Suppose a PC is involved in a grapple and is grappled at 60% so with a penalty of -60.

Suppose the PC try to escape and obtains, in the contested percentage maneuver, 80% as final result.

What happens?

1. The PC is free.
2. The PC is not free but is grappled percentage is reduced to 12% so the penalty is -12.

[I will say 2 but maybe I'm wrong]

For a percentage maneuver a result of more than the target number not only means the maneuver succeded, but that completed quicker than "normal". The default rule is that the target number is the 100 for percentage maneuvers...but for Grapple it is explicity stated that the penalties are cumultative add together to form the total penalty. A partial result lowers the grapple by the acieved number.

It is not explicitly stated, but implicitly it follows from these rules that the target number for -60 grapple is in fact 60 since if you reduce the penalty by more than this there no grapple left. The correct result of your situation is thus the PC should will be free.

Suppose each character had +70 in bonus for the skills involved and they are of the same size. The grappler rolls 50 and ends with 120 in result. The PC thus has dice + 70 -20-60 so there is just a 30% chance for him to get free even when the enemy did an average roll. If PCs skill for feats of strength is lower the chance to break free get much worse. With a +30 in feats of strength bonus it will most likely take two or more rounds to get free even if the grappler has negible skill for the grapple contest.

QuoteA partial result lowers the grapple by the acieved number.

if so 1 is correct I agree.

Yeah. "The grapple is reduced by the Percentage Maneuver result." (Pg177) Don't overcomplicate this by thinking of it as a percentage of a percentage. If you got a 60 result on your attempt to break free, the grapple % is reduced by 60. If it was only 60 to begin with, it's now 0 and you are free. A 100 result would be enough to get you free of a 100% grapple.

Yes, I have found the same quote.

So it's 1.

1 it's the simpler option also.

In general I think RMU rules are very good. An huge improvement if compared to RMFRP.
