Arcane Power and Arcane Circle
« on: June 22, 2008, 03:13:33 AM »
For 30 DP, Arcane Power allows a character to learn a Sphere of magic from another profession.

For 25 DP, Arcane Circle allows a character who already has one level in a specialist Mage profession to learn a Circle from another specialist Mage profession.

If I select Arcane Power for the Mage sphere, am I allowed to choose which Circle it applies to, or am I forced to select Mage? Can I, for instance, have a Cleric purchase the Circle of Necromancy instead? Or a Ranger purchase Vivamancy?

Also... if I have purchased Arcane Power for the Mage sphere (under either interpretation of the rule), is that sufficient to qualify for Arcane Circle, or must I purchase Additional Profession, take a level in the appropriate profession, and then take Arcane Circle in order to learn spells while advancing in my original profession?

If you have no Mage Arcane Power talent you have to select the Arcane Power first. You can choose which specialization you want to use, so Necromany, Magery, Vivamancy, Thaumatury, Mysticism is up to you.
If you want to learn another Mage Circle after you have learned the Arcane Power, you can learn it with Arcane Circle, because you already have the insight to the Mage Sphere.

I wouldn't connect it to the profession, only to the Arcane Power talent.

Cheaper/easier to just use Arcane Power rather than swapping professions.

With Arcane Power, you can select a specific  Circle or Sphere.

With Arcane Circle, you must already have a profession that gives access to one of the Mage Circles.

For example, a Vivamancer can take Arcane Circle to get access to the Elementalist Circle. However, a Ranger cannot, even if he took Arcane Power to get access to the Mage Sphere or the Vivamancer Sphere, he still requires Arcane Power to get one of the circles.

Do you really mean, you need a profession? So, it is not enough to have Arcance Power: Necormany to get Arcane Circle: Magery? You need to be from one of the Mage professions.

Sorry, I was able to answer myself... CoM Page 45 "This talent may only be taken by someone who has at least one level in a specialist Mage profession...". This is very clear wording and leaves no question.

So, after years of playing, you think you know everything and then... there is always a new surprise.  :o

Struck me as a corner case, because I assume that taking the Arcane Power talent is something that occurs only infrequently-- and because I wasn't entirely certain that there would be any reason that a character with Arcane Power shouldn't be able to take Arcane Circle as easily as any Mage.

I already created a small house rule to allow that. I have no player who used it so far but I'm sure there will, because I don't allow Profession changes in my campaign.

Considering the costs already involved, an extra 5 DPs is a drop in the bucket.

In the case of the Mage Sphere, can a non-Mage character simply take Arcane Power more than once, selecting the Mage Sphere (and a different Circle) each time? Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier.
