RMC/RM2 / Question about summons
Last post by alloowishus - Today at 08:21:28 PM
It says that the caster can instantly summon a non-intelligent creature. Does that mean they can control it's actions? Or does it just show up and they have to use other spells/skills to control it?

Let us know if you ever find it. I'd be interested in hearing about that too.

Aye! A community content program for HARP (and HARP SF) would be great!

Once upon a time, there was a thing called Battlemaster made for HARP. Can't see it anywhere in the current catalogue.

It used hex grids, added some nuance to weapons and reach (and possibly other things). I'm not sure how well it worked. I never tested it, my players preferred TotM and drawing of maps, generally not to scale.

General Discussion / 32 year long Silent Death Mini...
Last post by juxstapo - December 03, 2025, 11:12:21 PM
It would seem thtat it is very difficult to find anywhere to ask questions about Silent Death.

If anyone can help me, I want.... I need to know about a miniature for a Single Ship.

When I was a wee sprog, far too wee to appreciate tabletop gaming, the one game store near me closed down.
This meant nothing to be at the time, but the follow on effect was that lots of leftover miniature stock wound up in my mom's favorite thrift store, so I got my hands on a stream of early Ral Partha Battlemechs and some Forgotten Realms characters, things like that.

One particular treasure, buried under the piled, cluttered shelves of this thrift store, was a Silent Death box with most of the miniatures in it, the rulebook, maps, and a copy of the expansion: Black Guard.
I didn't have the appropriate dice or anyone to play it with (although I did futz around with my collection of D6s, 8 year old me wasn't canny or patient enough to make that work); but I got tons of value out of the spaceships. I still have a few poorly painted Pit Vipers somewhere... But for some reason I fell in love with the black ship on the cover of the expansion book:

The books "Starcraft Inventory" tells me the thing is called a Talon:

And hope against hope, there is an order form in the back of the book for miniature ships.

You guys recall what it was like (as a small, idiot child?) getting niche gaming stuff before the internet? And with no hobby shops or game stores nearby? In my tiny hometown what was considered a "hobby shop" sold ammunition and bait.
So kid me scraped up the $6-ish for the ship, then the $2-ish for shipping... then the frankly unfair-feeling $1 to purchase a money order... then wheedled a trip into town with my dad to purchase said money order, fill out the order form from the back of the expansion, put the whole thing in an envelope (more money for a stamp), drop it off at the post office... and wait... and wait...

Weeks later I got a small cardboard box.
I did not get the ship from the book.
I got two of these:

(btw That was just the quickest image grab I could find, to whomever painted it, it's beautiful)

I was beyond disappointed. I was utterly disgusted. And resolved not to ever do that again.
Fast forward to my early 40's, I found the cover of Black Guard (unfortunately torn off of the book) in a box left exposed to the weather in my parent's barn, and the whole situation came rushing back, but this time I'm older, wiser, a much better painter, have a debit card, and access to the internet. This time it would be different.

So I've combed the web (at least the North American sections of it), back and forth looking for a miniature of that ship.
I have laid eyes on painted examples of the Dart, the Lance Electra (which I would like one of, for that matter), the Sentry, the Star Raven, and the Betafortress.... which, come to think of it is every single other ship from that book!!
But Not The Talon!! I know they have to exist because there was a picture of one on the order form in the back of the book!

Please, please can someone point me to a miniature of this ship?

Thanks anyone to any moderators who allowed this to be posted and to anyone who patiently read this far.

"This modification consists of being allowed to adjust the critical strike roll by any number up to the Ambush skill rank (not bonus) of the attacker. This adjustment may be either up or down."

So, yeah, any number within that range. Generally nothing in the 43-57 range (to use your example) is going to be outright fatal but he might prefer stun vs additional hits or whatever. Also, if you are close to 66, adjusting up or down to hit it will usually be beneficial too (for the attacker!).

That said, I would try to avoid letting it slow down play too much. If he's doing the critical lookup already, it's not a big deal but if you're doing the critical lookup you might just let him say he wants stun if it can't be fatal and you can pick something appropriate.

This was how we interpreted it as well. That was the exact reason that we eliminated it from use in our games. It led to tailored damage far too often, particularly with the talents and such.

Here you get the Impressions of Dragonmeet and Interview with Dr.Nicholas Caldwell video from last saturday in London:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The questions are from the poll we have done last week in the forum. Most questions are about Shadow World, Nicholas as a private person, a few about Harp and RMU- therefor the publications in this channel- but I will link to other interested channels (Harp, Ask the team, RMU), too- next week I will probably export a podcast version and sent it to spotify/applepodcast into the Shadow World channel.

Quote from: luzbel on December 01, 2025, 04:26:51 AMA greater giant storm, level 30, have +83 attack. Maybe, there is a balancing reason behind, because he have +150 bolt skill. That I can buy.

But, If an ogre, level 4, have +88 attack and 156 hits, a greater hill giant, level 8, cant have +50 attack and 104 hits. A basic Class I undead have better attack.

OBs are primarily a function of level and archetype. Greater storm giants have a spell user archetype; their power is in spells and not physical might. They have twelve spell lists to level 30. Directed spells is certainly part of that but they have a lot more to work with. They typically also have ogres, sea trolls, and elementals to provide melee support.

Greater hill giants have a skill archetype. That's basically equivalent to the Laborer or Scholar professions. Combat is not an emphasis for them.

Ogres and many undead have the offensive archetype. So they are basically fighters. Combat is an emphasis for them.
