Title: A bolt is a bolt is a ....
Post by: Old Man on May 26, 2008, 06:23:45 PM

Hypothetical RM2 item question:

Magician A has an item that adds to his Fire Bolt spells.

Magician B inherits item from Magician A. B does not have Fire Bolt (or Fire Law) but has RMC V's Element's Master list. Would you consider the combination of Elemental Bolt -and- Planar Couple (to Fire) to be equivalent? Or does Magician B need a different item?

Regards,
Old Man

It depends on the item, on its description. If the item description specifically mentions the Fire Bolt spell and/or the Fire Law list, then no the Elemental Bolt/Planar Couple combo would not work.

If it only mentions firebolt in a general way, then yes, it should work.

In this case, with the PC, it was fairly specific:

" Armring: Provides an extra Impact B crit (separate roll) whenever
a crit is scored with an Elemental Bolt spell:
Fire    Ice     Light/Shock     Water   Plasma  Nether"

Since magician A hadn't planned to pass the item to arch-mage B (and RMC V wasn't in use by us at that time, or at least that list...). Hmmm... Guess it is up to the ole GM eh? :)

Though, if the description is as you give it, then I would personally allow it as it is specifying specific elements that it works with, not specific spells.

Also, I would say this has to do with how the GM set up the world's magic. If all fire effects are based from the same source, then if the item is augmenting at the source it won't matter which spell it is. If it is augmenting the spell which taps that source, then it wouldn't.
