However I would like to double-check, to be sure that these are not small "bugs", which went into the Rolemaster Classic version ;)

1) BCR (SL 4.1, page 37):
"...makes a 1-100 BCR adding in any level bonuses:
<...>
If the BCR is 01-02, the spell fails."

The BCR fails on a 01-02 UM
