I havent looked through the whole forum, but i couldn find anything on:
Spell shield
It says in the roole book tha it functions as a normal shield, but in one of the item descriptions it says that the item is two handed sword and automatically cast this spell
so ho does it work, does it work like a normal shield and you have to hold it or does it lieave your hand free and just floats around proteckting you or something,m?

I've always pictured it floating next to the character, directed by his will.

Spell description (at least in RMFRP spell law) specify that it creates an invisible shield of force in front of the caster, which works as a shield but does not occupy a hand.

SHIELD MASTERY
2. Shield ? Creates an
invisible force shield in
front of the caster; it subtracts
25 from melee and
missile attacks and functions
as a normal shield.

Ok, this seems from the RM Classic version of Spell Law, right?
RMFRP Spell Law says (also second level spell from Shield Mastery Spell list):
Creates an invisible force shield in front of the caster. This works as a normal shield (subtracting 25 from appropriate attacks, etc), except it does not occupy an hand. This spell cannot be combined with a real shield.
I think you can safely assume the same even if you use another version of RM. ;)
BTW, Welcome to the forums!

Very 'handy' for the one-armed paladin in the party. Pun to easy to resist but we did have one.

IMO it doesn't use a hand, it is supposed to be used by spell casters that usually use 2-H weapons like staff, and the spell gives you +25 DB against front attacks.
But I think really it could be used in 2 forms, in Arcane Companion we see a picture that character handle the invisible shield, with the advantage you can move it to cover attacks from front AND side.

As a general rule of thumb ... if it grants anything like +20 or +25 to DB I count that as a normal shield...
If the bonus is lower +10 or like dancing shield (from one of my new books) I count it as a floating disk not needing to take up the same "space" as a normal shield. So you could use it with a Two-handed weapon or two weapon combo...it would just get out of the way for the attack and then pop right back in place after the attack is over...

shield is like a force field around you that protects against normal sized missle weapons. Once you start getting into magic and larger sized projectile weapons, like boulders or large jav's etc, thats when the shield no longer works at full potential
